Yankees Minor League Report 8/17/13: Nik Turley Gets Crushed; Eric Jagielo Goes Yard

Scranton (Lost to Lehigh Valley, 4-3, in 11 innings)

Melky Mesa: 1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, SB (10) - Has reached double digits in HR and SB in 4 of his last 5 seasons.  (Hit 9 HR in the one season he didn't accomplish this feat)
JR Murphy:  1-for-6, 3 K - 8 hits in last 39 AB.
David Adams: 1-for-3, BB
Ronnier Mustelier:  2-for-4, 2B (16), BB - Though I feel bad for his unlucky 2013 season, bottom line is that he hasn't hit much anyway.

Graham Stoneburner:  4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Sam Demel: 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K - 1.64 ERA in 44 innings.  He has walked 18 and struck out 54.  Doesn't have the best major league track record, but they should probably try to keep him around for depth in 2014.
Cesar Cabral:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K - 13/2 K/BB ratio in 7 innings since joining Scranton.  Overall, he has a 40/19 ratio in 33.2 innings.
---------------------
Trenton (Lost to New Hampshire, 14-4)

Gary Sanchez:  1-for-3, RS - 12-for-41.  I believe he caught all 15 innings in last night's contest.
Mason Williams: 0-for-5, 3 K - 1-for-14 thus far.
Ramon Flores:  0-for-5, RBI - Finally got his OBP up to .350 last night, but it will dip below that again.
Jose Pirela: 3-for-4, 2B (21), RS - Hitting .268 in 399 AB for Trenton.   As stated previously, he wasn't very good in April or May, but has hit very well since. (.847 OPS in June; .818 in July; 19-for-59 in August)
Ben Gamel: 1-for-4
Kyle Roller:  0-for-2, K - Left game early.

Nik Turley (L, 9-7):  3 IP, 5 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 5 BB, 2 K (127 IP, 104 H, 64 R, 59 ER, 10 HR, 65 BB, 125 K) - The walks have really put a damper on his season.   Walks were a bit of a problem early in his career, but not much of one in 2011 or 2012.
Pat Venditte:  1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K - Allowed three inherited runners (all Turley's) to score.
Zach Nuding:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K - Tough night to be a pitcher for the Thunder.
Tommy Kahnle:  1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K - When Kahnle is giving up four hits in an outing, you know things just aren't going well.    Has a 2.44 ERA in 55.1 IP with only 33 hits allowed.  (68/35 K/BB ratio)
Jose Gil:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - Backup catcher has now worked back-to-back nights in relief.   Wouldn't it be nice if they allowed an actual reliever (Dellin Betances) to do that in Scranton?
-----------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Lakeland, 10-8.  This was the conclusion of a game started on July 4th, though it was suspended rather early on July 4th.  The second game scheduled for tonight was postponed due to darkness)

Pete O'Brien: 2-for-5, 2B (12), 3B (3), 3 RBI, RS - O'Brien now has 34 doubles, four triples, 20 home runs, and 85 runs batted in between Charleston/Tampa.
Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-2, 2 RS, 3 BB - Hitting .279/.406/.400 in 365 AB for Tampa with 69 walks and 63 strikeouts.
Taylor Dugas:  2-for-4, 2B, RBI, RS, BB
Ali Castillo: 1-for-4, RBI

Brandon Pinder:  4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
---------------
Charleston (Lost to Rome, 6-2)

Jake Cave:  1-for-3, BB, K
Greg Bird:  0-for-4, 3 K - Bird does strike out a bit...regardless, this is one of the few games this season where he contributed nothing offensively.
Ericson Leonora: 2-for-4, 2 2B (10), 2 RS - Hitting .348 (31-for-89) since promotion.
Reymond Nunez:  2-for-4, 2B (16), RBI - 12 RBI in 15 August games.  Not quite Alfonso Soriano territory...
Dante Bichette:  0-for-4, 3 K
Jose Rosario: 0-for-3, SB (4) - 8-for-69 for Charleston.
Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, K - 2-for-41 slide.  Eek.

Eric Wooten (L, 1-2):  5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K - Had allowed one run in 20 innings since joining Charleston before this game.  Has a 19/2 K/BB ratio.
Ty Webb:  2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K (4.22 ERA; 21.1 IP, 19 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 4 BB, 24 K)
-----------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Tri-City, 6-3)

Eric Jagielo:  1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS, 3 K - Always nice to see your top draft pick go yard.
Brandon Thomas:  1-for-3, 3B (2), RBI, RS, BB
Bubba Jones:  1-for-4 - Hit safely in 6 of last 7 games.
Yeicok Calderon: 2-for-3, 2B (10), RS, BB, CS (1) - Always intrigued by a left-handed bat with some power potential, but he failed in Charleston earlier this year (.590 OPS in 159 AB)
Abiatal Avelino:  1-for-4

Rookie Davis (L, 2-4):  2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K (2.37 ERA; 38 IP, 41 H, 18 R, 10 ER, 0 HR, 13 BB, 36 K)
Andy Beresford:  3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (1.61 ERA; 22.1 IP, 26 H, 10 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 15 K)
Stefan Lopez:  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K- 1.26 ERA with 34/7 K/BB ratio over 28.2 innings.
