Yankees Minor League Report 7/31/14: All Of These Guys are Still Here? Cashman Failed!

Scranton (Defeated Gwinnett, 8-4)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-5, 2 RBI, RS
Back over .300 at this level (.301).  Been a bit of a yo-yo lately between being over that line and under it.
UTIL Jose Pirela:  3-for-5, 2B (16), 3B (7), 2 RBI, RS
Played LF tonight, where he has played most of the season.  Has appearances at 1B, 2B, SS, LF, and RF.
C John Ryan Murphy:  2-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS
13-for-39 (.333) since ASB as he continues to pick up the pace.
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  1-for-5, RBI, K
C/1B Austin Romine: 1-for-4, 2B (15), K
3B Rob Segedin:  1-for-3, 2 RS, BB
One person all the moving and shaking does affect in the shorter term is Segedin, who isn't a big prospect, but is one step away from the major league roster.  That becomes much less likely with the deadline moves.
OF Taylor Dugas:  0-for-2, 2 RS, BB
He is most effective when he is drawing those walks and being a pest.

RHP Bruce Billings (W, 5-5):  6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
RHP Matt Daley:  1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Edgmer Escalona:  2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
---------------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Portland, 2-1.   Since Johnny Bench O'Brien is no longer on the team, the scoring is going to go down)

CF Jake Cave: 2-for-4, BB, K
Hitting .357 (20-for-56) at this level and .311/.367/.420 overall in 441 AB.  In case you forgot, this kid is only 21 years old and missed a full season of development in 2012.  Amazing stuff.
C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4, K
.275/.338/.421 in 349 AB
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-3, BB
Interestingly, the left-handed hitter is showing a reverse split in 2014 (.744 OPS vs. LHP; .668 vs. RHP)
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, 2B (14), RS, 2 K
.209/.278/.276 in 406 AB
Honestly, when I was hearing the Colorado rumors, I thought Williams may be on their radar - superb CF defense to cover their vast outfield, and still some offensive potential hidden in here somewhere.

RHP Jaron Long (W, 4-0):  6.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
105 IP, 88 H, 34 R, 26 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 95 K between Charleston/Tampa/Trenton
RHP Danny Burawa:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Still time for Burawa, but his disaster in Scranton leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.
RHP Mark Montgomery (S, 1):  1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
-----------------
Tampa (Lost to Charlotte, 7-3)

OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-3, 2B (5), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
3B Eric Jagielo:  2-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, 2 K
Both of these guys have done more than enough to start in Trenton in 2015, which will be exciting to see.
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-3, BB, K
.271/.372/.435 in 269 AB
Not to leave Bird out of it - he too will get his Double-A shot in 2015.
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-3, BB
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 3 K
As for these two clowns, neither will be protected in the Rule 5 - but neither will likely be drafted.  The Yankees still need depth in the system, so they will likely both be here next year.   But prospect status?  Dwindling very, very quickly.
UTIL Anderson Feliz:  1-for-4, RBI, K

LHP Miguel Sulbaran (L, 2-2):  7 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
2.85 ERA; 91.2 IP, 80 H, 34 R, 29 ER, 3 HR, 24 BB, 67 K
RHP Philip Walby:  1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
High-A debut.  4.66 ERA in 30 games for Charleston with 51/32 K/BB ratio over 36.2 innings.
------------------
Charleston (Lost to Hagerstown, 1-0)

SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-4, 2B (17), 2 K
.280/.356/.344 in 393 AB in what has to be considered a successful campaign
SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-4, 2 K
.261/.318/.338 in 142 AB.   2-for-23 since coming back.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-2, BB, K
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-3
OF Michael O'Neill:  0-for-3, K
OF Brandon Thomas:  0-for-3, 2 K
OF Mark Payton:  0-for-4, 2 K
Rare no-hit night since signing.  Hitting .342.

LHP Chaz Hebert (L, 1-3):  7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
58.2 IP, 39 H, 19 R, 13 ER, 1 HR, 20 BB, 45 K between Charleston/Tampa
---------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Lowell, 11-4)

2B/3B Ty McFarland:  1-for-3, RBI, BB
I said the other day that only Torrens and Breen were worth much here; I think McFarland may just have a fighter's chance as well.
C Luis Torrens:  1-for-5, RBI
CF Devyn Bolasky:  0-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K
1B/OF Chris Breen:  1-for-3, RS, BB
SS Vincent Conde:  0-for-3, RS, BB, K
I don't have too much overall confidence in Conde, but if he can stick at SS, that definitely is a point in his favor.
OF Austin Aune:  0-for-3, 2 K
Officially on the Estee Harris Watch for 2014.   59 K in 37 games.
1B Connor Spencer:  1-for-4, 3 K
Supposedly has great bat control, but not much power

RHP Sean Carley (L, 0-2):  2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Getting crushed lately (11 runs in last three innings pitched)
RHP Dillon McNamara:  3.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
3.38 ERA; 29.1 IP, 28 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 18 K
27th round pick out of Adelphia in 2013.

Yankees Make Several Moves At the Trading Deadline

As someone who blogs mostly about the Yankees minor league system, the trade deadline is typically an exciting time - which of their bigger name prospects are on the table, and which players are they looking to get in return?  In most years, the answer is simply a bunch of rumors without any action.  This year is a tad different, as there was a lot of action, but nothing that fits the definition of a truly major trade.

Instead of going through them all one by one, let us look at the totality of all of the trades:

Yankees receive RHP Brandon McCarthy, 3B Chase Headley, IF Stephen Drew, and UTIL Martin Prado in exchange for LHP Vidal Nuno, RHP Rafael DePaula, IF Yangveris Solarte, IF Kelly Johnson, C/1B/Wherever Pete O'Brien, and a player to be named later.    That is a lot of names - most of which fall into a bit of a generic category.  Sure, most of them are useful - but none are franchise-turning moves.

To be exact, the Yankees made moves to upgrade slightly in 2014, while giving themselves options for 2015:

McCarthy has pitched very well since coming over from Arizona, and could pitch himself into a 2015 contract if he keeps it up.   As a back-of-the-rotation starter, he would probably be just fine and give the Yankees one less thing to worry about.

Headley was defined as a "pure rental" by Brian Cashman, but it is hard to believe him completely on that.  He is an above average defensive third baseman with one big career year on his resume offensively.    If he proves he can be at least average offensively the rest of the season, the Yankees can probably resign him at a reasonable market rate.

Drew is the biggest wild-card of the entire bunch.    Unless you are living under a rock, you know there is a big hole at the shortstop position starting in 2015, with no immediate help in the minor leagues to fill it.  This is essentially a two-month audition for Drew to prove to the Yankees he can be that guy.  The early returns on his season were not encouraging, but he has hit much better in his last 19 games (.215/.329/.477 in 76 plate appearances) than he did in his first 19 games.   That is essentially what Drew is when he is healthy:  Not much average, some plate discipline, and above average power for a middle infielder.

Prado is the only player they acquired who will definitely be on the squad in 2015 if the Yankees don't trade him (unlikely, given his contract).   He can play many different positions, but is more than just a utility player, as he has played every day in the past several seasons.  He has been going through a down year in 2014 (.686 OPS; 91 OPS+) but has generally been an above average defensive player and an average offensive one, providing a decent batting average and decent pop, but not much in the OBP or speed department.

As for what the Yankees gave up from their system, the "sexiest" name may be Pete O'Brien, due to that enormous home run total (33) in the minor leagues this season.  However, he is a man without much of a position, and there are questions about whether he can make enough consistent contact to be useful offensively.  His power is real - he can hit major league mistakes a mile.  But that is the only above average part to his game, as he many not have a position to play, doesn't profile as a high-average or high OBP guy, etc.   Essentially, the Diamondbacks were looking to dump a salary and took back a decent prospect with probably a 30% chance of becoming a big league player, and a 5% or so chance of being a legitimate one.

However, the player with the biggest chance to become something truly useful is Rafael DePaula, due to a big fastball that the Padres can try out in the bullpen if and when the time comes.   For the Yankees, this represents a small risk, because they have plenty of depth in the reliever department from the majors all the way down the minor league system.  DePaula has struggled to get out of High-A ball as a starter and already is a bit advanced in age, so the Yankees lost very little sleep allowing him to go.

