Yankees Minor League Report 8/8/13: Carmen Angelini Hits Game-Winning Grand Slam; Pete O'Brien Adds Another Home Run to his Total

Scranton: (Lost DH to Buffalo, 5-2 and 2-1)

JR Murphy:  1-for-3, 2B (15), RS - .268/.345/.411 with Scranton; .268/.349/.418, overall.    Despite a recent slump, he has done a solid job.    Hitting LHP much better than RHP in 2013, but that has not been his typical trend; in 2012, he was much better vs. RHP.
Melky Mesa: 2-for-7, 2 K
Randy Ruiz: 3-for-5, HR (15), RBI, RS, BB - There was a time when I thought it would be worth bringing him up to see if he can provide some right-handed punch, but that ship has sailed.
Adonis Garcia:  0-for-6
Dan Johnson: 0-for-5, RBI, BB
Ronnier Mustelier:  1-for-6, 3 K
Addison Maruszak:  0-for-3 - .262/.339/.396 in 260 AB.  Has some potential as a utility player with a bit of pop in his bat.
Corey Patterson: 2-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS

Chase Whitley:  3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K - Emergency start in the nightcap.  (3.59 ERA; 47.2 IP, 48 H, 19 R, 19 ER, 2 HR, 16 BB, 47 K).  Personally, I would try to get him & Betances on the major league roster soon - though Betances is more urgent, given his 2014 roster status (he won't have any more options)

-------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Erie, 5-1)

Carmen Angelini:  3-for-5, GS (4), 4 RBI, RS - Game-winning GS in top of 11th with two outs.  Angelini started the season strong, but is only hitting .200 (31-for-155) for Trenton.
Ramon Flores:  1-for-5 - 9-game hitting streak.  Let us not forget that Flores is still only 21 years old.
Gary Sanchez:  1-for-5, 2B (3) - Three doubles in four games since joining Trenton.
Slade Heathcott:  1-for-4, RS - 9-game hitting streak.  8 of those games are 1-hit affairs.
Kyle Roller:  1-for-4, RBI, BB
Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, RS, BB

Mikey O'Brien:  4.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 K (3.90 ERA; 83 IP, 77 H, 41 R, 36 ER, 6 HR, 39 BB, 63 K)
Francisco Rondon: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K (4.52 ERA; 63.2 IP, 53 H, 43 R, 32 ER, 6 HR, 41 BB, 64 K) - Intriguing option for the 2014 bullpen.
Tommy Kahnle:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (2.13 ERA; 50.2 IP, 25 H, 13 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 31 BB, 61 K) - As the numbers show, Kahnle is very tough to hit.    That has been his trend since the day he entered the organization.  The walks and strikeouts have also been a trend.   In 204.2 career innings, he has only allowed 129 hits with 108 walks and 272 strikeouts.
Danny Burawa (W, 5-3):  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K - Has a 2.95 ERA over 55 innings with 57/35 K/BB ratio.   Has allowed two runs over his last 16.1 innings.
-----------------------
Tampa (Lost to Brevard County, 5-4)

Pete O'Brien: 1-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, K - Four game hitting streak (6-for-15).  Four of those six hits have gone for extra bases.  Has an organization-leading 20 home runs (tied with Dan Johnson) combined between Chalreston/Tampa with 80 runs batted in.
Mason Williams: 1-for-5 - 4-for-28 in August after a solid June/July.
Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-3, 2B (24), RS, 2 BB - Seven walks in last four games.  10-for-35 in his last 10 games.
Ben Gamel:  0-for-2, RS, 2 BB - It will be intriguing to see what he does in Trenton.  He will be 21 years old at the start of the 2014 season.
Taylor Dugas:  2-for-4, RBI
Matt Snyder:  1-for-2, RS, 2 BB
Ali Castillo: 1-for-4, SB (3)

Scottie Allen (L, 8-5):  6 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K (3.57 ERA; 106 IP, 105 H, 47 R, 42 ER, 9 HR, 31 BB, 71 K) - Solid season for the fringy RHP.
--------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Rome, 7-3)

Greg Bird:  1-for-4, RS, 3 K - There isn't much to criticize here, but the biggest blemish is the 113 K in 106 games.  That's not extraordinary by today's standards, but he is in Low-A ball, not the majors.  But it is hard to get too worked up about that when you look at his overall season.   He has posted an OBP over .400 in every month this season.  He has slugged under .500 in only one full month (April).
Cito Culver:  1-for-3, RS - 13 hits in last 43 AB.
Jake Cave:  0-for-4, 3 K
Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 2 K - .248/.293/.410 in 161 AB since demotion; .231/.279/.356 overall.  Has the athletic ability to surge at any time, but it doesn't appear that 2013 will be that year.
Ericson Leonora:  2-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS - Hitting .359 (23-for-64) since promotion.  20-year old right-handed hitting OF hasn't really shown much at the plate prior to this mini-surge.

Luis Severino: 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K - 3.55 ERA with 12/4 K/BB ratio over 12.2 innings since his promotion.  This is valuable experience for the 19-year old RHP.   Throws in the mid-90s with a developing power slider.  He was a $225,000 signing out of Venezuela, which definitely is not a high-end price for a kid with his arm.   Time will tell, but it is always intriguing to watch a teenager attempt to conquer a full-season league.  Had a 1.37 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 26.1 innings for the GCL squad.
---------------------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated State College, 6-5)

Eric Jagielo: 2-for-3, 2 2B (7), 3 RBI - .272/.377/.369.  Starting to pick up the pace again after a bit of a rough stretch.
Brandon Thomas:  0-for-5, 4 K - .210/.333/.306.  As I have said previously, the ability to take a few walks is nice, but so far, Thomas & Michael O'Neill have not impressed as college hitters entering the organization.
Jose Rosario:  1-for-4, 2 RS, BB, SB (6) - As a shortstop, his leash will likely be a bit longer than if he couldn't play the position.  But he didn't hit in 2012, and hasn't hit in 2013.
Mike Ford:  2-for-4, HR (2), RBI, 2 RS - Signed as a free agent after the draft out of Princeton.  8-for-34.
Kale Sumner:  0-for-2, 2 BB, RS - .250/.365/.339 in 124 AB.  3-for-31 slide.
Trent Garrison:  2-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, RS - Always intriguing to have a left-handed catcher in the system; but major prospect, he is not.  Comes with a good defensive reputation.

David Palladino:  3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K (4.36 ERA; 33 IP, 40 H, 20 R, 16 ER, 3 HR, 18 BB, 34 K) - Big (6'8") RHP will probably need to iron out some wrinkles along the way.
Kelvin Castro:  2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR - 2.78 ERA with 32/7 K/BB ratio over 22.2 innings for converted IF.
Nick Rumbelow (S, 4):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - 2.08 ERA in 13 innings with 13/3 K/BB ratio.
