Yankees Minor League Report 8/6/13: Slade Heathcott & Ramon Flores Extend Hitting Streaks; Greg Bird's Impressive Streak Snapped

Scranton (Lost to Syracuse, 3-2, after winning the conclusion of a suspended game earlier this year, 7-6)

In the suspended game, Mark Montgomery worked two innings, allowing no runs on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.  He lowered his ERA to 2.77 (39 IP, 34 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 3 HR, 24 BB, 47 K)

In the regular game:

Melky Mesa:  1-for-4, HR (10), 2 RBI, RS
Randy Ruiz:  3-for-4
JR Murphy:  0-for-4 - 8-for-40 slide.  You had to figure at some point that the amount of work he has been receiving may wear him down at the plate.
Ronnier Mustelier:  0-for-4

David Huff:  5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K - He most likely will be in the hunt for, at the very least, a bullpen slot in 2014.   Perhaps even a chance to become a cheap #5 starter if needed.
Sam Demel:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - 1.40 ERA with a 46/16 K/BB ratio over 38.2 innings.
Yoshinori Tateyama:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K - Normally speaking, I would say someone like Tateyama was acquired as a filler.   But the Yankees are so good at finding relief talent that it is possible they see more in this screw-balling right hander.
--------------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Erie, 3-2)

Gary Sanchez:  1-for-2, 2B (2), RBI, BB - Two doubles in two games since joining Trenton.
Slade Heathcott:  1-for-4, 3B (7), RBI, RS - 7-game hitting streak, though six of those games are 1-hit games.  Regardless, he's done a solid enough job in the second half to make you feel much better about his future.
Ramon Flores:  2-for-4, RS - 7-game hitting streak has raised his average to .249.  14 hits in last 42 AB (.333).    It would be nice to see him sprint to the finish line.
Jose Pirela:  1-for-4
Kyle Roller:  0-for-4, K
Saxon Butler:  0-for-3, K - Double-A debut.   Hit a pedestrian .254/.322/.378 in 209 AB for Tampa.

Nik Turley:  5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (117 IP, 94 H, 54 R, 49 ER, 10 HR, 59 BB, 117 K) - The walks are disappointing, but this has not been a lost cause season for Turley.  Done enough to get himself to Scranton to start off 2014.
Diego Moreno:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - 26-year old coming off of an injury in 2012 pitched to a 4.88 ERA for Tampa (though he was pitching very well as of late).  Acquired in AJ Burnett deal.
Danny Burawa:  0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K (3.06 ERA; 53 IP, 37 H, 22 R, 18 ER, 1 HR, 35 BB, 54 K) - Blew the save in the 9th with two unearned runs allowed.  Gary Sanchez was the only player on Trenton who committed an error.  You do the math.   Overrated bum is already costing the organization games in Double-A.
-----------------------
Charleston (Lost to Savannah, 1-0)

Jake Cave:  1-for-4 - 10-game hitting streak (14-for-37).  Hitting .283/.344/.406 overall in what has been a very strong season.  Has also been able to stick in center field all year.
Greg Bird:  0-for-4, K - So odd to see Bird have a game where he doesn't get on base at all.   To be exact, by my calculations, this snapped a 25-game streak where he had a walk or a hit.   Hitting .281/.413/.496 in 377 AB with 82 walks and 110 strikeouts.
Cito Culver:  1-for-4 - .230/.311/.347
Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4 - 8 hits in last 39 AB
Ty Afiner:  1-for-2 - Hitting .160 in 25 AB since promotion.

Brett Gerritse (L, 8-6):  6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K (3.69 ERA; 78 IP, 73 H, 37 R, 32 ER, 0 HR, 28 BB, 83 K) - Second year at the level - but pitched well here last year as well.  Not a big prospect, but someone to watch at the age of 22.   Does a good job keeping the ball in the ballpark, at least in the lower minors.
Derek Varnadore:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - 3.82 ERA in 37.2 innings with 32/13 K/BB ratio.  Drafted out of Auburn in 2012, where he was given the dreaded "Best pitcher on a terrible team" tag.
--------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to State College, 7-3)

Eric Jagielo:  1-for-4, K - 6 hits in last 34 AB.   Overall, he has done a pretty good job and has shown off his advanced hitting approach.
Kale Sumner:  0-for-3, RS, BB
Michael O'Neill:  0-for-4, BB, 3 K - Professional ball can be hard the first time around.  But a college hitter striking out at this rate is typically not a good sign.  (60 K in 169 AB)
Brandon Thomas:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K - Also striking out a lot, but drawing his fair share of walks. (.221/.345/.322; 23 walks/48 K in 149 AB)
Bubba Jones:  0-for-3, BB, K
Jose Rosario: 2-for-4, RS
Isaias Tejada:  1-for-4, RBI, RS
Derek Toadvine:  2-for-5, CS (6)

Conner Kendrick:  5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR - 3.95 ERA with 16/14 K/BB ratio over 27.1 innings.  Has allowed two earned runs over last 18 innings.