The future?  None of these moves are truly blocking any of the Yankees minor league players.  Their best shortstop prospects are teenagers who are several seasons away.  Their best third base prospects (especially Eric Jagielo) are likely looking at 2016 if they develop.   With Kuroda likely retiring and the unknown futures of Tanaka, Sabathia, and Pienda (to a lesser extent, Nova), McCarthy wouldn't be blocking a soul - if he pitches well, the Yankees will likely bring him back because they need the depth.   The best player Prado may block is someone like Jose Pirela, who has hit very well in Scranton in 2014, but has never been a truly big prospect.   On top of that, Prado offers more defense and likely more major league offense.

Overall Grade for the Yankees Front Office?  I would say a solid B - not because of what they acquired, but because of what they gave up to acquire it.  They made some marginal-to-decent upgrades in several spots without mortgaging anything that was in their future plan, either near-term nor long-term.      So, for those who are "prospect huggers", you should be happy:  Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Ian Clarkin, etc. are all still here.   In some ways, the Yankees got a bit lucky if the goal was to not make a big splash.  No pressure to acquire the biggest names on the market (Lester, Price), because they were unlikely to be moved within the division.

Goody now has 35 strikeouts in 19.2 IP this season.
RHP Nick Rumbelow (S, 1)1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

.249/.336/.473 in 205 AB
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K

3.02 ERA; 95.1 IP, 71 H, 38 R, 32 ER, 4 HR, 38 BB, 95 K
There have been bumps in his road, but can't complain much about his season overall.
---------------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Asheville, 10-8)

SS Abiatal Avelino:  1-for-5, RS, K
2B/SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-5, RS, K
3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-5, RS, 3 K
It does suck sometimes when I see a minor league affiliate have a big offensive night - only to see that the most promising players on the team didn't play a huge role in getting there.
OF Michael O'Neill:  2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 RS
.255/.326/.407 in 376 AB with 43 RBI.  If only he was a teenager like the three mentioned above, this would be much more encouraging.
1B Reymond Nunez:  1-for-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
CF Mark Payton:  2-for-4, RBI, BB
No doubt about it - doing an outstanding job here.   But his small stature and limited upside makes him a #4 or #5 OF prospect at best.
C Kale Sumner:  2-for-4, RS
.256/.430/.407 in 86 AB.  Has 25 walks.
OF Brandon Thomas:  2-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, K
15-for-37 stretch has raised his average to..... only .186.
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
Since I featured the other eight men in the lineup, I couldn't leave him out!

RHP Andy Beresford:  5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
4.26 ERA; 25.1 IP, 29 H, 15 R, 12 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 12 K
In his brief (75 IP) minor league career, the GB (2.76 GO/AO ratio this year entering tonight's game) has been his calling card.
RHP Giovanny Gallegos:  2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Some talk last year of him being a sleeper.  A 4.27 ERA last year and a 5.43 ERA this year put to sleep a lot of that chatter.
RHP Eric Ruth:  1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
LHP Evan Rutckyj (L, 3-1):  0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
Nice strikeout rate (45 in 32.2 IP) is his only redeeming quality this year.  Has been a disappointment.
----------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to UConn, 65-61.   Oops...sorry.  Lost to Connecticut, 4-1)

C Luis Torrens:  0-for-3, BB
33-for-95
SS Jose Javier:  1-for-4, RBI
1B/OF Chris Breen:  1-for-4, 2 K
.250/.350/.424 in 132 AB.  20 years old.
RF Austin Aune:  0-for-4, 3 K
.225/.286/.359 with a mind-blowing 57 strikeouts in 142 AB
1B Connor Spencer:  0-for-4, 2 K
1B Bubba Jones:  2-for-3, BB, K
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-3, 3 K
Other than Torrens and Breen (to an extent), there hasn't been much to get excited about here...especially with Thairo Estrada on the DL

RHP David Palladino (L, 4-3):  4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
4.10 ERA; 41.2 IP, 40 H, 25 R, 19 ER, 2 HR, 19 BB, 44 K
LHP Jordan Montgomery:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Has thrown four scoreless innings in two appearances since joining level.  Don't sleep on Montgomery, who has legitimate major league potential as a starter.
RHP Joe Harvey:  2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Yankees Minor League Report 7/28/14: Gary Sanchez Goes Yard; Aaron Judge Draws Four Walks

Scranton (Defeated Pawtucket, 6-4)

2B/RF Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-4, 2B (10), 2 RS
24-for-96 in July (.250) with 11 walks
C John Ryan Murphy:  1-for-4, RBI
12-for-36 (.333) in last ten games
2B Jose Pirela:  3-for-4, 2 RS
7-for-37 slide entering this game.
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-4, 4 K
According to my advanced minor league metrics, this does not qualify as a good night at the plate.
C/1B Austin Romine:  2-for-4, 2B (13), 2 RBI
.249/.308/.371 in 229 AB
1B Kyle Roller:  2-for-3, 2B (14), RBI, RS, BB, K
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, K
.313/.347/.473 in 294 AB
OF Taylor Dugas:  0-for-4, K

RHP Chris Leroux (W, 3-2): 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
RHP Joel De La Cruz:  2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
4.32 ERA; 93.2 IP, 103 H, 57 R, 45 ER, 7 HR, 27 BB, 50 K, 2.33 GO/AO
RHP Matt Daley (S, 9):  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.31 ERA; 32.2 IP, 36 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 5 HR, 7 BB, 47 K
----------------------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated New Britain, 6-1)

C Gary Sanchez:  2-for-5, 2B (18), HR (11), 2 RBI, RS
He has been hitting very well in July, without much power.  That changed a bit tonight.
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB
Eight walks in 11 games since joining level; 14-for-42
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-5, 2B (27), RBI, 2 RS
.284/.324/.374 in 433 AB.
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  1-for-2, BB, K, HBP
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
SS Ali Castillo: 3-for-4, SB (11), CS (4)

RHP Zach Nuding (W, 7-2):  6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
2.71 ERA; 83 IP, 70 H, 26 R, 25 ER, 21 BB, 67 K
His disaster in Scranton still hangs over his head (6.25 ERA in eight starts)
RHP Mark Montgomery:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
On the surface, he has a nice ERA, a good K rate (41 in 38 IP), etc.   But reports are that he is now reliant a lot on his slider thanks to a fading fastball.
LHP James Pazos:   1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
He kind of flies under the radar, but he has legitimate major league stuff.  I would move him to Scranton to pair with Ty Webb, while moving Lindgren here.
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.21 ERA; 40.2 IP, 28 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 0 HR, 13 BB, 58 K between Charleston/Tampa/Trenton
---------------------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Charlotte, 3-1)

OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-1, 4 BB
.289/.414/.438 since joining level with 27 walks in 36 games
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K
.278/.375/.440
3B Eric Jagielo:  1-for-2, BB, HBP
.249/.335/.463 in 201 AB.  As I have said before, the Yankees would be ecstatic if this was the type of slash he put up in the big leagues - but we are a long ways away from that.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-3, 3B (2), RS, BB, 2 K
Giving up a hit to Culver is bad enough - a triple?
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-4
.280/.361/.422 in 379 AB
2B Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-4
UTIL Claudio Custodio:  1-for-3, BB, 2 SB (21), CS (2)
A high steal rate is his only real claim to fame, offensively.  Hey, it got Justin Christian to the majors.

RHP Jhon Morban (L, 0-1):  4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Tampa debut, though I assume this was some sort of emergency move.    Was 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in 23 innings in the GCL this year with a 16/14 K/BB ratio.
----------------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Asheville, 6-5)

CF Mark Payton:  2-for-4, HR (2), 3 RBI, RS
This little display of power is surprising.  He is 5'7" and reportedly has very little power.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-1, RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
.232/.333/.352 in 298 AB.  .298/.383/.412 in 114 AB since ASB
3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-4, K
SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-4
.279/.356/.341 in 384 AB
OF Michael O'Neill: 0-for-4, 2 K

4.69 ERA; 96 IP, 103 H, 54 R, 50 ER, 4 HR, 35 BB, 75 K
Threw 52 innings in 2013.
----------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Connecticut, 5-4)

1B Connor Spencer:  3-for-4, RBI, RS
.337/.372/.395 in 86 AB
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  0-for-4, RS, BB, K
.298/.354/.464 in 151 AB
SS Vincent Conde:  0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (4)
12-for-54
CF Devyn Bolasky:  1-for-5
.269/.292/.333 in 108 AB
OF Austin Aune:  1-for-3, BB, 2 K

Yankees Minor League Report 7/27/14: Highlights from Yesterday's Action

Just some general highlights from yesterday:

RHP Brian Mitchell tossed a gem for Scranton (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K)  This comes on the heals of tossing five scoreless innings in his previous start.    Mitchell is one of those "big stuff, mixed results" type of prospects.   If the results start to match the stuff, the Yankees would have something nice on their hands.....Robert Refsnyder got Sunday off.

