Yankees Minor League Report 8/3/14: Michael Pineda Returns; Aaron Judge Goes Yard; Jacob Lindgren Strikes Out Four in One Inning....Again

Scranton (Defeated Syracuse, 3-1)

1B Kyle Roller:  2-for-4, HR (12), 2 RBI, RS, K
21st HR of the season between Trenton/Scranton.  Hitting .283/.378/.486 in 276 AB since his promotion here.  I do wonder if the Yankees will carry him in September as a bench bat (40-man roster room disclaimer applied)
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, 2B (17), RBI, K
.313/.358/.440 in 434 AB
2B Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-4
.299/.396/.481 in 187 AB since promotion; .323/.390/.518 overall
3B Rob Segedin:  1-for-3
8-for-41 since promotion with three walks.  Had 42 walks in 80 games in Trenton
C/1B Austin Romine:  0-for-3
.252/.315/.374 in 246 AB
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4
.283/.329/.498 in 315 AB
UTIL Adonis Garcia: 1-for-4, RS, K
.320/.353/.481 in 316 AB
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  0-for-3
Played SS today

RHP Michael Pineda: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Threw 58 pitches, 37 of which were for strikes.  He will make at least one more start here.
LHP Ty Webb: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.45 ERA; 57.1 IP, 47 H, 22 R, 22 ER, 3 HR, 18 BB, 81 K
RHP Zach Nuding (W, 3-4):  4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Promoted from Trenton, but not sure if this was a one-shot deal to piggyback on Pineda's start, or if he is here for the rest of the season.  Regardless, he has pitched well in Trenton (2.71 ERA), but not so well here (5.80 ERA), making today's appearance somewhat encouraging.
RHP Brandon Pinder (S, 1):  0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
First game back off of his rehab stint in the GCL (four appearances).  Pinder is a 2015 bullpen candidate, assuming health and all that jazz.

Trenton (Lost to Portland, 4-1    Recently acquired Eduardo Rodriguez (from the Baltimore organization) struck out 7 in 5.1 innings today vs. the Thunder)

UTIL Dan Fiorito:  2-for-3, HR (4), RBI, RS, BB, K
You know it is a slow day at a level when Dan Fiorito gets top billing.
RF Tyler Austin: 1-for-4, 2B (16), K
.274/.332/.407 in 339 AB; 25-for-65 with nine XBH since ASB
CF Jake Cave:  0-for-4, 3 K
So much for those Willie Mays comparisons.
OF Ben Gamel:  0-for-0, HBP
Designated hitter was pulled after getting HBP in first at-bat.  Hitting .281/.324/.371.
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, K
.211/.277/.275 in 418 AB
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-4, 2 K
I bet he never gets a hit in Double-A

RHP Jairo Heredia:  4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
3.82 ERA; 61.1 IP, 61 H, 28 R, 26 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 65 K
Interesting - as soon as his prospect status is derailed almost completely due to injury, he decides to put up a season where health has not been an issue.   Damn.
RHP Danny Burawa:  1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
He has been so thoroughly rocked around since starting the season relatively strong that you wonder if something is bothering him.  Attrition is also possible, but wow - he has simply been terrible.
RHP Mark Montgomery: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
11 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 10 K since demotion; 44/23 K/BB ratio in 40.2 IP overall.
------------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Jupiter, 9-1, in a rain-shortened contest.  Just when it looked like they were going to make a huge comeback...)

OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-3, HR (5), RBI, RS, K
14th HR between Charleston/Tampa.   Hitting .293/.423/.456 in 147 AB since promotion with 33 walks in 42 games.  Overall, he has 71 walks and 100 strikeouts in 107 games.
OF Mark Payton:  1-for-3
High-A debut.   Oh, and by the way, these two hits represented the Tampa offense today.
3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-3, 2 K
.250/.335/.464 in 220 AB.
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-3
Down to .273/.353/.414 in 399 AB; 1-for-12 in three August games.
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-2, BB, K
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-2, K

LHP Caleb Smith (L, 2-1):  3.1 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR
ERA jumps from 2.65 to 5.31 (only his fourth start here).  Overall, has a 3.56 ERA in 98.2 IP with a 96/40 K/BB ratio between Charleston/Tampa.
RHP Cesar Vargas:  2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
2.54 ERA; 56.2 IP, 44 H, 22 R, 16 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 63 K
LHP Jacob Lindgren:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Second time he has struck out four in one inning this season.   Now has 17 strikeouts in 7.1 IP since joining this level and 30 strikeouts in 13.1 IP (42 outs, since he has those two 4-out innings) overall.   Has allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in those 13.1 innings.  In other words, he is doing exactly what everyone expected him to do.

Charleston (Defeated Hagerstown, 8-1)

SS Tyler Wade: 3-for-4, 2B (18), RBI, 3 RS

In a 2-for-37 slump entering today.
1B Mike Ford:  1-for-3, HR (11), SF, 4 RBI, RS
First game since 7/16.  Now has three HR in last six games played.
3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K
OF Dustin Fowler: 1-for-3, RS, BB
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-4, 2 K
OF Michael O'Neill:  0-for-3, HBP, SB (33)

RHP Rookie Davis (W, 6-8):  6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
4.50 ERA; 102 IP, 109 H, 55 R, 51 ER, 4 HR, 37 BB, 81 K
Last 11 starts:  3.60 ERA; 55 IP, 55 H, 22 R, 22 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 43 K
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
--------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Auburn, 5-4)

C Luis Torrens:  1-for-3, 2B (9), 2 RBI, BB
Torrens is very important in this system; if they decide to make trades form their catching depth, he is going to have to jump in and become their next big catcher on the horizon.  He is hitting extremely well here, and is years away from being 20, never mind a major league ballplayer.
RF Austin Aune:  1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS, K
1B/OF Chris Breen: 2-for-4, 2B (7), RS, K
SS Vincent Conde:  1-for-3, RS, BB, SB (5)
OF Devyn Bolasky:  2-for-4, BB, SB (9)
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  0-for-4
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-3, RS, BB, K

LHP Jordan Montgomery:  2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Has only thrown 11.2 innings in six games (five "starts"), so he is being eased into his professional career.
RHP Jordan Foley:  4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
3.38 ERA; 21.1 IP, 20 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 8 BB, 24 K
5th round pick out of Central Michigan University.
