Yankees Minor League Report 8/9/13: Melky Mesa Hits a Slam; Ramon Flores' Hitting Streak Hits Double Digits

Scranton (Defeated Buffalo, 7-3)

Melky Mesa:  3-for-5, GS (11), 5 RBI, RS - I am not necessarily a huge fan of Mesa's, by why not bring him up and release Vernon Wells?   12 hits in last 36 AB.
Dan Johnson:  3-for-4, 2 2B (22), RBI, RS
Adonis Garcia:  1-for-5, RS
Ronnier Mustelier:  0-for-4 - 15-for-91 since ASB.

Brett Marshall (W, 6-9):  6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K (5.18 ERA; 120 IP, 127 H, 78 R, 69 ER, 16 HR, 65 BB, 100 K) - Has thrown much better recently (though he didn't pitch well in his previous start).   He is on the 40-man, so I would expect a September call-up and he could be in a competition for a roster spot in 2014.
Cesar Cabral:  1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
----------------------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Akron, 5-4)

Ramon Flores:  2-for-4, RBI - 10-game hitting streak; 6 of those games are multi-hit contests.  Average is up to .253.
Slade Heathcott:  0-for-3, RS, BB, SB (15) - 9-game hitting streak snapped, but still was productive.    Hitting .259/.324/.401 in 394 AB.  7-for-7 SB since ASB.
Kyle Roller:  1-for-3, RS, BB
Carmen Angelini: 1-for-3, RS, BB, SB (7) - SB was a steal of home, and I assume it wasn't a straight steal.
Saxon Butler:  1-for-4, RBI - First career Double-A hit & RBI.
Jose Pirela:  0-for-4

Shane Greene (W, 6-3):  5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (3.11 ERA; 55 IP, 64 H, 26 R, 19 ER, 13 BB, 44 K) - Overall, Greene has been very good between Tampa/Trenton.  He has a 113/23 K/BB ratio over 130 innings.  The win was his 10th of the season between the two levels.
Diego Moreno: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
-------------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Brevard County, 8-2)

Ben Gamel:  1-for-4, 2B (28)
Mason Williams:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K - 7-for-43 slump
Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-2, BB, SAC - 8 walks in last 5 games.
Pete O'Brien: 0-for-4, 2 K - With the mashing comes the strikeouts:  110 in 96 games.
Taylor Dugas:  0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, SB (5) - Now has 50 walks and only 35 strikeouts in 91 games.  14-for-20 sb between Charleston/Tampa
Ali Castillo:  2-for-3

Bryan Mitchell:  6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K (4.75 ERA; 125 IP, 138 H, 77 R, 66 ER, 5 HR, 49 BB, 104 K)
Taylor Garrison:  2 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K - ERA for Tampa rises to 2.76.  He hasn't had many clunkers, but this definitely qualifies.
------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Rome, 5-0)

Jake Cave:  2-for-4, 2 K - Had two of Charleston's three hits.    Hitting .281/.345/.401 in 377 AB.
Greg Bird:  0-for-3 - 6 hits in last 32 AB.
Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 2 K
Cito Culver:  0-for-3
Wes Wilson:  1-for-3 - Organizational catcher.

Cesar Vargas (L, 4-5):  5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K (3.24 ERA; 108.1 IP, 86 H, 48 R, 39 ER, 6 HR, 36 BB, 83 K) - Solid season for the 21-year old RHP.   Should easily find himself in Tampa for 2014.
----------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Lowell, 5-4)

Brandon Thomas: 2-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS -  Was in a 3-for-31 freefall prior to tonight, so much needed.
Eric Jagielo: 0-for-3, RBI, BB, 2 K - .264/.373/.358.  I think he has done reasonably well.
Michael O'Neill: 2-for-4, RBI, RS, 2 K - .249/.302/.328 with 63 K in 43 games.
Bubba Jones:  1-for-3, 2B (13), RS
Jose Rosario: 1-for-3, 2B (6)

Caleb Smith:  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K (2.45 ERA; 36.2 IP, 27 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 44 K) - Impressive debut for the 22-year old LHP.   He will get to Charleston in 2014.
Philip Walby:  2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K (3.81 ERA; 26 IP, 18 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 23 BB, 26 K) - 21-year old drafted in the 12th round out of San Diego State.
