Yankees Minor League Report 4/12/14: Almonte Goes Yard as Scranton Splits DH

Scranton (Split DH with Syracuse, 7-1 loss followed by 2-1 win)
OF Zoilo Almonte:  2-for-7, HR (1), RBI, 2 RS, 2 K, SB (1)
Almonte has been off to a very rough start - it is probably nothing more than sample size, though I always wonder if a player who gets a taste of the big leagues loses a bit of concentration once they are shipped back down.  I would assume for most players, that isn't the case.
IF Scott Sizemore:  0-for-6, RS, BB, 4 K, E (1)
9-for-27, though 14 of those outs have been via the strikeout.
OF Ramon Flores:  0-for-3, 3 BB, SB (1)
4-for-27 start, though the three walks today are encouraging.
C John Ryan Murphy:  0-for-3, K
4-for-22
C Austin Romine:  0-for-3
IF Corban Joseph:  1-for-5, 2 K
4-for-19
2B Jose Pirela:  0-for-7
5-for-29
1B/3B Russ Canzler:  1-for-6, RBI, BB, K
7-for-26

RHP Brian Gordon (L, 1-1):  5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Really is only on this report because there is that outside chance he will be used to make a spot start at sometime during the season.  Highly unlikely, though.
LHP Fred Lewis:  2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Seemed that he jumped over Cabral on the depth chart during spring training, but he has struggled so far this season.

RHP Caleb Cotham:  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, WP, Balk
RHP Preston Claiborne:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Daley (W, 1-1):  1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
The Yankees have a lot of young, promising relief arms - but don't sleep on the veteran Daley, who has done a strong job for the Yankees organization, including an impressive cup of coffee with the big club last year.    He had a rough outing last time out, but that has been the exception, not the norm.
------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Erie, 3-2)
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-3, 2B (4), RS, BB
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-4, RBI
10-for-36 (.278) to begin the season.
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-3, BB, K
.333/.429/.567 in 30 AB
3B/OF Tyler Austin: 0-for-4, 3 K
DH'd today.  4-for-21 since coming off of the DL
2B Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-3, K, E (1)
Hitting .156 with 14 strikeouts in 32 AB

RHP Joel De La Cruz (L, 1-1):  6.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Aaron Dott: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Branden Pinder: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
4.2 scoreless innings to start season.  16th round pick in 2011 pitched well in 2011 and 2012, but completely fell apart upon being promoted to Trenton in 2013 (6.29 ERA in 24.1 innings) A demotion back to Tampa stabilized his season.
--------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Daytona, 7-1)

3B Eric Jagielo: 1-for-4, 2B (2), K, E (2)
SS Cito Culver: 2-for-4, SB (1)
He went 13-for-19 stealing bases in 2013.
CF Jake Cave: 2-for-4, 2B (4), BB
8-for-38
C/OF Pete O'Brien: 1-for-4, 2 K
Back in RF tonight.   Some may question what the Yankees are doing, but if they feel O'Brien has a future as an offensive player in the big leagues, they have to move him around the field - he is not going to be a full-time catcher in this organization unless something really bad happens.  Murphy and Sanchez are ahead of him, teenager Luis Torrens is behind him, etc.
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-4, K
2B Angelo Gumbs:  2-for-4
Hitting .257 (9-for-35).  As early as last preseason, mlb.com had him ranked as the #7 prospect in the system.  Injuries and ineffectiveness have dimmed his star, but he has the skills to get himself back on the radar.

LHP Dan Camarena (L, 0-2):  4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
Has a 6.23 ERA in two starts (8.2 IP, 12 H, 11 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR).   There is going to be some growing pains for the 21 year old, who pitched well enough in Charleston last year (4.42 ERA in 112 IP with an 83/19 K/BB ratio)
LHP Ty Webb:  2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Has yet to surrender a gopher ball this year.  (Bad joke?)
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
If the bullpen is a permanent move, he is taking to it thus far.  4 scoreless innings with 6/3 K/BB ratio.
--------------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Augusta, 8-2)

The Riverdogs are a very, very, VERY young team - not sure what their ranking is by age in the Sally League, but there are plenty of teenagers on this roster right now - the point I am getting at is that it likely won't be a pretty W-L season for this squad....

SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-4, K
19-year old is 6-for-28 with four walks, five strikeouts, and three steals in three tries.
SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-3, RS, BB, K
19-year old is 4-for-28 with six walks, eight strikeouts, and three steals in three tries.
OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, K
21-year old is 7-for-32 and is still looking for an XBH.  8/7 BB/K ratio.
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-4, 2 K
19-year old is 7-for-35
1B Mike Ford:  3-for-4, 2B (2), RBI
21-year old non-drafted FA is 12-for-33
OF Michael O'Neill: 0-for-4, RS, 3 K
He is 4-for-34 with 15 strikeouts.  Ouch
CF Brandon Thomas: 0-for-4, K
.194/.237/.367 in 36 AB
C Luis Torrens:  0-for-4, K
17-year old is 2-for-18
IF John Murphy:  2-for-3, 2 2B (3), BB, E (1)

RHP Brady Lail (L, 0-1):  3.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
18th round pick in 2012 has a lot of potential, though obviously this start didn't show that.   He does sport a 75/11 K/BB ratio over 83.2 minor league innings.
RHP Philip Walby:   2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
21-year old was drafted in the 13th round last year.  Very impressive start thus far:  He has yet to allow a run or a hit over four innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.