In Trenton, Jake Cave followed his monster night on Saturday with a big day on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with a triple, his first Trenton HR, and three runs batted in.   On Saturday, he went 4-for-5 with a double and two triples....Organizational utilityman Casey Stevenson added a 2-run home run as well, while Mason Williams had a pair of singles and a run scored....LHP Manny Banuelos tossed four hitless innings, allowing an unearned run while walking one and striking out two.   He threw 70 pitches in this outing, so he is officially being stretched out...

In Tampa, Dante Bichette added two more doubles (giving him 27 on the season).   He also drove home two, giving him 62 on the season.  He has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the entire system - let us see what he does in Trenton before getting too excited, though....Aaron Judge and Eric Jagielo each singled, scored, and walked.....RHP Jose Pena made his Tampa debut, throwing two perfect innings while striking out one.  The 23-year old has been around since 2009, mostly in the DSL....Jacob Lindgren tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, walking one while striking out four.   He now has 23 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.

In Charleston, Miguel Andujar continued his rampage, going 2-for-4 with a double, run batted in, and two runs scored.   He is at .331/.396/.500 in 34 games since the ASB...LHP Ian Clarkin lasted 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.  He has now thrown 65 innings on the season....

Yankees Minor League Report 7/26/14: Jake Cave Has Huge Night in Trenton; Tyler Wade Collects 4 Hits; Pete O'Brien Hits #31; Miguel Andujar Homers

Scranton (Lost to Pawtucket, 8-5)

C John Ryan Murphy:  2-for-4, 2 RBI, K
11-for-35 in last ten games.  Seems to be past his slump now.
2B/RF Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
10-for-44 since ASB with four walks and 12 strikeouts
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, RS, BB, K
6-for-38 since ASB
OF Zoilo Almonte:  0-for-4, BB, 3 K
C/1B Austin Romine:  1-for-4, BB
19-for-55 in July
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-4, 2 K
5-for-23 since joining level.
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  2-for-3, 2B (16), 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB
He is older (29), and is mostly an OF who has played some third base recently.  I don't think the Yankees see much here, but he does have more defensive value than Ronnier Mustelier did.    By the way, for those wondering (and potential those who cursed out the Yankees for not giving Mustelier a chance), he is currently playing in the Mexican League.
SS Carmen Angelini:  2-for-4, RS, K

RHP Bruce Billings wasn't any good.  The end.
LHP Jeremy Bleich (L, 0-4):  2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
8.37 ERA; 23.2 IP, 29 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 2 HR, 13 BB, 20 K
There was potential here (as a reliever, at the very least) before his dreaded shoulder injury.
RHP Edgmer Escalona:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
If there is 40-man room in September, this guy will probably get called up.  Not because he is special in any way, shape, or form - just the type of disposal arm you sometimes see in September.
--------------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Binghamton, 10-7)

CF Jake Cave:  4-for-5, 2B (4), 2 3B (2), 3 RS, BB
Just like that, his .200 average since joining the level jumps to .286.
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  4-for-4, 2 RBI, BB
18-for-40 since the ASB
C Gary Sanchez:  3-for-6, RBI, RS
The power has pretty much disappeared during his 11-game hitting streak, but not much to complain about at this point.
C/1B Pete O'Brien: 2-for-5, HR (21), 2 RBI, RS, K
31st home run of the season.
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
.282 in 425 AB with 41 RBI and 52 runs scored.
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, BB

RHP Jaron Long:  5 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR
Hasn't had many clunkers this season - this certainly qualifies.
LHP James Pazos:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
2.74 ERA; 49.1 IP, 40 H, 17 R, 15 ER, 0 HR, 18 BB, 58 K between Tampa/Trenton
RHP Diego Moreno:  1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
--------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Ft. Myers, 8-6 in 11 innings)

3B Eric Jagielo:  2-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, K
.245/.321/.464 in 196 AB
Pulled early - but not because he was dealt for Edwin Jackson.  He was ejected after striking out.  Hitting coach P.J. Pilittere, who played in the system for a while, was also ejected.
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-2, RS, 3 BB, SB (1)
Has equaled his stolen base total from last season.    Nice to see the three walks, which gives him 41 in 70 games.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-3, 2B (25), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Impossible for anyone to be disappointed with Bichette this season.  .280/.363/.420 in 371 AB with 60 runs batted in.
OF Aaron Judge:  2-for-6, RS
.293/.401/.447 here; .319/.419/.501 overall
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-5, 2 K
.210/.279/.272
As much as Bichette's revival (though we shouldn't get TOO carried away there) is fun to watch, the Yankees would have been better off if Culver was the one showing signs of life instead.

LHP Miguel Sulbaran:  5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HR
He hasn't put together a start this bad in a long time.  Had a 1.15 ERA in 31.1 June innings; had a 0.78 ERA in 23 IP in July before tonight.
LHP Ramon Benjamin (L, 0-2):  2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
4.12 ERA in 19.2 IP with 21/10 K/BB ratio.
------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Asheville, 8-7, in 13 innings)

3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-6, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, K
Back-to-back games with HR; has 13 RBI in last ten games
2B/SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-4, RS, BB, HBP
2B Gosuke Katoh:  2-for-4, 2 2B (15), RBI, 2 RS, BB, CS (8)
15-for-23 stealing bases.   He was hitting .190 at the ASB with 75 Ks in 57 games.  He is 33-for-109 since the ASB with 33 Ks in 33 games.
OF Mark Payton:  2-for-7, 2 RBI
.355/.459/.500 in 62 AB since signing
SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-6, 2 K
.271/.333/.353 in 133 AB.   1-for-14 since coming off of his rehab stint.
OF Michael O'Neill:  3-for-6, 2B (20), RS, 2 K, 2 SB (31)
OF Brandon Thomas:  1-for-6, 2B (7), 3 K
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-1, RBI
Pinch-hit for Avelino

RHP Gabriel Encinas: 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
9.90 ERA in ten innings.  This is essentially a rehab year for him.
RHP Luis Niebla:  5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Eric Ruth: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
3.73 ERA in 72.1 IP with 71/24 K/BB ratio pitching in all four full-season levels.
RHP Giovanny Gallegos (W, 4-4):  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
5.18 ERA; 64.1 IP, 78 H, 46 R, 37 ER, 5 HR, 16 BB, 66 K
--------------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Tri-City, 16-3.    Seems like they are giving up some runs lately...)

C Luis Torrens:  1-for-4, K
Streak hits 21.
OF Nathan Mikolas:  3-for-4, 2B (3), HR (2), 2 RBI, RS, K
If he would have a nice game like this more than once every five months or so, the Yankees would be onto something.    Hitting .228.
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  0-for-4, 2 K
Hitting .306.  You will hear people (including myself) talking about how college hitters SHOULD dominate here and that McFarland is doing nothing special.  I do agree with that - but remember, some college bats show their true colors right away and flame right out of baseball.
C Isaias Tejada:  1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS, K
Having a nice season (.352 in 88 AB), but he hasn't been good in a while.
RF Austin Aune:  1-for-4, 2 K
1B/OF Chris Breen:  0-for-4, 2 K
SS Vincent Conde:  0-for-5, K
.234/.302/.255 in 47 AB since signing
1B Connor Spencer:  1-for-4, RS

RHP Jordan Cote (L, 1-3):  2 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR
Has an 8.40 ERA in 30 innings
RHP Matt Borens:  2.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, HR

Yankees Minor League Report 7/25/14: Greg Bird With Walk-Off Hit; Miguel Andujar Homers; Tyler Wade is Jealous of Ichiro

Scranton (Pummeled by Pawtucket, 10-2)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-3, RS, BB, K
Hitting .299 in 154 AB at this level with 26 walks and 36 strikeouts.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, RBI
3B Rob Segedin:  1-for-4
5-for-19 since joining level; .274/.382/.413 in 303 AB overall
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-3, 2B (13), RBI, BB
.299/.391/.546 in 324 AB between Trenton/Scranton
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  2-for-4, 2B (15)
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-5, RS, 2 K
Played 1B tonight.   8-for-41 in last ten games
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-4, K
C John Ryan Murphy:  0-for-4

