Yankees Minor League Report 8/7/14: Ian Clarkin Debuts in Tampa; Angelo Gumbs Homers Twice

Gosh, typing up these reports on a night when the offense throughout the organization is stagnant is very tough.   0-for-this, 0-for-that.  Go play in some Independent League, fellows - leave us alone!

Scranton
(Lost to Columbus, 7-0)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  3-for-4, 2B (13), K
32nd double of the season between Trenton/Scranton.  Back over .300 (.302) since promotion.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, 2B (16), K
.281/.329/.492 in 327 AB
C John Ryan Murphy:  0-for-2, BB
UTIL Jose Pirela:  0-for-4, K
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-4, K
.278/.372/.472 in 288 AB since promotion
OF Taylor Dugas:  0-for-3, K
Hitting .300 (33-for-110) since promotion
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-3
8-for-48 (.167) since promotion
C Austin Romine:  0-for-4
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  0-for-3, K

RHP Chris Leroux (L, 4-3):  5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
Well, if someone is going to get rocked, may as well be Chris Leroux.
RHP Branden Pinder:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Injury will keep him from the 2014 major league bullpen, but he should contend for a slot next year.
LHP Ty Webb:  2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
Well, the one good part about this is that the runs came in his second inning of work, and he logged 33 pitches on the night.    In 59.1 IP this season, he now has a 85/19 K/BB ratio.
------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Altoona, 5-0.   How about some offense, boys?)

3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-3, 2B (1)
Double-A debut
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-3, K
RF Tyler Austin:  0-for-4, K
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-4
.281/.323/.368 in 468 AB.   Ever been stuck in quicksand?   If so, you know how it feels to follow Ben Gamel.  His stat line never changes.
CF Jake Cave:  0-for-4
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-3, K

RHP Joel De La Cruz (L, 3-3):  5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Pretty much a standard ground-ball fest from De La Cruz.
RHP Mark Montgomery:  2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
Finally, a stat line that matches up with how he is actually throwing.
------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Brevard County, 6-4)

2B Angelo Gumbs:  2-for-3, 2 HR (5), SF, 4 RBI, 2 RS
Where the heck did this come from?
OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K
Continues to impress in his first season of professional ball.  Still wish he would have signed early last year so that he could play, but obviously it didn't matter too much.
3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K
CF Mark Payton:  2-for-5, 2 2B (2), RS
3-for-16 since promotion; .330/.407/.470 in 100 AB overall
1B Matt Snyder:  3-for-4, 2 2B (14), RBI, 2 RS, K
.276/.324/.412 in 170 AB
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-3, SAC, K
C Trent Garrison:  3-for-4

LHP Ian Clarkin (W, 1-0):  5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
High-A debut for the 19-year old.   Posted a 3.21 ERA and 71/22 K/BB ratio over 70 innings in Charleston.
RHP Brady Lail:  3.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K - Reliever Alex Smith allowed two of these three runs to score as inherited runners.
4.20 ERA; 111.1 IP, 124 H, 58 R, 52 ER, 7 HR, 20 BB, 102 K between Charleston/Tampa.  May not be an awesome stat line, but the soon-to-be 21-year old has done a good enough job this year.
-----------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Rome, 3-1)

SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-5, 2 K
All the way down to .240 thanks to a 5-for-48 mega-slump.
SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-4, K
.278/.350/.342 in 421 AB
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-3
.256/.313/.387 in 395 AB.  Left game early.
OF Dustin Fowler:  2-for-4, RS
.250/.287/.451 in 244 AB.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-2, 2 BB, CS (10)
.228/.332/.343 in 324 AB.  Has drawn a decent number of walks (49) but is getting caught stealing too much to go along with the high K-rate.
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-3, BB, K
.253/.323/.395 in 403 AB
1B Mike Ford:  2-for-4, SB (2)

4.46 ERA in 36.1 IP with a 49/31 K/BB ratio

1B/LF Chris Breen:  1-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS
Broke a scoreless tie in Top of the 9th.
C Luis Torrens:  0-for-4, 2 K
1B Connor Spencer:  2-for-4, RS
Up to .339 (39-for-115)
SS Vincent Conde:  2-for-4, SB (6)
2B Ty McFarland:  1-for-1, 2 BB, CS (3)
.295/.365/.445 in 173 AB
C/CF Collin Slaybaugh:  0-for-2, BB, K, CS (2)
CF Devyn Bolasky:  0-for-1
Replaced Slaybaugh

RHP Jordan Cote:  5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
He has struggled so badly this year (6.36 ERA in 58 IP) that this outing was sorely needed.

RHP Joe Harvey (S, 1):  0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
