Yankees Minor League Report 5/12/14: Greg Bird Collects 3 Hits in Tampa Loss

Scranton (Lost to Durham, 2-1)

C Austin Romine:  1-for-4, RS, 3 K
.214/.276/.300 in 70 AB; 11-for-33 in May.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, 2B (8)
.273/.324/.470 in 132 AB
IF Scott Sizemore:  2-for-4, RBI
.288/.341/.375 in 80 AB; hits in six of last seven games
OF Ramon Flores:  0-for-4
.254/.364/.421 in 126 AB: 7-for-40 slide
UTIL Dean Anna:  0-for-3, BB
9-for-50 since demotion.
OF Antoan Richardson:  1-for-3, BB, 2 K, SB (10)
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  1-for-4, 2B (8)

RHP Chase Whitley:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Scratched from Sunday's start; threw one inning today.  This was likely a tuneup for when he likely gets promoted to the big league roster this week.  (Edit:  With Aceves working in relief on Monday night, I don't know what that means for Whitley).   2.39 ERA in 26.1 IP with 32/7 K/BB ratio.
RHP Brian Gordon (L, 2-3):  6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
4.06 ERA; 44.1 IP, 49 H, 23 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 18 BB, 31 K
RHP Brett Gerritse:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Triple-A debut for 23-year old.  2-2 with a 5.40 ERA in 28.1 innings for Tampa.   I assume he was called up to Scranton when the Yankees promoted Matt Daley to take CC's place on the big league roster.    Threw very well last year (8-7, 3.56 ERA in 101 IP with 108/31 K/BB ratio)

Tampa (Lost to St. Lucie, 3-2)

1B Greg Bird:  3-for-4, 2 2B (3)
Looks like Bird is picking up right where he left off last year.
3B Eric Jagielo: 1-for-4, 2B (7), 2 RBI
Hitting .244 with seven doubles, seven home runs, 21 runs batted in, 14 walks, and 32 strikeouts in 127 AB.  Is it a great start?  No.  But he is taking some walks and hitting for power.
CF Jake Cave:  0-for-4, RS, K
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-3, BB, K
Has fallen below .300 (.297).  Has 20 walks (25 K) in 35 games.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, RS, K
Hitting .205 in 127 AB.   Pretty much doing absolutely nothing at the plate.   It is too bad because the defense is so highly rated that he could get away with being below average at the plate.  At this point, he isn't even that.
UTIL Anderson Feliz:  0-for-4, 3 K
22-year old is 0-for-11 since coming off of the disabled list.

LHP Conner Kendrick:  6 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
21-year old pitched poorly in first start (4 R in 3.2 IP), so this is a nice change of pace.  Kendrick may profile more as a reliever than a starter long term.  He hits the low 90s with his fastball and has a good curve.
LHP Dietrich Enns:  1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
1.86 ERA; 19.1 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 9 BB, 18 K
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Tampa debut after a dominating tenure with Charleston:  9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 18 K
--------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Savannah, 1-0)

OF Aaron Judge: 1-for-3, 2 BB, K
Hitting .303 with 23 walks and 27 strikeouts in 34 games.
3B Miguel Andujar:  2-for-4
2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-for-4, 2 K
.194 with 41 K in 29 games.
OF Michael O'Neill: 0-for-4, RBI, BB, 3 K
Well, at least he drove in the winning run.  .236 with 48 K in 123 AB.
2B/SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-4, BB, K
1B Mike Ford:  0-for-4, BB, K
CF Brandon Thomas:  0-for-3, 2 K
Left game after getting HBP.    Only hitting .169 (11-for-65).  The 23-year old was considered a bit of a sleeper when drafted last year out of Georgia Tech, but only had a .655 OPS in 66 games for Staten Island.

RHP Jaron Long:  7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Kevin's son (and non drafted FA signing) has pitched very well.   2.59 ERA in 31.1 IP with 35 hits allowed, five walks, and 25 strikeouts.
LHP Rony Bautista:  2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2014 debut for Bautista, a raw 6'7" prospect who needs to start taking some strides (he is now 22 years old).    Pitched to a 2.21 ERA in 40.2 IP last season with a 51/23 K/BB ratio.
RHP Chris Smith (W, 1-0): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Signed in January, 2013 out of the Frontier League, Smith didn't pitch at all last year.   25-year old posted a 2.92 ERA in 2012 in the Frontier League.  I like following stories like these, but he isn't likely to sniff the majors.