LHP Matt Tracy (L, 1-3):  3.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
114.2 IP, 130 H, 51 R, 43 ER, 7 HR, 45 BB, 67 K
RHP Danny Burawa:  1.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
6.35 ERA; 39.2 IP, 46 H, 28 R, 28 ER, 3 HR, 26 BB, 49 K
This is just awful
LHP Rich Hill:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Can we just imagine that this was Burawa's day and Burawa's day was actually Hill's day?
RHP Joel De La Cruz:  1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
4.24 ERA; 63.2 IP, 71 H, 40 R, 30 ER, 5 HR, 18 BB, 35 K
Started a suspended game on 6/23 and only pitched two innings.   Just getting his work in.
LHP Ty Webb:  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Now has 9/2 K/BB ratio over 4.2 IP since joining this level and a 77/17 ratio over 53.1 IP overall.
------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Binghamton, 6-1)

C Gary Sanchez:  2-for-4, K
10-game hitting streak (13-for-41)
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-4, RS, K
6-for-30
1B/3B/RF Tyler Austin:  1-for-4, K
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-3, RBI, BB, K
66th RBI of the season
OF Ben Gamel:  0-for-4

LHP Dan Camarena (L, 0-4): 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR
By far his best performance since joining this level.  He has thrown 106.1 innings this year, but no biggie - he tossed 112.1 last year.
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
39.2 IP, 28 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 0 HR, 13 BB, 56 K between Charleston/Tampa/Trenton
RHP Nick Goody:  0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
First appearance since 6/28.  A healthy Goody is in the 2015 bullpen discussion.
RHP Jairo Heredia:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
--------------------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Ft. Myers in a thriller, 4-3.  Up 1-0 entering the top of the 8th, Tampa gave up the tying run before allowing the two go-ahead runs in the top of the 9th.  Tampa came back with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to win it)

1B Greg Bird:  2-for-5, 2 RBI
And here is your hero - two-out, two-run single to win it.
Now on a 9-game hitting streak (14-for-32) with 11 RBI during the streak
RF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, RBI, K
63rd RBI in 98 games.  13-for-38 in last ten contests.
3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-4
.240/.318/.464
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-3, BB, 3 K
.280/.363/.418 with 47 walks and 85 Ks in 100 games.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, RS, K
UTIL Jose Rosario:  1-for-3, RS, BB
OF Danny Oh:  3-for-5, RS, K

RHP Brett Gerritse:  6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 4 K
3.51 ERA; 66.2 IP, 70 H, 35 R, 26 ER, 5 HR, 22 BB, 36 K for Tampa.
RHP Cesar Vargas (W, 2-0):  1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Now that is what you call a lucky win.
--------------------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Lexington, 6-1)

Still no word on Dustin Fowler, who grounded into a DP a few nights ago and was taken out of the game.

3B Miguel Andujar:  2-for-4, HR (8), 3 RBI, RS, K
Always love to see players this young adjust to a league as a season goes on.  Now 38-for-114 since the ASB.
2B/SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-5, 2B (16), 2 RS
All the way up to .282.  Has 19 hits in last 43 AB.
Of course, with Ichiro hitting a HR tonight for the Yankees, all eyes are now on Wade - who has yet to hit a HR in his career in 547 AB.
CF Mark Payton:  3-for-5, 2B (4), RBI, RS, K
20-for-55 (.364) since signing.
SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-4, BB, K
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-4, K
WIth Avelino back, they are back to their rotation from earlier in the season, where Wade plays 2B and SS, while Avelino plays exclusively SS and Katoh plays exclusively 2B.  Whoever isn't playing of the three ends up in the DH role.  Got it?
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-3, RS, BB, SB (29)
OF Brandon Thomas:  1-for-3, RS, BB, K

LHP Chaz Hebert (W, 1-2):  5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Rebound off of a 6-run, 1 IP performance last time out.
--------------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Tri-City, 9-7)

2B/3B Ty McFarland:  2-for-5, HR (3), 4 RBI, RS
I would say to move this kid up to Charleston, but the infield is pretty much set there.  Doesn't really kill him to end his season here, but you want to see college players move when they show they are handling a level.
C Luis Torrens:  2-for-5, 2 RS
Hitting streak has reached 20 (32-for-81)
RF Austin Aune:  2-for-4, 2B (12), 3B (2), RS, 2 K
He will, on occasion, show off some pop.   But he has been such a mess (50/9 K/BB ratio this year in 33 games) that it is impossible to trust him.
1B/OF Chris Breen:  1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
1B Connor Spencer:  1-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, BB
8th round pick is hitting .297 in 74 AB
CF Devyn Bolasky:  1-for-4, 2 RS, BB
.286/.311/.357 in 98 AB
SS Vincent Conde:  0-for-5, K
11-for-42.

RHP Dillon McNamara:  4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Sean Carley:  0.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Had given up two runs in seven innings at this level prior to this massacre.
RHP Conor Mullee:  2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Has a 24/6 K/BB ratio over 18.1 IP.  The age is scary (26), but injuries have really held him back.

Yankees Minor League Report 7/24/14: Zoilo Almonte Goes Deep Three Times; Robert Refsnyder, Tyler Austin, and Greg Bird Also Homer; Latest from Luis Severino; Abiatal Avelino Back with Charleston, Though Tyler Wade Steals the Show

Scranton (Swept DH from Gwinnett, 12-4 and 4-1)

OF Zoilo Almonte:  4-for-6, 3 HR (16), 7 RBI, 3 RS, 2 K
The beauty of this is that it all came in one game, as he did not play in Game 2.  Let us hope the reasoning for that is that he is on his way to New York.  Hitting .287/.330/.507 in 296 AB
2B/RF Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-8, 2B (9), HR (7), RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB, 2 K
.298/.401/.510 in 151 AB for Scranton
C John Ryan Murphy:  2-for-4, RBI, K
An 8-for-20 stretch since the ASB has raised his average to .241
C/1B Austin Romine:  3-for-5, RS
.249/.308/.373 in 217 AB.  18-for-51 (.353) in July
UTIL Jose Pirela:  0-for-2, 2 BB
.308/.352/.433 in 390 AB   Only 4-for-29 since ASB
3B Rob Segedin:  2-for-8, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS, BB
.274/.383/.415 in 299 AB between Trenton/Scranton
OF Taylor Dugas:  3-for-7, 2 RBI, RS, SF, BB
.313/.376/.386 in 83 AB since promotion; .300/.395/.412 overall
1B Kyle Roller:  2-for-7, RS, 2 BB, 4 K
.272/.369/.461 in 243 AB for Scranton
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  1-for-5
.304/.337/.461 in 280 AB.  Played CF in Game 1.
SS Carmen Angelini:  3-for-7, 2 RBI, 2 RS, SAC, K
When Ryan was hit by a pitch today, it quickly flashed into my brain that the next guy on the depth chart is likely Angelini.  A solid, though not spectacular, fielder.  Simply won't hit nearly enough to do much of anything in the big leagues
IF Corban Joseph: 3-for-7, 2 2B (8), 2 RS, 2 BB, K
.253/.313/.357 in 182 AB

RHP Joel De La Cruz:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
4.20 ERA; 90 IP, 98 H, 54 R, 42 ER, 6 HR, 27 BB, 46 K, 2.29 GO/AO
Start cut short due to the Wednesday rainout
LHP Nik Turley (W, 1-2):  4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
6.23 ERA; 26 IP, 26 H, 19 R, 18 ER, 6 HR, 20 BB, 23 K
Essentially in spring training mode.  The key is staying healthy the rest of the year, and hope that he is still here next year - the Yankees can use the depth.
RHP Matt Daley (S, 8):  3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR

Switch Pat Venditte:  4 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Desperation start for Scranton.  Now has a 3.50 ERA at this level in 36 IP with 37/11 K/BB ratio.
RHP Edgmer Escalona (S, 1):  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Binghamton, 6-5)

C Gary Sanchez:  2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 K
Hitting streak is up to nine, though he only has one XBH in those games.
1B/3B/RF Tyler Austin:  1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, RS, 2 K
Second consecutive game with HR.  13-for-32 since ASB with six XBH.
OF Jake Cave:  1-for-3, 2B (3), RS, BB, K
5-for-26 with five walks since joining level.  Played LF tonight.
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, RS
It is the minor leagues and all that, but Williams' value is that of a CF.  As much as I like Cave, I think Williams still should get the bulk of CF playing time.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS
10-game hitting streak (11-for-38)
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, 3 K
Has reached 100 Ks (96 games).  Has walked 17 times, though of course he does have those 54 XBH.

