Yankees Minor League Report 5/16/14: Tampa Wins 18-Inning Game; Brady Lail Strikes Out 11 in Charleston Victory

Scranton (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 5-3)

SS Dean Anna:  2-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, E (6)
Again, errors don't always tell the full story - but Anna's game is built primarily around defense, and has six errors in 17 games.
OF Adonis Garcia: 2-for-5, 2 2B (7), RBI, RS, K
Has really been hitting well this year, and has the added bonus of being 6-for-6 stealing bases.
1B/OF Ramon Flores:  1-for-5, 2B (11), K
IF Scott Sizemore: 1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K, E (4)
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-3, 2B (1), 2 BB
His power has been on display all season - but I just want to point out that, in the end, Roller is not a special prospect.   He has done enough to get himself on the radar, though.
2B Jose Pirela:  2-for-5, RS
CF Antoan Richardson:  2-for-4, RBI
The 30-year old has put together a nice minor league career, with only four major league AB to his name.  That is where scouting comes into play, as the numbers indicate he should perhaps be on a major league roster.  He walks a lot, can play center field, steals a lot of bases (39 last year; 10-for-10 this year), etc.   He is small (5'8"), which probably did not help his cause.

LHP Matt Tracy:  5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Second career start at AAA level (made one in 2012).   The 24-year old hasn't had a whole lot of success the past two seasons, but is still considered at least a fringe prospect.  The K/BB ratios are simply not very strong, however (60/37 last season; 24/23 this year)
RHP Diego Moreno (W, 1-0);  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Robert Coello:  1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
0.60 ERA; 15 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 18 K
-------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Portland, 2-0)
CF Slade Heathcott:  2-for-3, 2 2B (2), K
His assignment in Trenton is not likely to last long.
C Gary Sanchez: 0-for-4
8-for-54 in May (ouch)
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-3, BB, K
.261/.387/.409 in 115 AB
OF Ben Gamel:  0-for-4, K
.285/.324/.372 in 172 AB
OF Taylor Dugas:  0-for-4
.303/.415/.465 in 99 AB.  Dugas has really put himself firmly on the map for a future major league job.
1B/OF Tyler Austin: 0-for-4, 2 K
.234/.310/.299 in 77 AB.  Will you please start freakin hitting already?

RHP Caleb Cotham (L, 0-1):  4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 0 K
RHP Jairo Heredia:  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
2.78 ERA; 22.2 IP, 20 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 25 K
8.1 scoreless innings in last three appearances with 14/2 K/BB ratio.   Early reports seemed to indicate that Heredia didn't look good - something has happened between then and now.
Switch Pat Venditte:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
0.82 ERA: 22 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 HR, 5 BB, 30 K

Tampa (Defeated Palm Beach in a LONGGGGGG 18 inning affair)

CF Jake Cave:  2-for-7, 2B (8), RS, BB, K, SB (6)
.314/.359/.432
3B Dante Bichette:  2-for-8, RBI, BB, K
.286/.384/.436
1B Greg Bird: 1-for-7, 2B (4), 2 BB, 2 K
12-for-33 with six XBH, six walks, and six strikeouts.
3B Eric Jagielo: 1-for-5, RBI, RS, BB, 3 K
Pulled in rare minor league double-switch
2B Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-8, 2B (7), 2 RBI, 4 K
.236/.266/.318; six walks, 39 strikeouts
UTIL Anderson Feliz:  3-for-7, BB, K, CS (1)
5-for-27 with a walk and ten strikeouts
RF Zach Wilson: 1-for-6, 2B (5), 2 RBI, 3 K
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-8, RBI, 2 RS, BB, 3 K, SB (2)

RHP Nick Goody:  1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
Just keep remembering that Goody is still essentially on a rehab stint following his TJ surgery. All four of his appearances have been short-lived starts (he is a relief pitcher).
LHP Miguel Sulbaran:  4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
6.28 ERA; 14.1 IP, 14 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 5 BB, 8 K
LHP Dietrich Enns:  2 IP,2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.69 ERA; 21.1 IP, 15 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 20 K
LHP James Pezos:   2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
23-year old has been pitching very well as of late and could get consideration for Trenton at some point.
RHP Phil Wetherell:  2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Kyle Haynes: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
C/RHP Wes Wilson (W, 1-0):  4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
The 24-year old is one of those "organizational catchers" who the Yankees just plug in wherever they need him to go.    Tonight, they needed him to pitch four innings.  Not only did he do that, he actually pitched extremely well.     Palm Beach also used a position player for the last several innings.
------------------------------------------
Charleston (Split DH with Hickory, winning 4-2 before losing 3-0)

SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-4, 4 K
.268/.338/.341 in 138 AB with 15 walks and 40 strikeouts.
CF Brandon Thomas:  1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, RS, K
3B/OF Jose Rosario:  3-for-6, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, CS (2), K
Rosario has rarely hit in the minors; and I doubt he is really turning the corner now.
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-3, 3 BB
.298/.415/.412 in 131 AB
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-6, 2 K
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-2, RS, K, SB (10)
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-5, RS, 3 K
OF Michael O'Neill:  0-for-5, RBI, BB, 2 K
1B Mike Ford:  1-for-4, 2 BB, K

RHP Brady Lail (W, 6-1):  6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 11 K
3.30 ERA; 43.2 IP, 46 H, 20 R, 16 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 44 K.
The 20-year old has struck out 20 batters in 12 innings in his last two starts.  18th round pick out of high school in 2012 has been consistently good in his brief career, displaying a strong K/BB rate at every stop (His career mark is 120/16, believe it or not).    Definitely someone to watch as he makes his way up the chain.
RHP Chris Smith (S, 1):  1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

LHP Caleb Smith (L, 3-3):  6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
0.70 ERA; 38.1 IP, 20 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 16 BB, 44 K.
Nice comeback after an erratic start last time out (11 baserunners in five innings).    Overall, he has obviously been dynamite.
RHP Jordan Cote: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
