Yankees Minor League Report 5/13/14: Dante Bichette and Eric Jagielo Both Hit Two HR; Ian Clarkin Impresses in Debut

Scranton (Crushed by Norfolk, 14-6)

OF Adonis Garcia:  3-for-4, 3B (1), 3 RBI, 2 RS, SB (4)
29-year old Cuban OF is not likely to make any impact in the organization.
OF Ramon Flores:  1-for-5
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  2-for-4, 2B (7), RBI, RS
In this day and age of an unsettled infield, guys like Wheeler may actually see some light at the end of the tunnel.  Remember that time, not long ago, when being an infielder in this system was a death sentence?  The entire major league infield was not just filled with All-Stars, but it was filled with durable All-Stars.  Guys who never took days off, etc.
UTIL Ronnier Mustelier:  1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
I still list him as "utility", but he is basically relegated to DH and LF duties right now.
C Francisco Arcia:  1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
10-for-32 since joining Scranton to be Romine's backup.  He is a left-handed bat, but doesn't have ideal size for a catcher and not much power, either.
2B Scott Sizemore:  0-for-5, RS, 2 K
SS Dean Anna:  1-for-3, BB, K
1B Russ Canzler:  0-for-4, 2 RS, K
The interesting thing is that there is a lot of junk in Scranton right now - and yet, I am reporting on so many players...

RHP Zach Nuding (L, 0-1):  3 IP, 11 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
First Triple-A start this season not pleasant (He started here once last year as well).  Was throwing well in Trenton (2.43 ERA in 29.2 IP).
RHP Mark Montgomery:  2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
1.93 ERA in 14 IP with seven hits allowed, seven walks, and 16 strikeouts.
LHP Cesar Cabral:  1.2 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
Cabral seems to have his share of control lapses.  I can spin that into "Sometimes it is good to be unpredictable on the mound", but you would see right through it.

Trenton (Defeated Richmond, 6-4, to improve to 19-10)

OF Ben Gamel: 3-for-5, RBI, RS
1B Kyle Roller:  2-for-2, 3 RBI, RS, BB
Up to .419 in 62 AB with 21 runs batted in.  My goodness.
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-4, 2 K
2B Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-4, 3B (1), RBI, RS, K
Although the average is still at a mediocre .255, he has cut down his K rate considerably since the beginning of the season.   He turned the corner for a while, and has now stalled a bit.
3B Rob Segedin: 1-for-4, K
His 10th K of the season..he has walked 16 times.
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-3, RS, 2 BB
The two walks are nice to see, but he is all the way down to .209.
OF Taylor Dugas:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K, SB (4)
SS Brendan Ryan:  2-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K, E
He is a Double-A hitting prodigy.

RHP Jairo Heredia:   3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Started tonight.  4.40 ERA in 14.1 IP with 15 hits allowed, four walks, and 11 strikeouts.
RHP Taylor Garrison:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
In a system filled with strong relief pitching, a guy like Garrison can get overlooked; of course, his walk tendencies this year are not going to help his cause (eight in 11.2 innings).  Hasn't been a huge problem for him in the past, though.
RHP Branden Pinder (S, 4):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Pinder was given up for dead last season, as his bread-and-butter out pitch (slider) completely abandoned him.  This year?  14 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 15 K.   Before 2013, he was a legit relief prospect - and it seems as if he wants to be again.

Tampa (Split with Brevard County, losing 7-4 before winning 6-2)

3B Dante Bichette:  3-for-8, 2B (8), 2 HR (3), 2 RBI, 3 RS, K
Hitting .326 with 18 walks and 19 strikeouts over 92 AB.
3B Eric Jagielo:  2-for-8, 2 HR (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS, K
Hitting .240 with 13 walks and 25 strikeouts over 100 AB.   Not hitting exceptionally well, but not stinking up the joint either.
C/RF Pete O'Brien:  2-for-7, 2B (9), HR (9), RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
19 of his 32 hits have gone for extra bases.
CF Jake Cave:  2-for-8, 2B (7), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Bread and butter remains his gap power (7 doubles and 3 triples).    Home runs are not there (yet), and a little extra plate discipline would be nice.   All in all, tough to be disappointed with his progress.
SS Cito Culver:  2-for-8, K, CS (1)
2B Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-7, RS, K, SB (5)

LHP Eric Wooten (L, 2-2):  3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
2.97 ERA in 30.1 IP with 35 hits allowed, no home runs, seven walks, and 20 strikeouts
RHP Rafael DePaula:  3 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 4 K
A bit wild there, Rafael?  3.62 ERA in 27.1 IP with 20 hits allowed, 16 walks, and 37 strikeouts.
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
9 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 10 K

LHP Dan Camarena:  5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
3.34 ERA in 29.2 innings with 35 hits allowed, 12 walks, and 24 strikeouts.
RHP Zach Woods (W, 1-1); 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
LHP James Pezos:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
5.84 ERA in 12.1 IP with 14 hits allowed, four walks, and 14 strikeouts.

Charleston (Defeated Delmarva, 6-5)

3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
The 19-year old hit four HR in 133 AB in the GCL last season.
SS Abiatal Avelino:  2-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS, 2 SB (11)
Hitting .287 in 94 AB.   For a 19-year old at this level, he is holding his own very well.
OF Michael O'Neill:  3-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, K, 2 SB (12)
Even when he has a big night, he can't avoid the strikeout.    The 12-for-14 steal rate is a nice surprise, however, after a 9-for-16 showing last year.
SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-4, 2 K
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-4, K
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-2, RS, BB
1B Mike Ford:  3-for-4, RBI, 2 RS
Again, not a huge prospect - non-drafted FA out of Princeton - but he is doing a fantastic job here.

LHP Ian Clarkin (W, 1-0):  5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
First "real" professional start (He "started" three times for the GCL squad last year, and lasted a total of five "get your feet wet" innings).   The 19-year old was drafted along with Aaron Judge and Eric Jagielo in the first round of last year's draft and has immense upside - but that, of course, is all it is right now.   42 of his 61 pitches tonight went for strikes.
LHP Omar Luis:  2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
The 21-year old bonus baby out of Cuba struggled in the GCL last season (5.68 ERA in 31.2 IP with 43/29 K/BB ratio).  A quirk in his contract left him exposed in the Rule 5 this past winter, but he obviously was not chosen.  If he starts to show some progress, however, the chances of getting selected in the future do go up (obviously).
RHP Stefan Lopez (S, 1):  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The 22-year old 16th rounder from 2012 pitched well in his second taste of Staten Island last year (1.09 ERA in 33 IP with 40/7 K/BB ratio).   Has a 2.00 ERA this year with 9/3 K/BB ratio over nine innings.