RHP Luis Severino:  4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
Now has 111 Ks in 97.1 IP between Charleston (14 starts), Tampa (4 starts) and Trenton (2 starts).
RHP Mark Montgomery:  1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
LHP Francisco Rondon (W, 1-1):  2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
---------------------------------------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Ft. Myers, 6-1)

1B Greg Bird:  2-for-3, HR (7), 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
.281/.372/.450.  He is 12-for-38 with three home runs and eight walks in his last ten games, and has a very Bird-like .323/.403/.512 triple slash in his last 34 games.
3B Eric Jagielo:  1-for-3, 2B (10), K, HBP
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-4, K
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 3 K
.225/.272/.328 in 262 AB with a whopping 74 strikeouts.  The clock is nearing midnight.
SS Cito Culver:  2-for-4, 2 RS
.213/.282/.276 in 381 AB
Let us state the obvious:  This kid is not likely to ever hit.  It is his defense plus the fact that the Yankees have nothing blocking him in Double-A/Triple-A that will keep him around.  I doubt they protect him, and I doubt he gets drafted.
UTIL Jose Rosario:  3-for-4, RBI, RS
20-for-41 during a 10-game hitting streak.  Enjoy it while it lasts. He is a 22-year old who hasn't hit a lick since a spurt in the GCL back in 2011.
UTIL Anderson Feliz:  2-for-4, 3B (1), 2 RBI

LHP Caleb Smith (W, 2-0):  6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
12 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K in two starts since promotion
LHP Ramon Benjamin:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
3.57 ERA; 17.2 IP, 16 H, 9 R, 7 ER, HR, 9 BB, 19 K
------------------------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Lexington, 10-3)

SS Tyler Wade:  4-for-5, 2B (15), 2 RBI, 3 RS
Average is up to .281 in 367 AB.   He is 27-for-77 in July.   He has been very solid and has earned himself a ticket to Tampa in 2015.  He'll be 20 years old.
SS Abiatal Avelino:  1-for-4, RS, BB
First game here since 5/10.   There is hardly anything that is good about losing a potential top prospect for an extended period of time, but it did allow Wade to play a lot of shortstop in the past two months.  They will probably now alternate the two, and Wade may get some time at second (which he received earlier in the year) to give Katoh a break.  They'll work it out.
3B Miguel Andujar:  2-for-5, 3 RBI, RS
He looked horrible during May (.522 OPS in 27 games), but was decent in April and June and has been tearing it up in July.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-4, 3 K
He too has progressed as the season has gone along, but there is a lot for him to work on (now has 107 K in 88 games, for example).
OF Mark Payton:  1-for-4, 2 RS, BB, K
17-for-50 since signing
OF Michael O'Neill:  0-for-5, 3 K
104 K in 94 games.  He has shown off a little bit of pop and some speed, but for a college hitter, we need to see more here.
C Eduardo de Oleo:  1-for-4, HR (12), 2 RBI, RS
Had five career HR entering the season.  21 years old.
OF Brandon Thomas:  1-for-3, 2 RS, BB, 2 K, SB (12)
Has found a bit of a stroke lately, but there likely is no salvaging this season.

RHP Andy Beresford:  4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
4.87 ERA; 20.1 IP, 22 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
RHP Angel Rincon (W, 3-2):  3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
3.89 ERA; 41.2 IP, 31 H, 20 R, 18 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 36 K
RHP Philip Walby:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
4.67 ERA; 34.2 IP, 24 H, 24 R, 18 ER, 0 HR, 32 BB, 49 K
------------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Manhandled by Tri-City, 14-0)

2B/3B Ty McFarland:  1-for-3, BB, K
C Luis Torrens:  1-for-4, K
Barely able to keep his 19-game hitting streak going.
OF Austin Aune:  0-for-4, 4 K
48 K in 32 games
C/CF Collin Slaybaugh:  1-for-4, 2B (3)
1B Bubba Jones:  0-for-3, BB, K
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-3, BB, K

LHP Jordan Montgomery:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Staten Island debut.  Pitched to a 4.76 ERA in 5.2 innings for the GCL squad in a tune-up.   He is a legitimate prospect drafted in the 4th round out of South Carolina, where he was their Friday Night starter.
RHP Joe Harvey:  1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
And here is where it started to become unglued.
LHP Rony Bautista:  2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Well, give him credit for one thing:  He forced them to actually hit the shit out of his pitches.  Typically, he simply has no idea where the ball is going.
LHP Ethan Carnes:  2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  2-for-4, 2B (14), HR (5), 4 RBI, RS
.265/.322/.387 in 302 AB
Austin has been hitting very well lately.  He is 12-for-28 (.429) since the ASB and 15-for-36 (.417) in his last ten games with four doubles and nine runs batted in.    Start of a bounce back or just a random tease?
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  3-for-3, 2 2B (12), RBI, 2 RS, BB
.245/.291/.542 in 249 AB for Trenton.   In July, he is 20-for-62 (.323) with five doubles, a triple, five home runs, and nine runs batted in.  He has also struck out 16 times in those 62 AB.
C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4, RS, 2 K
.267/.334/.415 in 318 AB
8-game hitting streak, though the last seven of those games are 1-hit affairs.

.207/.279/.276 in 377 AB
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-5, 2 K
.285/.327/.375 in 411 AB
24-for-74 in July (.324)
C Francisco Arcia:  1-for-3, 2B (3), BB, K

RHP Zach Nuding (W, 6-2):  8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR  (You don't see many 8-inning performances in the minors nowadays!)
3.99 ERA; 117.1 IP, 121 H, 56 R, 52 ER, 13 HR, 30 BB, 88 K for Trenton/Scranton.  Has been much more successful here than in Scranton
RHP Phil Wetherell:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Had a 0.39 ERA in 23.1 IP for Tampa.  Has a 4.50 ERA in 22 IP for Trenton.

54 K in 50 games.  Also has 20 XBH
2B Angelo Gumbs:  3-for-4, 2B (12), RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
I have pretty much given up on Gumbs - but more games like this would change anyone's mind, right?
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-4, BB, 2 K
UTIL Jose Rosario:  4-for-5, RBI, 2 RS
C Trent Garrison:  2-for-4, 2B (7), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Neither Rosario nor Garrison are considered prospects, but they (along with Gumbs) were the main cogs in tonight's offense.

RHP Brady Lail (W, 1-0):  6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
All five runs given up in the first.
108 IP, 118 H, 55 R, 49 ER, 6 HR, 19 BB, 99 K

Back to back outings where he wasn't quite as sharp as he was earlier

3B Miguel Andujar:  2-for-5, RS, K, SB (4)

Yankees Minor League Report 7/22/14: Rob Segedin Hits Grand Slam; Robert Refsnyder Adds Three Hits; Latest from Manny Banuelos; Greg Bird Homers for Tampa

In the GCL today, bonus baby Leonardo Molina hit his first professional HR.  The 16-year old CF is hitting .205/.308/.307 in his first 88 professional AB...SS Abiatal Avelino continued his rehab today, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.  The 19-year old hit .294/.349/.387 in 119 AB for Charleston earlier this season before going down with an injury.  He is 11-for-31 in eight games on his rehab.....

LHP Rich Hill:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

5.63 ERA; 38.1 IP, 43 H, 24 R, 24 ER, 3 HR, 23 BB, 49 K
As stated the other day, Burawa is generating a high number of ground balls this season.  Scranton's defense has been in a state of flux, so it could be impacting his overall numbers.  Walks are still high though.

Yankees Minor League Report: DePaula to Padres for Chase Headley

The Yankees acquired third baseman Chase Headley from the San Diego Padres today for minor league RHP Rafael DePaula and major league utility player Yangveris Solarte.

