Yankees Minor League Report 8/15/13: Mason Williams' Double-A Debut (Sort of); Ramon Flores' Hitting Streak Snapped; Robert Refsnyder's Hot Month Continues

In case you missed it, Slade Heathcott has joined the ranks of the wounded and will be out for the remainder of the season.  You have to start wondering if injuries are going to derail his career.

Scranton (Defeated Charlotte, 4-0)

Melky Mesa: 2-for-4, HR (13), 2 RBI, RS, SB (9) - Here is the thing:  Even if the Yankees do have a miracle run in them (I still doubt it), there still is zero harm in using Mesa on the roster over Wells.  It may actually be an upgrade.  16-for-42 streak with four home runs and 14 runs batted in.
JR Murphy:  0-for-3, RS, BB - Snaps mini 5-game hitting streak.    Only 8-for-41 in August with six walks and five strikeouts.
Adonis Garcia:  1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS - 7-for-40 in last 10 games.
David Adams:  0-for-3, BB
Ronnier Mustelier:  1-for-4, 2B (14), RBI

Chase Whitley:  4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (3.42 ERA; 52.2 IP, 51 H, 20 R, 20 ER, 17 BB, 51 K) - With all of the injuries and shuffling going on, Whitley has made a few emergency starts (tonight and on August 8th).  The Yankees have stretched him out as a reliever, making it possible, but it is not his future.
Cesar Cabral:  0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - Has a 10/1 K/BB ratio over 6 innings since his promotion.
Yoshinori Tateyama:  2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (2.10 ERA; 30 IP, 28 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 31 K) - Pitched to a 4.50 ERA in 44 innings in 2011 for Texas.    Had a 9.00 ERA last year in 17 innings.  Most importantly, he has allowed 12 home runs in those 61 major league innings.  As a RHP, probably not an ideal Yankees' bullpen candidate.
-------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Harrisburg, 6-5)

Ramon Flores:  0-for-3, 2 BB - 14-game hitting streak snapped, but the two walks are nice.
Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4, RS, BB - 8-game hitting streak since joining Trenton (11-for-33).  Four of those hits have gone for doubles.
Mason Williams:  0-for-1, RS, K - Struck out to end the game after entering the game earlier as a pinch-runner.   In other words, just another overhyped prospect who may make it as the outfield version of Homer Bush.
Jose Pirela:  3-for-5, 2B (20), RS - His bat has been strong for a second baseman the past two seasons.   As I have said before, he isn't a big prospect and the Yankees abandoned the "super utility" idea, it appears.  But the bat has played well here.
Kyle Roller:  1-for-5, RS, 2 K
Carmen Angelini:  1-for-5, RBI - .201 since joining squad.
Casey Stevenson:  1-for-2, 2B (10), RS, BB, SAC - Sacrifice came in the 9th to put the tying run on second.  The binder told them to do it.

Shane Greene:  5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HR - Has now thrown 135 innings between Tampa/Trenton with a 119/25 K/BB ratio.  Not too shabby.    Tonight was not his best outing, but he has proven to the Yankees this year that he can possibly stay in a starting role.
Pat Venditte:  2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Zach Nuding:   2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K - 4.08 ERA for Trenton with a 90/49 K/BB ratio over 119 innings.  Fifth consecutive relief appearance after spending the rest of the season in the rotation.
--------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Brevard County, 5-3)

Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-3, RS, BB - When this guy gets hot, he gots HOT.  13 hits in last 34 AB and 16-for-44 in August.
Cito Culver:  1-for-4 - Has hit safely in all three of his Tampa games.   Committed second error.
Taylor Dugas:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB - With WIlliams and Gamel promoted to Trenton, Dugas has seemingly taken over center field.
Dan Fiorito:  2-for-4
Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, RBI, K - 81st RBI of the season.

Cesar Vargas (L, 0-1):  5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HR - High-A debut for Vargas.    Pitched to a 3.24 ERA in 22 starts for Charleston with a 83/35 K/BB ratio over 108.1 innings.  21-year old RHP is one to watch going forward.
Charley Short:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - All this guy does is generate outs.   Has now struck out 79 batters in 55.2 innings between Charleston/Tampa.  What I don't know is exactly how he is doing it - a trick pitch (ie, like Edwar Ramirez a few years back), or something else?  Scouting reports are hard to come by.
--------------------------------------
Charleston (Swept DH from Lexington, 1-0 and 8-4.  The 8-4 game was shortened by rain.  Charleston had only two hits in Game 1, but won regardless)

Greg Bird:  1-for-3, 2B (30), RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB - Only 9-for-43 in August, but has also drawn 14 walks and five of those nine hits have gone for extra bases.
Jake Cave:  2-for-7, 2B (31), 2 RS, SB (15) - Now hitting .284 in what has been a very promising season.
Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-7, 3B (3), RBI, RS, 2 K - As stated many times, he is one of the best athletes in the system (at least in the full season leagues) - he just needs to translate some of that into being a baseball player.
Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, 2B (13), RBI, 2 RS - .208/.290/.320 in 375 AB.  10 hits in last 34 AB.
Reymond Nunez:  2-for-4, 3 RBI - .256/.315/.434 in 316 AB with 54 runs batted in.
Ericson Leonora:  2-for-5, 2B (7), HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 RS - Of course, it helps when one of the two hits in Game 1 is a home run.   Hitting .350 since being promoted here.

Dan Camarena (W, 4-6):  5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K  (4.49 ERA; 102.1 IP, 96 H, 62 R, 51 ER, 10 HR, 16 BB, 74 K) - Overall, a solid season for the 20-year old LHP.   Has a 2.73 ERA in 10 starts since the ASB with a 38/3 K/BB ratio.    A bit of a touch-and-feel guy more than a pure power guy, he possesses some of the "pitchability" traits the organization looks for.  Intrigued to see what he does as he moves up the chain.
Luis Niebla (S, 1):  2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K (5.18 ERA; 66 IP, 87 H, 48 R, 38 ER, 8 HR, 17 BB, 54 K) - Has pitched in 15 games, 9 of which were starts.

Luis Severino:  5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, HR - The 19-year old RHP has a 4.08 ERA in 17.2 innings since his promotion.    He has an impressive 21/4 K/BB ratio.
----------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Aberdeen, 10-6)

Eric Jagielo:  2-for-3, 2 2B (9), 2 RBI, BB - At .259, he isn't setting any records at Staten Island, but he has taken some walks and is hitting a few doubles along the way.
Abiatal Avelino:  1-for-5, RS - First career hit for Staten Island.   The name is hard to type, but I will gladly do so if he can become a shortstop option in the future.
Brandon Thomas:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Bubba Jones:  2-for-5, RS - Hitting .295 in 156 AB for Staten Island.  Looks to be destined for Charleston at the age of 21 next season.
Michael O'Neill:  0-for-0, RS, HBP, SB (9) - Hit by a pitch, stole a base, scored a run, left the game.
Derek Toadvine:  0-for-2, RBI, 2 RS, 3 BB, SB (6)

David Palladino:  2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K (5.14 ERA; 35 IP, 46 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 21 BB, 36 K) - 6'8" RHP is the next Dellin Betances.
Dillon McNamara:  2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K (2.17 ERA; 29 IP, 20 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 13 BB, 23 K)
Nick Rumbelow:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K - 2.20 ERA in 16.1 innings.  Has allowed 10 runs, only four of which have been earned.  18/5 K/BB ratio.
