Yankees Minor League Report 5/1/14: Ramon Flores is Scorching; Aaron Judge Collects Three More Hits

Scranton (Defeated Norfolk, 4-3)

OF Ramon Flores:  2-for-4, 2B (9), 3 RS, BB, K
All the way up to .290 with plenty of walks (17 in 24 games) and extra-base power.   If this isn't a small-sample size fluke, Flores may be positioning himself as an interesting prospect again.  7 2-hit games in last 8 contests.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  2-for-4, 2B (4), RS, SB (3)
Has a double in his last three games, to go along with his three home runs in his last six games.  Almonte doesn't have elite plate discipline, so power is key to his future.
IF Scott Sizemore:  2-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
Hitting .321 despite his 26 strikeouts in 53 AB.  Simply not sustainable.
IF Zelous Wheeler:  1-for-3, BB
C Austin Romine:  1-for-4
Was in 0-for-20 funk entering game.  Hitting a "modest" .122.  Perhaps Chris Stewart truly did teach him everything he knows?
SS Dean Anna:  1-for-5
1B/3B Russ Canzler: 0-for-5, RBI, 3 K

RHP Caleb Cotham:  2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
5.40 ERA in 18.1 IP with 25 hits allowed, seven walks, and 17 strikeouts.
RHP Diego Moreno:   2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Has struck out 15 in 11.1 IP this season.   Given the Yankees track record with discovering relief talent, don't be surprised if he actually becomes more than just your average filler.
RHP Robert Coello: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
LHP Cesar Cabral:  0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Mark Montgomery (W, 1-0):  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

4.45 ERA in 30.1 IP with 29 hits allowed, eight walks, and 23 strikeouts.    Has done well vs. left-handed batters; not so well vs. right-handed batters.
RHP Branden Pinder (S, 3):  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Continues to bounce back from last year's dreadful start at this level.
-----------------------
Charleston (Split 2 with Augusta; losing 6-2 before winning 2-0)

OF Aaron Judge:  3-for-8
2B/SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-8, K, 2 E (5)
Both errors throwing.  As I have stated before, errors at this level are not extremely important - but if there is a pattern to them, that can be concerning.
SS Abiatal Avelino: 1-for-3, K, CS (4)
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-5, BB, K
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-4, RS, BB, SAC, SB (5)

RHP Rookie Davis (L, 2-2):  4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 0 HR

RHP Jaron Long: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Emergency start.  3.54 ERA in 20.1 IP with 26 hits allowed, four walks, and 18 strikeouts.
RHP Philip Walby (W, 1-1):  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
1.74 ERA in 10.1 IP with two hits allowed, two walks, and 16 strikeouts.  21-year old was 12th round pick in last year's draft.
RHP Nick Rumbelow (S, 4):  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