If you have followed the Yankees over the past few seasons, Headley's name has come up frequently.   He is a very good defensive third baseman (the Yankees actually do care about infield defense?) who has been above average offensively in his career, but not in 2014.    Over his career, he is hitting .266/.346/.410 (113 OPS+) in 3,720 plate appearances, while playing his home games in Petco Park.  However, this season, he is hitting only .229/.296/.355 (ugly) in 307 plate appearances.  Not exactly the type of season a player hopes for in their walk year.

A switch-hitter, Headley hits better left-handed, but isn't useless as a right-handed batter (.769 career OPS vs. RHP, .723 vs. LHP.

The Padres didn't take very much in return in this deal.   We all know the Solarte story - he started red-hot and predictably cooled off.  I guess in the end, he ended up doing just enough to actually have trade value.   In that regard, kudos to the scouts who recommended him.

DePaula came out firing in 2013 for Charleston, posting a 2.94 ERA in 13 starts with a 96/23 K/BB ratio over 64.1 innings.  He did enough to earn a slot in the Futures Game, but his season unraveled in Tampa, where he put up a 6.06 ERA in 49 innings with a 50/30 K/BB ratio.

This season, the 23-year old has done a pretty good job in Tampa, compiling a 4.15 ERA over 89 innings with 104 strikeouts and 38 walks.   Over his past six starts, he is 4-0 with a 1.34 ERA, and 33/10 K/BB ratio over 33.2 innings.

DePaula's main pitch is a sinking fastball that can sit 92-94 MPH during most of his starts.  However, it has been reported that he has trouble maintaining that velocity later in games.  He also throws a good slider and a decent change-up.   He seems to fit the profile of a pitcher best suited for a future bullpen role.

Overall, this is a good trade for the Yankees - they didn't give up much to fill an obvious need at third base.   A strong few months may even make him an option beyond this season, though a history of injuries will also be taken into consideration there.

Yankees Minor League Report 7/21/14: Rob Segedin Debuts in Scranton; Gary Sanchez Homers; Pete O'Brien Hits #30; Latest from Ian Clarkin; Luis Torrens Extends Streak to 17

3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
Triple-A debut for Segedin
2B/RF Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-4, 2B (7), RBI, K
It is a bit odd to me what they are doing with Refsnyder - started him in RF tonight.  Why not just use the rest of the season to let him play second base every day?
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, K
Started at 2B - moved to 1B late in the game after Roller was pulled for PR
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, K
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-4, K
If Teixiera is out for any length of time, he may be given his chance.
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-3, RS, BB, SB (2)

RHP Bruce Billings:  7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
RHP Edgmer Escalona (W, 2-2);  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since joining Scranton, he has thrown 14 innings without allowing an earned run (one unearned run) with a 8/2 K/BB ratio

C/1B Pete O'Brien:  5-for-7, 2 2B (10), HR (20), RBI, 3 RS, K
30th HR of the season.  He was struggling badly entering this DH.  (1-for-20 with 9 Ks)
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, 2 K
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-4, RS
.286/.329/.378 in 402 AB; 12-for-38 in last ten games

8-game hitting streak
OF Mason Williams:  3-for-7, 3B (2), RBI, RS, 2 K, SB (20)
If he would get on base more than once a week, those SB totals may go through the roof
SS Ali Castillo:  1-for-6, 2 RS, BB, K, SB (10), CS (3)
C Francisco Arcia:  2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
C/1B Tyson Blaser:  3-for-3, 2 2B (4), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Simply highlighting a strong performance

LHP Francisco Rondon (S, 1):  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
-----------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated St. Lucie, 5-2)

1B Greg Bird:  1-for-2, RBI, 2 BB
36 BB in 65 games.   37-for-117 since the ASB with 12 doubles.
OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, RS, K
8-game hitting streak
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, K
3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-4, 2 K
OF Danny Oh:  1-for-4, 3B (1), 3 RBI, RS
Not much to see here - but he did have the big hit in this particular game.
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-4, RBI, K
At least he has spared us a 3-week or so hot streak that would make us think he may be turning the corner.
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-3, RS, 2 K

RHP Rafael DePaula (W, 6-5):  5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
4.15 ERA; 89 IP, 88 H, 44 R, 41 ER, 5 HR, 38 BB, 104 K
Continues to bounce back after a horrible two-start stretch on 6/12 and 6/18.    Has now allowed five runs in 33.2 IP since those starts with a 33/10 K/BB ratio
LHP Ramon Benjamin:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
4.02 ERA; 15.2 IP, 15 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 8 BB, 16 K

.256/.287/.479 in 219 AB
2B Gosuke Katoh:  2-for-3, SAC
.233/.332/.355 in 279 AB; .316/.393/.432 in 95 AB since ASB
CF Mark Payton:  2-for-5, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
15-for-43 since signing on the dotted line.  Don't get too used to the home runs - most definitely not a major part of his game.
OF Brandon Thomas:  4-for-4, 2B (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS
.167/.273/.237 in 198 forgettable AB
C Eduardo de Oleo:  2-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, RS, 2 K

3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-4, K
.244/.308/.372 in 336 AB; .320/.400/.460 in 100 AB since ASB

3.36 ERA; 61.2 IP, 54 H, 26 R, 23 ER, 5 HR, 20 BB, 68 K
They could be easing Clarkin to the finish line.  Not sure what his IP limit is this season.
RHP Giovanny Gallegos (W, 3-4):  2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Eric Ruth (S, 2):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.91 ERA; 69 IP, 64 H, 33 R, 30 ER, 1 HR, 23 BB, 69 K
Has pitched in all four full-season leagues this season.

Staten Island (Defeated Jamestown, 2-1)

SS Vincent Conde:  1-for-3, BB, 2 K

11.1 IP, 14 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 10 K
Pitched in Charleston last year without much success (4.61 ERA in 80 IP).  23 years old.
RHP Tim Giel (S, 1):  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
The non-drafted FA (last year) has an 8.31 ERA in 13 innings.   If only he could pitch against the New York Yankees lineup nightly.

Yankees Minor League Report 7/20/14: Big Offensive Day in Scranton; Eric Jagielo and Dante Bichette Both Homer; Miguel Sulbaran Continues Hot Streak

Scranton (Crushed Charlotte, 16-5)

C John Ryan Murphy:  2-for-3, 2B (8), 3 RBI, RS, SF, BB, K
I write often about players needing a good game.....that applies to Murphy, who has scuffled for pretty much the entire time since his demotion.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  3-for-6, 2 2B (15), 2 RS, 2 K
They really need to allow Almonte to play RF while putting Ichiro back in his 4th OF role.
2B/RF Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-6, RS, K
3-for-20 in four games since ASB.  Every player has their fair share of slumps...
UTIL Jose Pirela:  2-for-6, 3B (5), 3 RBI, RS
Random fact:  In 2010 (for Tampa), he hit 13 triples.
1B Kyle Roller:  2-for-5, HR (10), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Unlike Pete O'Brien, at least Roller is hitting in the upper minors....and still isn't anything close to a big prospect.  This is his 19th HR of the season, a new career high.
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  3-for-6, HR (8), RBI, 3 RS, K
The 29-year old is having a nice season here, and is playing a lot of third recently.
C/1B Austin Romine:  1-for-4, 2B (12), 2 RS, BB
13-for-34 in last ten games
SS Carmen Angelini:  2-for-5, HR (1), 4 RBI, 2 RS

LHP Matt Tracy (W, 1-2):  5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR
111 IP, 124 H, 45 R, 41 ER, 6 HR, 42 BB, 61 K between Trenton/Scranton
RHP Danny Burawa:  1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
5.79 ERA; 37.1 IP, 41 H, 24 R, 24 ER, 3 HR, 23 BB, 49 K
One thing about Burawa:  He is generating a lot of ground balls in addition to his K rate.  The walks are high, but there could be a little bit of overall bad luck here.
--------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Binghamton, 5-2)

1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  2-for-4, 2B (13), 2 K
.264/.324/.377 in 289 AB.  14-for-39 (.359) in last ten games
C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4
.264/.334/.410 in 307 AB.  16-for-54 (.296) in July, but with little power (two XBH, both doubles)
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-4
3-for-15 since joining level
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-4, RBI
.284/.328/.377 in 398 AB.  20-for-61 in July
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-3, RS, K
.275/.386/.408
The .386 is the most important number.  At 25 years old (and he will be 26 before the 2015 season begins), we aren't talking about a young third base prospect here.  But maybe - just maybe - he can be useful for a few years....
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, 4 K
.226/.272/.511 in 235 AB here; .256/.298/.568 in 347 AB overall with 95 strikeouts.  When he hits them, they go.  But it is almost impossible to live in MLB as a home run hitter alone.  His plate discipline isn't showing signs of improvement, and it is hard to rely on hitting .280 when you aren't exactly fleet afoot.   I am not saying he is a dead prospect - he does have 29 HR, afterall - but what I am saying is that nobody should have unrealistic expectations here.  He is what he is.

