Yankees Minor League Report 8/10/13: Slade Heathcott Leads Trenton to Victory; Rafael DePaula Continues to Struggle for Tampa

Scranton (Lost to Buffalo, 6-2)

Melky Mesa:  2-for-3, 2B (13), RS - 14 hits in last 38 AB.
JR Murphy:  1-for-4, 2B (16), RBI - Now has 26 doubles and 9 home runs in 347 total AB.   He has been slumping a bit, but his OPS for Scranton is not far off from what he did in Trenton - which is a good sign.
Ronnier Mustelier:  0-for-3, RBI, BB - Complete waste of a season for Mustelier, who simply has not hit to his 2012 levels.
Adonis Garcia:  2-for-4, 2B (6), RS - 28-year old Cuban OF is hitting .282 for Scranton in 124 AB.

Mark Montgomery:  1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR (3.38 ERA; 40 IP, 36 H, 17 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 25 BB, 49 K) - As a general rule, I don't get disappointed often with relief prospects.  The Yankees have plenty of them (and have some current starters who are probably going to be converted at some point).  Still, if you told me back in April that it would be August and Mark Montgomery still hadn't made his major league debut, I would have cringed.
Yoshinori Tateyama:  2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Sam Demel:  1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K (1.56 ERA; 40.1 IP, 29 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 HR, 17 BB, 50 K) - Did enough this year to get back to the majors, but really hasn't been needed. (plus he did miss some time with an injury)
Cesar Cabral:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K - I will be intrigued to see how he does in Spring Training, 2014.  If Boone Logan is given his walking papers, Cabral will likely be in a competition.
---------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Akron, 3-2, in 13 innings)

Slade Heathcott: 2-for-5, 2B (22), HR (8), RBI, 3 RS, BB - This is the potential that Heathcott possesses:  A mutli-faceted player who can change the game with defense, speed, and power.   His performance has improved as the season has gone along.
Gary Sanchez:  2-for-6, 2B (4) - Four of his six hits for Trenton have been doubles.   He has 25 doubles and 13 home runs in 382 AB overall.  Caught all 13 innings.
Ramon Flores:  1-for-5, SAC - 11-game hitting streak, as he slowly but surely is making this season into something that is not-so-bad.
Kyle Roller:  1-for-4, BB
Saxon Butler:  0-for-3, RBI, BB, SF
Casey Stevenson:  2-for-5

Graham Stoneburner:  2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K - It just amazes me to see Stoneburner with 30 strikeouts in 71.1 innings.    He is generating a good number of ground balls, but that's about all he has going for him.
Zach Nuding: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (4.08 ERA; 117 IP, 132 H, 60 R, 53 ER, 8 HR, 48 BB, 86 K) - Pretty much doing what you would expect him to do since moving to the bullpen.  I still don't know if it is a permanent move, or just something to control his innings.
Danny Burawa:  2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (2.84 ERA; 57 IP, 37 H, 22 R, 18 ER, 1 HR, 35 BB, 57 K) - Hasn't allowed an earned run (two unearned) in 11 appearances since Double-A ASB.  Burawa missed all of last year due to injury, but is seemingly back on track.
------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Daytona, 6-3)

Ben Gamel:  1-for-3, RBI, 2 BB, SB (21), CS (5), PO - Talk about a full night.  5-for-23 since coming off of the disabled list with five steals in six attempts.
Pete O'Brien: 0-for-4, BB, 2 K
Mason Williams:  0-for-4, SAC - 5-for-42 slide.
Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-4, BB - 12 walks in last 10 games.
Ali Castillo: 1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Mikeson Oliberto:  1-for-3, 2B (3), RS, BB - 11-for-29 since joining Tampa.  22-year old OF has actually been pretty good offensively in his brief professional career.

Rafael DePaula:  4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K (6.06 ERA; 35.2 IP, 38 H, 26 R, 24 ER, 2 HR, 22 BB, 40 K) - Has run into a bit of a brick wall since promotion.    His 100 IP total on the season is nearly 40 more than what he threw last year in his professional debut.
Pat Venditte:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Charley Short:  1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K - Has 76 strikeouts and 14 walks in 53.1 innings between Charleston/Tampa.
------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Rome, 8-5)

Greg Bird:  2-for-4, 2 2B (29), 2 RS - Has been a little bit off of his game recently, so this is a nice thing to see.
Reymond Nunez:  3-for-4, HR (12), 3 RBI, 2 RS - Pretty much written off as a prospect.  Hitting .252 with those 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 84 games.    Nunez was always about his immense power potential, but it just never materialized.   That said, still 22 years old so he has a small window to get himself into the picture.
Jake Cave:  1-for-5, 2 K - Will play in High-A as a 21-year old in 2014.
Ericson Leonora:  1-for-4, 2B (5), RBI, RS
Cito Culver:  1-for-4, 2 K - 11-for-39 in August.
Jackson Valera: 2-for-4, 2B (2) - 21-year old catcher hasn't done much hitting at this point.

Evan Rutckyj (L, 9-8):  5.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR (4.80 ERA; 110.2 IP, 120 H, 68 R, 59 ER, 53 BB, 99 K, 9 HR) - Threw 101 innings last year, so he is fine in that regard.  A ho-hum season overall for the 21-year old LHP.
-------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Lowell, 1-0)

Michael O'Neill:  1-for-4, 2B (13), RBI, 2 K - 13 doubles in 44 games is good - but those strikeouts must come down.
Eric Jagielo: 0-for-3, BB - The power hasn't shown up yet, but the plate discipline has.
Brandon Thomas:  1-for-2, 3B (1), BB, SB (7)
Bubba Jones:  1-for-3, RS - 9-for-28 in August after hitting .321/.419/.449 in 23 July games.

Dillon McNamara: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - 2.00 ERA in 27 innings with a 21/13 K/BB ratio.  First start of his professional career.
Sam Agnew-Wieland:  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - First career professional win (1-3).   Has a 24/11 K/BB ratio over 23.1 innings.
Stefan Lopez (S, 2):  3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K - 22-year old RHP was a 16th round pick in 2012.  Has a 32/7 K/BB ratio over 26.1 innings.
