Yankees Minor League Report 8/14/13: Ramon Flores Streak Reaches 14; Gary Sanchez Collects 3 Hits; Abiatal Avelino Makes Staten Island Debut

Scranton (Lost to Charlotte, 4-2)

Melky Mesa:  2-for-5
JR Murphy:  1-for-5 - .278 with a 5-game hitting streak.
David Adams:  0-for-4, 3 K
Ronnier Mustelier:  1-for-2, 2 BB
Alberto Gonzalez:  1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS - Because I am contractually obligated to mention all home runs...
Dan Johnson:  2-for-4, RBI, BB -  Hitting .248 with 81 walks and 20 HR in 120 games.
Adonis Garcia:  1-for-5, RS

Chris Bootcheck:  7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K - One of his claims to fame will likely be the player least likely to be remembered as someone who played for the 2013 Yankees.  And that is quite an accomplishment given some of the players who have passed through town.
Matt Daley:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - 1.61 ERA since joining Scranton with a 35/6 K/BB ratio over 28 innings.   Missed 2012 due to a shoulder injury, and is 31 years old with some major league experience.
--------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Harrisburg, 4-3)

Ramon Flores:  2-for-4, BB - Hitting streak has reached 14.   Has raised his average to .258.  19-for-51 in the month of August.
Gary Sanchez:  3-for-4, RBI - Nothing but an overhyped singles hitter.   Has hit safely in all 7 games for Trenton (10-for-29)
Jose Pirela:  2-for-5, HR (9), RBI, 2 RS - As stated before, in 2012, the Yankees moved Pirela around the field a bit - this year, he has stayed anchored to second base.  If he would have been able to stick to his original position (SS), we'd be talking more about him.
Kyle Roller:  1-for-4
Carmen Angelini:  1-for-4, RBI
Cody Grice:  2-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS - 16-for-84 since joining Trenton.  Has been used as the organizational "fill in" guy this year, playing for Tampa, Trenton, and even Scranton.

Mikey O'Brien:  5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K  (115.1 IP, 117 H, 60 R, 51 ER, 6 HR, 48 BB, 103 K) - O'Brien has done a solid job for this organization since being drafted in the 9th round in 2008.  He is 23 years old, smallish (5'11") and is Type 1 diabetic.
Danny Burawa:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (2.75 ERA; 59 IP, 39 H, 22 R, 18 ER, 1 HR, 36 BB, 60 K) - Surging right now at this level.  Someone to watch for a 2014 callup to the big leagues.
Tommy Kahnle (S, 15):  1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (2.17 ERA; 54 IP, 29 H, 14 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 34 BB, 66 K) - I am not a big fan of walks - but you have to wonder if his unpredictable nature on the mound is what makes him effective.  Judging by his career, it isn't easy to hit the ball off this guy.
---------------------
Tampa:  (Lost to Brevard County, 8-3)

Pete O'Brien:  1-for-3, 2B (11), RS, BB - 33 doubles, 3 triples, 20 HR, and 80 RBI in 100 games for Charleston/Tampa.  118 strikeouts/34 walks.
Ben Gamel:  2-for-4
Cito Culver:  1-for-3, RS, BB - Hitting .429 since promotion!
Mason Williams:  0-for-4 - 8-for-44 in last 10 games.
Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-3, HBP - 14-for-41 in August with nine walks.
Matt Snyder:  1-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, RS - Second straight game with HR.  Strong year for Staten Island in 2012.  Only 92 AB this year.
Taylor Dugas:  1-for-4

Bryan Mitchell:  1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 0 K (5.12 ERA; 126.2 IP, 144 H, 83 R, 72 ER, 5 HR, 53 BB, 104 K) - Mitchell was on the list of players people thought may break out this season.  It hasn't materialized.  He features a fastball/curve combination that is supposedly wicked, but the results have not been there.  Very disappointing. (It should always be noted that sometimes w do not know what a pitcher is being asked to do in the minors.  It is possible Mitchell is concentrating on getting a solid third pitch on his resume.   But even if true, I still wouldn't expect numbers like what we see above)
Taylor Garrison:  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - 7th round pick in the 2012 draft has done quite well for himself.  We'll see if he can conquer Double-A in 2014.  Just another right-handed relief prospect to add to the list.
---------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Aberdeen, 5-4)

Brandon Thomas:  1-for-4, HR (5), RBI, RS, 3 K - .216/.333/.351 in 171 AB. 62 strikeouts.  7-for-10 stealing bases.
Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-4, K - Staten Island debut.    Hit .331/.415/.468 (23-for-27 sb) in 124 AB for the GCL squads.    Hit .302/.398/.374 in 222 AB in the DSL last year.  18-year old shortstop.   This kid has potential, but I will reserve judgement until he gets to a full-season league. (Staten Island is a decent step up for now)
Yeicok Calderon:  1-for-3, 2B (9), RS, BB
Kale Sumner:  1-for-2, RBI, RS - .254/.368/.341.  Got off to a hot start before slowing down.  Maintaing a good OBP.
Derek Toadvine:  2-for-4, RBI - .244/.313/.287 in 164 AB.
Daniel Lopez:  2-for-4, 3B (1), RS

Giovanny Gallegos:  4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2 HR (3.99 ERA; 49.2 IP, 49 H, 23 R, 23 ER, 7 BB, 34 K)
Cale Coshow:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - 4.11 ERA in 30.2 innings with a 28/16 K/BB ratio.
