Yankees Minor League Report 8/16/13: Greg Bird Continues to Impress in Charleston Victory

Scranton (Defeated Charlotte, 6-5)

Melky Mesa:  1-for-4, 2B (14), RBI, 3 K - He is hitting .264 despite having a 110/9 K/BB ratio.  If only he was a pitcher, we wouldn't have to worry about filling Mo's shoes.
David Adams:  0-for-5 - 0-for-12 in last three games.  With Mark Reynolds aboard, Adams will likely be nothing more than Cano's caddy in September.
Ronnier Mustelier:  1-for-2, 2B (15), RS, 2 BB
Bobby Wilson:  1-for-3, HR (6), 3 RBI, RS, BB - Best thing I can say about Wilson is that he, amazingly enough, hasn't been summoned to the big leagues once all season.   If they carry a third catcher in September, here is hoping it is Murphy.
Brendan Harris:  1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS
Addison Maruszak:  0-for-3, BB - 0-for-20 slide.  Eek.  I like Maruszak, because he can cover short and is a decent enough right-handed bat.

Brett Marshall (W, 7-9):  6.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HR (5.26 ERA; 126.2 IP, 135 H, 83 R, 74 ER, 17 HR, 66 BB, 106 K) - Marshall has thrown better as of late, though tonight was not one of those games.  I assumed he was out of the running for a start in the upcoming double-header, and starting tonight cements that.
Dellin Betances:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K (2.92 ERA; 74 IP, 48 H, 24 R, 24 ER, 2 HR, 41 BB, 92 K) - Amazing how when a pitcher gets called up and instantly gets hit around the ballpark how fast the "shine" comes off.   Betances showed me a few things in that game, though:  He can actually throw strikes and his fastball/breaking ball combination looks good.    We'll see how he does with the Cubs next year.
-------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to New Hampshire, 5-4, in 15 innings.  Position players were used to pitch the final four innings of the game)

Mason Williams:  1-for-8, RS, 2 K - These long games can really wreck havoc on the stats.
Gary Sanchez:  0-for-5, 2 BB - Many opportunities to extend his hitting streak, but it didn't happen.  First hitless game since joining Trenton.
Ramon Flores:  1-for-3, 2B (20), RS, 4 BB - You just never know when things will click for a prospect.   He is drawing his customary walks, and hitting much better.  Now 20-for-57 in August.
Ben Gamel:  3-for-7, 2B (1), RS - Nice Double-A debut.
Kyle Roller:  3-for-7, RBI, RS
Jose Pirela:  1-for-7, RBI
Carmen Angelini: 3-for-6, 3B (1), RBI
Francisco Arcia:  1-for-7, RBI

Diego Moreno:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K - Has a 1.35 ERA in 6.2 innings since joining Trenton with a 9/1 K/BB ratio.
Francisco Rondon:  3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K (4.26 ERA; 67.2 IP, 53 H, 43 R, 32 ER, 6 HR, 45 BB, 72 K) -  Last 27 IP:  13 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 16 BB, 40 K.
Danny Burawa:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K (2.70 ERA; 60 IP, 39 H, 22 R, 18 ER, 1 HR, 37 BB, 61 K) - Strikes out batters, generates ground balls.  The control has been a bit shaky this year, but he also did miss a full year of development time.  A 2014 bullpen candidate (though not likely out of spring training)
Casey Stevenson:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K - Yes, this is the Casey Stevenson who is also a utility player for Trenton.
Jose Gil:  1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K - Yes, this is the Jose Gil who is also a backup catcher.  He supposedly has a good arm, at least.
-------------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Lakeland, 7-1)

Cito Culver:  2-for-5, 2 RS - Has hit safely in all four games (6-for-16) since joining Tampa.
Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-3, RBI, BB - Hitting .278/.401/.399 in 363 AB with Tampa; .290/.408/.410 overall.   Has 72 walks and 75 strikeouts in 114 games this season.   On top of that, he is 22-for-27 stealing bases.   Welcome to Trenton, kid!
Taylor Dugas:  3-for-5, 3 RS - .268/.374/.304 in 138 AB for Tampa; .257/.380/.305 overall.
Pete O'Brien:  1-for-2, RBI, 2 BB, RS - 2 walks?  Neither intentional?  Are you kidding me?    Now has 82 runs batted in on the season.   Has also committed 14 errors since joining Tampa, most of which have been at third base.
Cody Grice:  2-for-4, 3 RBI - Has done everything the organization has asked of him this year.
Ali Castillo: 1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS, BB, SB (4)

Jairo Heredia (W, 2-1):  6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K (2.22 ERA; 24.1 IP, 23 H, 10 R, 6 ER, 3 HR, 9 BB, 28 K) - Someone to keep an eye on next year.
Taylor Garrison: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - Has a 1.82 ERA in 34 games between Charleston/Tampa with a 47/13 K/BB ratio.
--------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Rome, 8-4)

Greg Bird:  2-for-3, HR (18), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB - What more really needs to be written?  Hitting .284/.421/.509 in 401 AB with 74 RBI, 73 runs, 91 walks, and 115 strikeouts.   And he won't be 21 until the after the season is over.     He has a .966 OPS in August...despite hitting .239.
Jake Cave:  1-for-5, RBI, RS - .283/.345/.400.   He is also 20 years old, and will also not turn 21 until after the season.
Dante Bichette:  1-for-5, 2B (14), RS, 3 K - .208/.289/.321 in 380 at-bats.  Charleston supposedly is not an easy place to hit, and his splits do show that a bit:  .527 OPS at home; .685 on the road.
Reymond Nunez:  3-for-5, 2 2B (15), RBI, RS - .262 with 30 XBH and 55 RBI in 321 AB.   Not a bad season, but repeating the level after an atrocious .620 OPS campaign last year.
Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, RS, BB

Evan Rutckyj (W, 10-8):  5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K (4.75 ERA; 115.2 IP, 125 H, 70 R, 61 ER, 9 HR, 57 BB, 101 K) - Not going to claim he has been outstanding this year, but he is at least getting a full season's worth of innings under his belt.
Jose Campos (S, 2):  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (3.58 ERA; 83 IP, 81 H, 37 R, 33 ER, 5 HR, 16 BB, 71 K) - Overall, a nice season for Campos after his 2012 season was cut short due to injury.  Hopefully, in 2014, he will be allowed to go deeper into games.
--------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Tri-City, 4-1)

Eric Jagielo: 0-for-3, BB - .252/.371/.353 in 34 games since joining Staten Island.
Brandon Thomas:  0-for-4, 3 K, CS (4) - .208/.329/.337 with 67 K.   The ability to draw some walks is nice to see; needs to work on everything else, though.
Derek Toadvine:  2-for-4
Bubba Jones:  0-for-4, 3 K
Isaias Tejada:  1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS - Only hitting .195 in 123 AB.

Caleb Smith:  4 IP,1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K (2.21 ERA; 40.2 IP, 29 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 0 HR, 10 BB, 46 K) - Nice professional debut for 22-year old LHP.
