Yankees Minor League Report 4/6/14: 11-Run 4th (Including 4 RBI by Gary Sanchez) Helps Trenton Cruise to Victory

Scranton (Split DH with Syracuse, losing 3-0 in Game 1, and winning 5-0 in Game 2)

First things first:  I wondered who would take Austin Romine's spot on the Scranton roster, not even thinking about Jose Gil, who has been in the Yankees' organization since the Reagan administration, I think.

C John Ryan Murphy:  0-for-3
OF Ramon Flores:  0-for-6, RBI, K
IF Scott Sizemore:  2-for-6, 2B (1), BB, 2 K
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-7, RBI, 4 K
IF Corban Joseph:  1-for-4
With some health and some luck, he could be the Yankees second baseman right now.  His 2012 season was very strong - 2013?  Not so much.
2B Jose Pirela:  1-for-6
1B Russ Canzler:  0-for-3
IF Zelous Wheeler: 2-for-4, 2 2B (3), 2 RS, K
SS Carmen Angelini:  2-for-3, 2 2B (2), 3 RBI, RS
I doubt he will see the light of day with the Yankees this year, but it is still scary just how high up the depth chart he is right now.
OF Antoan Richardson:  1-for-2, BB, RS
30-year old has a .500 career major league batting average (4 AB).   He has absolutely no power (12 career minor league HR in a 3,548 PA), but he can steal a base (39-for-46 last year)

RHP Chase Whitley (L, 0-1):  1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Swingman started five games last year, and was 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA overall in 67.2 innings with a 62/21 K/BB ratio.
RHP Graham Stoneburner:   3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
The one-time flamethrower no longer is that.  He only struck out 42 batters in 90 innings last year (struck out 137 in 142 innings way back in 2010)  Injuries have destroyed his career, but he is still doing a solid job at inducing ground balls (1.27 GO/AO rate last year)

RHP Brian Gordon (W, 1-0):  5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
The journeyman right-hander (35) actually pitched briefly for the Yankees in 2011, when he made two starts (5.23 ERA).    That represents his only major league experience.
LHP Cesar Cabral:  0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Yoshinori Tateyama:  0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
His best pitch is a screwball, something you simply do not see very often anymore.
LHP Fred Lewis: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
27-year old was one of the last cuts in camp.  The Yankees drafted him in the 47th round in 2010, and he has steadily made his way up the organization, flashing a 95 MPH fastball along the way.  Lewis is a nice story if he is able to crack the majors this year, and also another example of why it pays to throw with your left hand.
--------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated New Hampshire, 11-5, thanks to an 11-run 4th inning)

C Gary Sanchez: 1-for-2, HR (1), 4 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
3-for-14 to start the season - all for extra bases.
CF Mason Williams: 0-for-3, RS, BB
3B Rob Segedin:  1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-4, RS
C Francisco Arcia:  1-for-4, 3B (1), 2 RBI, RS
IF Ali Castillo: 1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, RS
The 24-year old had a solid year in Charleston two years ago (.307/.381/.431), but fell off a cliff last year in Tampa/Trenton (.228/.294/.290)

RHP Joel De La Cruz (W, 1-0):  6.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
The pitcher that Cashman wanted to give up instead of Corey Black in the Alfonso Soriano deal.  De La Cruz went 6-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 85 innings last year with a 73/27 K/BB ratio.
RHP Manny Barreda: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
The 25-year old has actually done pretty well in the minors (326 K in 302 minor league innings entering today to go along with a 3.75 ERA).    He became a minor league free agent after the 2013 season, but the Yankees thought decently enough of him to resign him.
LHP Aaron Dott:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
The 25-year old was signed out of the independent leagues in 2011, and has done a fair job as he has moved up the ladder one step at a time.  Posted a 3.34 ERA in 26 games for Tampa last year with a 67/28 K/BB ratio over 62 innings.
------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Lakeland, 8-5)

3B Eric Jagielo: 1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, RS, 3 K
Now 1-for-15 with 9 strikeouts, but we will take the home run.
C/OF Pete O'Brien:  2-for-4, RBI
Initially, reports were that the Yankees were going to keep him behind the plate.  Today, he played right field, so it looks like they have not given up on him being a Leyritz-type of guy.
CF Jake Cave: 2-for-5, 2B (1), RS
Although Cave hit only two home runs last year, he also hit 37 doubles and six triples, making you think there could be home run potential in his bat down the road.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-5
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-4, RS
First start at 3B in 2014.  (Jagielo DH'd today)
1B Reymond Nunez:  2-for-4, 2 RBI
His raw power potential just hasn't completely translated into games.  He did hit 15 home runs in Charleston last season, but at 23, he has to start making his move.
2B Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-4, RS

LHP Dan Camarena (L, 0-1):  4.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Camarena has earned some votes for a sleeper prospect.  The 21-year old put up a 4-6 season in Charleston last year with a 4.42 ERA in 112 innings.
RHP Kyle Haynes:  2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
What did you expect for Chris Stewart?   Noah Syndergaard?  The 23-year old put up a 2.38 ERA in Low-A ball last year with a 85/36 K/BB ratio over 83.1 innings.
--------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Augusta, 4-1)

3B Miguel Andujar:  3-for-4, 2B (1), 3 RBI, RS
The types of games that make people sometimes drool over the 19-year old's potential.
OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-3, 2 RS, BB
SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-4, BB
CF Branden Thomas:  0-for-3, BB
2B John Murphy:  0-for-4
Tough assignment for the 6th round pick out of Sacred Heart University.  The Yankees have three legitimate lower-level prospects in Katoh, Wade, and Avelino manning the middle infield spots this year, reducing Murphy to a very low point on the totem pole.  Hit only .173/.226/.220 in his professional debut last year.
1B Mike Ford:  2-for-4, 2B (1), RS
Non-drafted FA last year out of Princeton hit .235/.346/.374 in 115 AB upon his arrival for Staten Island.

RHP Brady Lail (W, 1-0):  6 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
The 18th rounder in 2012 out of high school compiled a 2.92 ERA and 56/8 K/BB ratio over 61.2 innings last year.
RHP Cesar Vargas: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Nick Rumbelow (S, 1):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
7th rounder last year posted a 2.35 ERA and 20/5 K/BB ratio over 23 innings for Staten Island.
