Yankees Minor League Report 8/9/14: John Ryan Murphy & Caleb Smith Leave Early; Tyler Austin Adds Three Hits to Ledger; Connor Spencer Celebrates With 4-Hit Night

Scranton (Lost to Columbus, 5-3)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-4, RBI
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, RBI, K
C John Ryan Murphy:  0-for-2
Left game early.  There doesn't appear to be an obvious reason why.  Could it be that Cervelli's back stiffened up after getting HBP this afternoon?  I guess we will find out.
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-3, BB, K
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  0-for-3, BB
IF Corban Joseph:  1-for-4, 3B (2), RS, K
3B Rob Segedin:  1-for-2, SF, RBI
OF Antoan Richardson:  2-for-4, 3B (4), 2 RS, SB (24)
Still my #1 "surprise" candidate for a 9/1 callup - just based on his ability to run fast and steal bases at a high percentage.

RHP Zach Nuding:  5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
3.72 ERA; 133 IP, 135 H, 60 R, 55 ER, 13 HR, 35 BB, 98 K between Trenton/Scranton.   Still a candidate to move to the bullpen.
Switch Pat Venditte (L, 2-4);  3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
He deserves his chance.....to be a coach?  A broadcaster?  Scorekeeper?
RHP Edgmer Escalona:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
20 IP, 16 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 14 K since being picked up off of the scrap heap.
-------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Bowie, 6-4)

RF Tyler Austin:  3-for-5, RS, K
Back-to-back three hit games as he continues to show off his bat since the All-Star Break.  Is it a tease, or a sign that the wrist is finally starting to completely heal?
1B Greg Bird:  2-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
8-for-24 since promotion with three walks.
CF Jake Cave:  2-for-5, 3B (5), RS, K
5th triple for Trenton in only 22 games.
C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-5
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, K
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, K
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-5, RBI
Has mastered the art of the 1-hit game.

LHP Dan Camarena (L, 0-5):  3.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
Double-A is tough on anyone - but it can really expose LHP who rely a lot more on deception and changing of speeds than pure stuff.  There is time for Camarena to adjust, but early returns are terrible.
LHP Jacob Lindgren:  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
0 Ks?   Worthless bum.
RHP Danny Burawa:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
After an extended string of misery, he has turned in a few strong games in a row.
LHP James Pazos:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
1.20 ERA for Trenton over 30 innings with a 32/13 K/BB ratio.
--------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Dunedin, 2-1)

3B Eric Jagielo:  2-for-4, RBI, BB
Was 4-for-24 in August entering this game, so he needed a game like this.
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-4, BB, 3 K
Now has 76 walks and 106 strikeouts in 111 games between Charleston/Tampa
OF Mark Payton:  1-for-3, 2B (3), RS, 2 BB, K, CS (1)
Now 1-for-4 stealing bases in his very brief minor league career.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, BB, SB (12)
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 2 K
OF Ericson Leonora:  1-for-4
1-for-11 since promotion

LHP Caleb Smith:   0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Left game after rehabbing slugger Edwin Encarnacion singled to begin the game.    The single was deflected off of Smith.
RHP Kyle Haynes (W, 5-5):  3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
3.12 ERA; 57.2 IP, 56 H, 30 R, 20 ER, 1 HR, 30 BB, 43 K
Acquired for Chris Stewart of all players.
LHP Ramon Benjamin:  2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.21 ERA: 28 IP, 27 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 25 K
RHP Cesar Vargas (S, 7):  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.03 ERA; 31 IP, 19 H, 10 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 36 K
---------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Rome, 2-1)

3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-5, 2B (22), 2 RBI, K
That is right - five AB in a game where his team only scored two runs.  Charleston had 11 hits and walked four times.   As for Andujar, he now has 60 RBI in 108 games.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  2-for-4, 2B (17), K, SB (17)
.232/.333/.346 in 332 AB with 49 walks and 122 strikeouts.  17-for-27 SB.
OF Dustin Fowler:  1-for-5, RS, K
SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-4, BB, 2 K
.277/.351/.340 in 429 AB.  The walk was actually intentional, which is weird given that (once again) Wade has ZERO home runs in his career.
OF Michael O'Neill: 3-for-5, RS, CS (7)
Nice way to honor his uncle on Paul O'Neill Day (no reports of any tantrums, however)
1B Mike Ford:  1-for-3, BB, K
C Kale Sumner:  0-for-2, 2 BB

RHP Andy Beresford:  4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
3.62 ERA; 32.1 IP, 31 H, 16 R, 13 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 14 K
The 6'7" RHP is already 24 years old, so he will have to start moving quickly.   Drafted in the 19th round out of UNLV last year.
RHP Angel Rincon (W, 4-3):  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.68 ERA; 51.1 IP, 42 H, 23 R, 21 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 46 K
RHP Eric Ruth (S, 4):  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
As stated a few times, he has pitched in all four full season leagues this season - bouncing around wherever he is needed.  Has a 84/25 K/BB ratio in 78.1 innings, which covers 29 games (six starts)
--------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Mahoning Valley, 11-6)

1B Connor Spencer:  4-for-4, 2 2B (10), 2 RS
Nice way to celebrate his All-Star Game selection.   Now hitting .358.
OF Nathan Mikolas:  2-for-3, 2B (5), 3B (1), 4 RBI, RS, BB
I say it often:  Player X needed a game like this.  Tonight, Player X is Mikolas, who is hitting .210 on the season.
OF Austin Aune:  1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
.214/.279/.375 in 168 AB.   He shows off this occasional power likely due to one thing:  Athletically, he is a very talented individual, and that will sometimes take over in any given at-bat.  The overall body of work, however, remains depressing.
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  1-for-5
SS Vincent Conde:   1-for-5
OF Devyn Bolasky:  0-for-3, 2 BB
1B/LF Chris Breen:  0-for-3, RS, BB, 3 K

RHP Jordan Foley (L, 0-1):  3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
LHP Jordan Montgomery:  1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Yankees are simply getting his feet wet right now - someone to watch going into 2015 as a starter.
