Yankees Minor League Report 8/17/14: Robert Refsnyder's 3-Hit Night; Greg Bird's Power Surge Continues

Scranton (Defeated Pawtucket, 9-4)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  3-for-6, 2B (15), RBI, K
Back up to an even .300 in 233 AB since joining level
UTIL Jose Pirela:  2-for-4, RS, 2 BB
Just like that, he is back on a five-game hitting streak
OF Zoilo Almonte:  2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K, SB (6)
The Yankees should give most of Ichiro's playing time to Almonte in September.  But will they?
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  3-for-4, 2 2B (25), RBI, 2 RS, BB
OF Taylor Dugas:  3-for-5, RBI, K
Up to .314 since joining level.  As I said, he does have some offensive game in him.
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-5, 2B (19), RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
SS Carmen Angelini:  2-for-5, HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Back-to-back games with HRs for Carmen Angelini?
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-4, SF, RBI, K
That's correct, kid - you have been demoted below Carmen Angelini.

LHP Nik Turley (W, 3-2):  5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, HR
5.12 ERA; 45.2 IP, 40 H, 28 R, 26 ER, 8 HR, 34 BB, 35 K
Switch Pat Venditte:  2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Bowie, 8-1)

1B Greg Bird:  2-for-4, 2B (4), HR (5), RBI, RS, K
Five home runs (nine XBH overall) in 43 AB since joining Trenton.  The 21-year old is giving people a bit of a reason to start getting excited.
RF Tyler Austin:  0-for-4, 3 K
.282/.340/.429 in 380 AB.  Hitting so well lately, that we will let this performance slide by.
CF Jake Cave:  0-for-5, 2 K
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-3, BB, K
Started off well enough here, but is now 6-for-31.  Four walks, four strikeouts.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-4, K
CF Mason Williams:   1-for-3, BB

LHP Francisco Rondon (L, 2-2):  3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
3.00 ERA; 42 IP, 31 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 22 BB, 36 K
Started tonight, which probably was due to a shortage of starters.  He was awful when they tried him out in the rotation last year.
RHP Danny Burawa:  2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
13/4 K/BB ratio in 11 IP since demotion.
RHP Mark Montgomery:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
---------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Daytona and some pitcher named Rob Zastryzny, 10-2.  I'd stop blogging if the Yankees traded for this guy)

RF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, 2B (6), RS, BB, 2 K
.270/.404/.438 in 185 AB since joining Tampa.  Even during his slump, he has continued to draw some walks.
3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-4, K
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-2, RBI, 3 BB
.215/.290/.279 in 452 AB.   There was a time (2012 to be exact) when it looked like maybe he would at least have good plate discipline, as he walked 71 times that year.   He does have 50 this year, but just can't freaking hit otherwise.
CF Mark Payton:  0-for-4, BB, K
.231/.362/.513 in 12 games since joining level; .317/.417/.504 in 123 AB overall
UTIL Jose Rosario:  1-for-4, 3B (4), RBI, BB
Yes, Tampa sure did bat a lot today for a team that scored two runs on four hits.  Thank the ten walks they drew.

LHP Conner Kendrick (L, 4-8):  3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
6.19 ERA in 68.1 IP for the 9th rounder from the 2013 draft
RHP Kyle Haynes:  2 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Now this is the stat line you expect from someone you acquire for Chris Stewart.
RHP Philip Walby:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
4.14 ERA; 45.2 IP, 32 H, 27 R, 21 ER, 0 HR, 36 BB, 60 K
--------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Rome, 7-2)

OF Michael O'Neill:  3-for-4, HR (10), 2 RBI, RS, SB (37)

C Kale Sumner:  1-for-3, HR (4 - Grand Slam), 4 RBI, RS
.245/.426/.406 in 106 AB

First game since 8/12.  Slump continues.

1B Mike Ford:  1-for-4

RHP Gabriel Encinas:   3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
LHP Chaz Hebert (W, 3-3):  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Staten Island (Lost to Tri-City, 6-1)

2B/3B Ty McFarland:  1-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS, K
