Yankees Minor League Report 8/14/14: Greg Bird Homers; Chris Breen Homers x 2

milb.com has updated their player pages - they are much cleaner, but also take some getting used to.  For insane minor league "bloggers" like myself, I only wish they would have incorporated their changes in 2015.

Later reports recently due to a computer crash.  Hopefully I will be up and running again within a few days.

Scranton (Lost to Louisville, 8-5)

Robert Refsnyder got the night off.

UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-3, 2B (19), RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K
7-for-42 in last ten games.
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
I have received a few e-mails in my Google mail about Dugas (by the way, feel free to post your questions instead of e-mailing!)  The bottom line is that Dugas is not very big, doesn't profess much power, but can hit for average, draw some walks, and has enough speed to steal a few bases.  His potential is very limited because of the lack of power and the fact he is not a center fielder.  A very poor man's Brett Gardner.  I think of him as an old-school NL pinch-hitter type, who can slap a single to start a 9th inning rally.  But NL teams really don't employ players who simply pinch-hit anymore.
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-3, BB
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  1-for-4, K
IF Corban Joseph:  2-for-4, RS
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-3, BB, K
Down to .167

RHP Zach Nuding (L, 3-5):  5 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
Don't be surprised if he comes to spring training 2015 trying out as a middle reliever.
RHP Branden Pinder:  1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
LHP Ty Webb:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP (?) Jose Gil:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
He is actually an organizational backup catcher who never plays.  I wonder if he is just kept around because the Yankees see potential as a future coach.  Anyway, due to last night's marathon, they needed someone to pitch tonight.
-----------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Altoona, 4-3)

1B Greg Bird:  1-for-3, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
Seven XBH in 36 AB since joining the level.  Has six walks and 11 strikeouts.
CF Jake Cave:  2-for-5, 2 2B (6), RS, 2 K
.292/.370/.472 since joining the level.  As has been said many times, his full potential is based on whether or not he can convert all of those doubles and triples (33 this season) into some extra home runs (4 this year).
RF Tyler Austin:  1-for-3, RBI, BB
37-for-101 since ASB
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-4, 2 K
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-3, BB, K
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-3, 2B (29), RBI, RS
Has hit safely in seven of last eight games; all 1-hit affairs.

LHP Dan Camarena (W, 1-5):  6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
6-10 with a  3.54 ERA between Tampa/Trenton with a 93/40 K/BB ratio over 122 IP.  Of course, most of the "good" stuff came while he was in Tampa.
RHP Mark Montgomery (S, 2):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
"Classic" stat line for Montgomery.....
-----------------------------------
Tampa (Split DH with Lakeland, losing 1-0 before winning 4-3)

3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-4, 2 BB, 2 K
.244/.341/.468.  Again, if he performed like this at the plate in the majors, the Yankees would take it - but this is Tampa, not the majors.
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-6, RBI, 2 K
.271/.404/.441 in 177 AB since joining level.  2-for-21 slide.
OF Mark Payton:  0-for-2, BB
OF Ericson Leonora:  2-for-6, K
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-6, 3 K
C Kyle Higashioka:  2-for-2, 2B (1), HR (1), RBI, 2 RS, BB
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, 2 RBI

RHP Brady Lail (L, 1-1):  5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
9-5, 4.10 ERA with a 104/21 K/BB ratio over 116 IP with Charleston/Tampa.
RHP Philip Walby:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

LHP Caleb Smith (W, 3-1):  5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, HR
8-8 with a 3.56 ERA between Charleston/Tampa with a 105/41 K/BB ratio over 103.2 innings.  Overall, a good season for Smith, though he hasn't been as good in his five starts with Tampa.
RHP Cesar Vargas (S, 8):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
-------------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Rome, 3-2)

SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-3, RBI, BB, K, CS (11)
.280/.355/.348 in 446 AB.  Wade has played a lot of SS this year due to Avelino's injuries, but doesn't appear to be wearing down in his first full season as a professional.  The 20-for-31 stealing will need to be worked on.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-2, 2 BB
Second consecutive 2-walk game, giving him 55 in 107 games on the season.  If he can keep this good walk rate while raising his average a bit, he will truly be someone to watch.
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-4, K
.259/.314/.385 in 421 AB.  .319/.373/.449 in 185 AB since ASB
OF Michael O'Neill:  0-for-4, 2 K
1B Mike Ford:  1-for-4, K
OF Brandon Thomas:  2-for-3, 3B (2), RBI, BB
.197/.313/.297 in 249 AB.    .257/.364/.363 in 113 AB since ASB.  Yes, he was THAT bad prior to the ASB.

RHP Andy Beresford (L, 1-1):  5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
3.79 ERA; 38 IP, 36 H, 19 R, 16 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 16 K
RHP Conor Mullee:  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Oft-injured 26-year old has thrown well at levels he is obviously old for.  I will assume that they will probably fast-track him in 2015, if he is still around and healthy.
RHP Eric Ruth:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
-----------------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Connecticut, 5-2)

LF Chris Breen:  2-for-4, 2 HR (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
.282/.375/.524 in 170 AB for the 20-year old.  He has earned a promotion to a full-season league in 2015.   This is nice to see, as he actually did struggle in the GCL.
1B Connor Spencer:  3-for-4
.366/.392/.455 in 134 AB.  Who needs to walk when you can hit .366?
SS Vincent Conde:  0-for-3, BB
.237/.324/.258 in 97 AB.  One of the last (if not THE last) players to sign after the 2014 draft.
RF Austin Aune:  1-for-4, RS, 3 K
.223/.287/.385 in 179 AB with 75 strikeouts.  Can he reach 100 in a short-season league?  The suspense is killing me.
C/CF Collin Slaybaugh:  1-for-4, RBI, K
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-3, K
IF Jose Javier:  2-for-3, 3B (1), RS

RHP Jonathan Holder:  4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
2.77 ERA: 26 IP, 29 H, 12 R, 8 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 22 K for the 6th rounder out of Miss. St.
LHP Ethan Carnes (S, 1):  3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR
I have an idea for STATS:  A new statistic called the "ineffective save"