LHP Dan Camarena (L, 0-3):  4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 3 HR
10.22 ERA in 12.1 IP for Trenton with a 10/6 K/BB ratio.   Command guys like Camarena can sometimes run into a brick wall as they hit the upper minors.  We aren't quite at the point of saying that yet, but his first three starts here are obviously not very good.
RHP Phil Wetherell:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
4.29 ERA; 21 IP, 23 H, 13 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 20 K, 2.15 GO/AO
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.67 ERA; 37.2 IP, 24 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 12 BB, 51 K between Charleston/Tampa/Trenton.  With Burawa and Montgomery ineffective, Ramirez and Goody hurt, Rumbelow is in a good place on the depth chart at the moment.  He is having a fantastic overall season.
------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated St. Lucie, 4-1)

3B Eric Jagielo:  2-for-4, HR (11), RBI, RS, K
.256/.330/.491 in 176 AB.  First HR here since 5/20, due to injury.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, K
.284/.369/.431 in 348 AB.  Nice way to bounce back after his 20-game hitting streak was snapped.
1B Greg Bird:  1-for-3, BB, K
.274/.360/.427 in 234 AB
OF Aaron Judge:  2-for-4
.311/.427/.495 here; .326/.428/.519 in 337 AB overall
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, RS, K
.216/.287/.283.  Modest 5-game hitting streak
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 2 K
UTIL Anderson Feliz:  1-for-2, SAC

LHP Miguel Sulbaran (W, 2-1):  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
2.26 ERA; 79.2 IP, 66 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 2 HR, 20 BB, 58 K
Is the 20-year old a soft-tossing organizational filler prospect or something more than that?  Time will tell.  Oh, and he has now allowed four runs in his last 51 IP.   Incredible run.
LHP Jacob Lindgren:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
First professional walks allowed (8.2 IP).  Has struck out 19.
RHP Cesar Vargas (S, 4):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
1.80 ERA; 20 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 22 K
--------------------------------------
Charleston (Destroyed by Augusta, 14-3)

CF Dustin Fowler:  1-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, K
Only ten walks in 54 games, so that needs to be worked on.  But the teen has definitely showed off the power potential.
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-4, 2B (18), RS, 3 K
.254/.329/.408 in 346 AB.  He has reached 100 strikeouts on the season.
The hits by Fowler and O'Neill were the only two Charleston had today
SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-1, 2 BB
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-4, K, SB (3)
C Kale Sumner:  0-for-4, 3 K.  Also pitched, throwing two scoreless innings.

LHP Omar Luis (L, 2-4):  2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
5.71 ERA; 41 IP, 41 H, 29 R, 26 ER, 4 HR, 30 BB, 25 K
They could have used the $1M or so spent on him to..to...well, just about anything would have been better.
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
YIKES
RHP Philip Walby:  1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
What a night to be a pitcher....
-------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Jamestown, 7-4)

C Luis Torrens:  2-for-4, 3B (3), RBI, RS, K
Simply tearing up this league right now.  .397/.438/.632 in 17 games
CF Devyn Bolasky:  2-for-5, 2 RS, SB (7)
.289/.309/.367 in 90 AB
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  1-for-5, RBI, RS, SB (3)
.296/.338/.464 in 125 AB
SS Vincent Conde:  0-for-4, RBI, SB (3)
7-for-26 and has yet to strike out
C Isaias Tejada:  1-for-3, 2B (11), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
OF Nathan Mikolas:  2-for-3, RS, BB, SB (5)
.213/.351/.275 in 80 AB
1B Connor Spencer:  1-for-4

RHP Matt Borens:  4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
14.1 IP, 11 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 11 K since joining level
RHP Jordan Cote (W, 1-2):  5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
5.94 ERA; 50 IP, 68 H, 40 R, 33 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 37 K between Charleston/Staten Island

Yankees Minor League Report 7/19/14: Luis Severino Impresses in Trenton Debut; Caleb Smith Impresses in Tampa Debut; Tyler Wade Collects Four Hits

Scranton (Lost to Charlotte, 7-0)

2B/RF Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-4, K
He has obviously been hot most of the year, but is now 2-for-14 since ASB, dropping his average below .300 at this level.  He did take a turn in RF today.
UTIL Jose Pirela:  0-for-3, BB, K
1-for-13 since ASB.  Played 2B tonight.
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-3
OF Zoilo Almonte:  0-for-4, 2 K
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  1-for-4, K
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-3, 2 K

LHP Nik Turley (L, 0-2):  5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, HR
6.14 ERA; 22 IP, 22 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 16 BB, 18 K, 5 HR
Just remember how late he got his season going.  He is essentially in spring training mode.
LHP Rich Hill:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Debut with the franchise
RHP Joel De La Cruz:  2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
-------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Binghamton, 6-1)

3B Rob Segedin:  2-for-3, BB
He has battled injuries, he was ineffective in 2012, etc.  But wow, he has hit very well this season - showing off some discipline and decent doubles power (especially lately).  When you have a black hole as big as the one at third base in the Bronx, you look for anyone who may be able to help.    Now 16-for-37 in last ten games
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  2-for-4, 2B (12), 3 RS, BB
A brief post-ASB spurt (6-for-11) has raised his average to .260.  Obviously, needs to show more than just 11 AB worth of hitting.
C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-5, K
CF Jake Cave:  0-for-3, 2 BB, K
2-for-11 with four walks since joining level
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-4, 2 RS, BB
Played CF tonight; Cave DH'd.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-5

RHP Luis Severino (W, 1-0):  5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
There are some legitimate questions on whether the Yankees rushed him here - but if he throws like this, he will justify the situation for them.
LHP James Pazos:  2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
21.1 IP, 16 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 BB, 23 K since promotion.
----------------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Palm Beach, 5-0)

1B Greg Bird:  2-for-4, 2 2B (21), 2 RBI, RS, BB
The doubles are providing most of his power thus far this year, but there is nothing really wrong with that.  Hopefully the home runs will start coming.
3B Eric Jagielo:  1-for-4, 2B (9), 3 RBI, 2 K
35 RBI in 46 games at this level.
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-4, 3 K
20-game hitting streak snapped
OF Aaron Judge:  2-for-4
Back over .300 here (.303) in 99 AB
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, 2 RS, BB
The only thing that keeps him on this list is the fact that his defense supposedly has remained excellent as the hitting has gone south.
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 2 K

LHP Caleb Smith (W, 1-0):  6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
High-A debut.   Had a 3.10 ERA with 80/35 K/BB ratio over 78.1 IP for Charleston.  Not what you would consider a top prospect, but watch him closely as he moves up the chain.
RHP Taylor Garrison:  2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
First appearance at High-A this season.  Trent Garrison (who went 3-for-4 tonight) was the catcher, making this a brother-to-brother battery.   That is pretty cool.
------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Augusta, 9-7)

SS Tyler Wade:  4-for-5, 2B (14), 2 RBI, RS
Up to .275.
3B Miguel Andujar:  2-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
A 32-for-92 post-ASB splurge has raised his average up to .250.
OF Mark Payton:  0-for-2, 3 RS, 3 BB
13-for-38 with nine walks in 12 games.  Pretty much, he needs to draw plenty of walks if he wants to become a legitimate option.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-4, RS
OF Michael O'Neill:  2-for-5, 2B (17), 2 RBI, K, SB (28)
C Jackson Valera:  2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB

LHP Chaz Hebert:  3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 K
Obviously used a lot of voodoo to get through this outing unscathed.
RHP Angel Rincon (S, 2):  3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Love these rulebook saves - still nothing like the Rangers pitcher who earned a save in Baltimore during a game in which Texas scored 30 or so runs, of course.
--------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Jamestown, 7-1)

