Yankees Minor League Report 8/1/14: Manny Banuelos Earns First Win in 3 Years; Tyler Austin Homers; Greg Bird's 3-Hit Night

Scranton (Defeated Gwinnett, 7-2)

UTIL Adonis Garcia:  3-for-4, HR (9), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
2B Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-5, 2B (11), 3 K
He has struck out 42 times in 48 games since joining level (had 38 in 60 games in Trenton and 82 in 130 games last year (to go with his 84 walks))
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-4, HR (11), RBI, RS, BB
With O'Brien gone, he is the new organizational HR leader with 20 between Trenton/Scranton
C John Ryan Murphy:  1-for-5, RBI, K
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K
Played SS tonight, along with RF.   Has hit over .300 in every month other than April.
OF Taylor Dugas:  3-for-4, RS
IF Corban Joseph:  2-for-3, 2B (9), 2 RS, BB
Hitting .260 on the season in 192 AB.  15-for-37 in July.

RHP Bryan Mitchell:  5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
2.88 ERA; 25 IP, 26 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 10 BB, 21 K since joining level.   Last three starts:  17 IP, 16 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 15 K
LHP Jeremy Bleich:  2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
-----------------------
Trenton (Defeated Portland, 5-1)

RF Tyler Austin:  3-for-4, HR (7), RBI, 2 RS
23-for-57 since ASB with five doubles and four home runs.
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-4, K
Hitting .350 (21-for-60) since joining level.  9-game hitting streak.
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-4
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, RBI
In case you were curious, they are playing Cave in CF some days, Williams in CF other days.  Sometimes, the player left out is playing LF, RF, or DH.
OF Ben Gamel:  0-for-4, K
Also has some CF experience, but with Williams and Cave on this roster, he's not playing there anytime soon.
SS Ali Castillo:  1-for-3, HR (2), 3 RBI, RS
The next Pete O'Brien!  He is playing some of the part, with his .289 OBP entering the game.

LHP Manny Banuelos (W, 1-3):  5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
4.37 ERA; 45.1 IP, 35 H, 25 R, 22 ER, 6 HR, 19 BB, 39 K
First win since 2011, believe it or not (didn't win in six starts in 2012, missed all of 2013, and has only recently began to throw enough innings in a game to even qualify for a win).  Threw 80 pitches tonight, so he is back in that regard.
RHP Nick Goody:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
Expect him in the 2015 bullpen mix
LHP James Pazos:  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.33 ERA; 27 IP, 18 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 28 K
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Trenton has a decent array of relief prospects right now - the Yankees don't need all of them to flourish, but a few would be nice.
---------------------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Jupiter, 6-4)

1B Greg Bird:  3-for-5, 2B (22), RBI
OF Aaron Judge:  2-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
Up to 71 walks in 105 games.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-5, RBI
3B Eric Jagielo:  1-for-5, 2 K
Has hit for a higher avg. vs LHP (.288 - .240), but draws more walks and hits for more power vs. RHP.
SS Cito Culver:  3-for-5, RS, K
UTIL Anderson Feliz:  2-for-3, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 RS

LHP Derek Callahan:  4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
High-A debut after posting a 3.68 ERA in 14.2 IP for the GCL squad.   16th round pick in 2014 out of Gonzaga.  He has good size, throws hard enough for a LHP (hits the low 90s) and has a pretty good slider.   For him to remain any kind of hopeful as a starter, he will need to work hard on a third pitch - his curve isn't very good and his change-up is developing.
----------------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Hagerstown, 4-2)

SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-3, RBI, RS, SF, SB (17)
Now 46-for-151 (.305) since ASB
3B Miguel Andujar:  2-for-4, RBI, K
The right-handed batter is having trouble vs. LHP (12-for-86 with four XBH entering tonight)
SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-4, 2 K
Simply off his game since his return from the DL
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-4, 2B (16), K
36-for-120 (.300) since ASB
OF Mark Payton:  3-for-5, RS, K
OF Dustin Fowler:  0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
First game since 7/23, for reasons unknown.
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-4, 2 RBI, SB (32), CS (5)
UTIL John Murphy:  2-for-4, RS

RHP Gabriel Encinas:  3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
2014 is essentially a rehab stint for him.  Strongest game since he came back.
RHP Luis Niebla (W, 1-0):  4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Angel Rincon (S, 3):  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
3.88 ERA; 46.1 IP, 37 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 13 BB, 41 K
Signed in 2010, and suspended for 50 games during that season, Rincon has worked his way up to be an organizational type of reliever.

Staten Island (Lost to Lowell, 6-3)

C Luis Torrens:  1-for-4, BB
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  1-for-3, 2B (15), 2 RBI, BB, K
Has 31 RBI in 41 games.  Call him up!
RF Austin Aune:  1-for-3, 2B (13), RS, BB, 2 K
1B Connor Spencer:  1-for-4, 2B (6), K
C/CF Collin Slaybaugh:  1-for-5, RBI
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-3, RS, K

RHP Matt Borens:  4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
LHP Rony Bautista:  2.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 WP
Someone tame this dude before someone gets hurt
LHP Ethan Carnes:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
1.80 ERA; 20 IP, 18 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 22 K
RHP Matt Wotherspoon (L, 2-2): 1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Pitt grad has a 20/3 K/BB ratio over 21.1 IP since signing.
