Yankees Minor League Note: Four Players Make NYPL All-Star Team

A quick rundown of the four players that made the squad:

C Luis Torrens, 18 - By far the best prospect of the four that made the squad, the Yankees actually started Torrens (then 17) in Charleston this season, where he went 4-for-26 with a home run.    In 125 AB for Staten Island, he is hitting .304/.362/.448, but is mired in a 5-for-36 slump.  The Yankees have strong catching depth in the upper minors, but they lack some depth underneath Gary Sanchez.  Torrens will hopefully fill in that gap.

C Isaias Tejada, 22  - Tejada was one of those GCL superstars back in 2011, when he hit .331/.404/.568 in 148 AB, but has slumped as a prospect ever since.  Given that this is his third year in Staten Island, it is hard to get excited over him, though he is hitting .314/.375/.551 in 118 AB.

2B Ty McFarland, 22 - Drafted in the 10th round in this year's draft out of James Madison, McFarland (who can also play third and can perhaps even be thrown into left field) is hitting .294/.365/.452 in 177 AB.   McFarland may not have much of a ceiling, but he can move up the ranks quickly, giving the Yankees much needed infield depth in the upper minors.

1B Connor Spencer, 21 - Drafted in the 8th round out of UC-Irvine, Spencer has lived up to his college reputation as a line-drive bat without much overall power.  He is hitting .336/.362/.420 in 119 AB.  Obviously, a player who is seemingly confined to first base without much (if any) power upside is going to be limited as an overall prospect.    At a listed 6'2", 215, it is always possible the Yankees can help him develop the power needed for him to be taken seriously as a prospect, but consider it a bit of a long shot.