C Luis Torrens:  1-for-4, RS
.375 (24-for-64) at this level.
C Isaias Tejada:  3-for-4, 2 2B (10), 2 RBI, RS
Put himself on the map in 2011, but has fallen off of it since then.  Having a strong season here thus far.
OF Austin Aune:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, 2 K
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  2-for-4, RBI, RS, SB (2), CS (1)
As I have said previously, he is doing what a college draftee should do here.  Tough for him to move off of this level right now, with Katoh and Andujar in Charleston, so he will hopefully just continue to rake here and move his way up the chain from there.  (Note that McFarland is not a big prospect - just a potential fast tracker who can play second and third, bats left-handed, etc.).
1B/OF Chris Breen:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, K
.276/.386/.495 in 105 AB for the 20-year old.
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-4, RS, K
1B Bubba Jones:  1-for-3, RBI

RHP Sean Carley:  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
10 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
RHP Dillon McNamara (W, 1-1):  3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
3.27 ERA; 22 IP, 20 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 16 K
RHP Matt Wotherspoon: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Rony Bautista:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.62 ERA; 16.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 12 BB, 19 K

Yankees Minor League Report 7/18/14: Dante Bichette's Streak Reaches 20; Rob Segedin Slugs Three Doubles; Brady Lail Debuts in Tampa

Scranton:

OF Zoilo Almonte:  2-for-4, 2B (13), 2 RS, BB, K
C John Ryan Murphy:  1-for-4, RBI, RS
2B Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-5, K
Seems like he has been back to playing mostly 2B again
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-5, K
Meanwhile, Pirela's time in RF has increased
OF Taylor Dugas: 0-for-4, K
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  1-for-4, RBI
Playing some 3B recently, which is likely out of necessity with no Wheeler or Solarte on the roster.

LHP Ty Webb:  1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Triple-A debut for the 2013 draftee.  (3.96 ERA in 50 IP with 71/16 K/BB ratio)
RHP Edgmer Escalona:  1.1 IP,1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
---------------------------
Trenton

3B Rob Segedin:  3-for-5, 3 2B (17), 3 RBI, 2 RS
.273/.381/.410. Has nine doubles in 15 July games.
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  3-for-4, 2B (11), 3 RBI, K
.256/.317/.367
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-3, 2 RS,2 BB, CS (1)
OF Mason Williams:  0-for-4
Looks like they want to take a nice, long look at Cave as Williams (who is considered a plus-plus-plus defensive CF) moved to RF tonight
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-4, 2B (25), RS, BB, 2 K
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, BB, 2 K

RHP Zach Nuding (W, 5-2):  6 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
I agree with keeping pitchers in a minor league rotation for as long as possible (especially with all of the injuries the Yankees have suffered).  I would just be intrigued to see what Nuding can do in shorter relief stints.
RHP Mark Montgomery:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Diego Moreno (S, 5):  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
------------------------------------
Tampa

3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-2, 2B (24), RS, 2 BB, 1 K
.288/.374/.429 as his hitting streak reaches 20
1B Greg Bird:  2-for-4, 2B (19), RBI, RS, K
.270/.356/.417
While I pointed out some disappointment in his season, bottom line does remain that he is still young, coming off of a back injury that kept him out the first month, and is in a league that favors pitching.  We'll see if his numbers start tracking upward in the second half.
OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, 2 K

2B Angelo Gumbs: 1-for-4

Charleston

1B Reymond Nunez:  2-for-4, 2 HR (3), 3 RBI, 2 K
One of those kids touted as a right-handed power prospect who simply has not been able to translate his raw power into game success.  (tonight is an exception to that rule!)
SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-4, RS
.267/.349/.328 in 344 AB
3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-4
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-3, RS, BB
OF Mark Payton: 0-for-2, RS, 2 BB
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-4, K
OF Dustin Fowler:  0-for-4, K

RHP Andy Beresford (W, 1-0);  5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
First start here since 4/30 (was pitching in Staten Island recently)
RHP Eric Ruth:  3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
RHP Philip Walby (S, 6):  1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
He has pretty good stuff, but obviously must harness it.

Now 20-for-21 stealing

You definitely wouldn't classify this as a good start.
RHP Danny Burawa:  1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
5.70 ERA; 36.1 IP, 39 H, 23 R, 23 ER, 3 HR, 22 BB, 48 K

--------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Binghamton, 8-4)

CF Jake Cave:  1-for-5, 2B (1), RS, K
Double-A debut for the 21-year old.  He hit .304/.354/.395 in 385 AB for Tampa
CF Mason Williams:  2-for-5, 2 RBI, RS, K
DH'd tonight as Cave played center.  I wonder if part of the plan is to have him concentrate more at the plate by DHing a bit more, while Cave mans center.
C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-5, 3 K
3B Rob Segedin:  1-for-4, BB, K
20-for-51 in July
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  1-for-3, BB, K
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, 2 K

LHP Manny Banuelos (L, 0-3):  3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
6.03 ERA; 31.1 IP, 32 H, 23 ER, 21 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 28 K for Trenton

Tampa (Defeated by Palm Beach, 7-3)

1B Greg Bird:  2-for-4, HR (5), RBI, RS
.265/.354/.412 in 226 AB
.233/.281/.367 in 14 July games.
3B Dante Bichette:  2-for-4

19-game hitting streak
OF Aaron Judge:  2-for-4, RS, K
.297/.429/.505 in 91 AB here; .323/.428/.523 in 325 AB overall
2B Angelo Gumbs:  2-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, RS, K
.233/.282/.343 in 236 AB; second consecutive game with HR
3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-4, 2 K
.250/.330/.482 in 164 AB
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-3, BB, K
.215/.286/.283 in 353 AB

LHP Conner Kendrick (L, 3-7):  4 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
6.24 ERA; 53.1 IP, 71 H, 40 R, 37 ER, 1 HR, 22 BB, 43 K
The bullpen may be in his future.  So may be a resume writer.
LHP Jacob Lindgren:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Tampa debut.  Now has 16 strikeouts in seven professional innings.  He has now struck out seven straight hitters (had a 1-inning, 4 K performance his last time out when he was in Charleston).   It likely won't be long before he is trying out Double-A hitters.
RHP Cesar Vargas:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.40 ERA: 48.2 IP, 38 H, 19 R, 13 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 53 K between Charleston/Tampa
-----------------
Charleston (Swept DH from Lexington, 6-2 and 5-1)

3B Miguel Andujar:  4-for-6, 3 2B (18), 4 RBI, 3 RS, BB
His nice turnaround continues.   Andujar was a sleeper prospect entering the season, but had a rough start that he is now rebounding from.   Now 29-for-83 since ASB.
OF Dustin Fowler:  2-for-8, 2B (12), RS, K, CS (2)
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-5, 3B (6), RS, BB, 2 K
SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-6, RS, BB, 2 K
OF Mark Payton:  2-for-4
OF Michael O'Neill:  5-for-8, 3 RS, 2 SB (27)
Raised average up to .252.  Obviously, O'Neill has his flaws - but he has hit well since the calendar turned to June and was a college draftee - may as well just let him play in Tampa now.
C Eduardo de Oleo: 2-for-3, RBI
C Jackson Valera:  5-for-5, 2B (8), 5 RBI, RS
22-year old has pretty much never hit in his years with the organization.   But I am not going to be so mean that I would leave this night out of the report.
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-6, RBI, 3 K
C Kale Sumner:  1-for-2, K
OF Brandon Thomas:  2-for-3, RS, K, SB (10)
All the way up to .150!

RHP Rookie Davis (W, 4-8):  5.2 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
4.66 ERA; 85 IP, 91 H, 48 R, 44 ER, 3 HR, 34 BB, 66 K
Second consecutive nice outing; we'll see if it continues.
LHP Evan Rutckyj (S, 1):  1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Now has 28 K in 17 IP at this level; but his early struggles in Tampa will stick out until he tries out the level again.

LHP Ian Clarkin:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.38 ERA; 58.2 IP, 52 H, 25 R, 22 ER, 5 HR, 19 BB, 64 K
Only threw 22 pitches.  Was just activated from DL, so let us hope that is the reason for the short stint.
RHP Giovanny Gallegos (W, 2-4):  4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
A strong finish is crucial if he wants to regain what was decent prospect status.
---------------
Staten Island (Defeated Williamsport, 5-4)

C Luis Torrens:  1-for-4, 2B (6), K
22-for-53 in July.   I wonder if they will give him some more Charleston AB later this season?
OF Austin Aune:  2-for-4, 2B (10), HR (1), RBI, RS, K, CS (3)
First HR since 2012
1B/OF Chris Breen:  0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K
