Yankees Minor League Report 5/6/14: Chase Whitley Throws a Gem in Scranton Win; Nick Goody Makes 2014 Debut; Ronnier Mustelier Given the Ax

The Yankees have released Ronnier Mustelier.  Seemingly on the verge of making the 2013 roster, Mustelier suffered a knee injury late in camp and didn't return until later in the season.  After a not-so-good season in Scranton, he didn't even earn a spring training invite heading into 2014.  Overall, the 29-year old compiled a .306/.356/.456 line in 253 career minor league games for the Yankees, but was always older than his league.

Scranton
(Defeated Indianapolis, 2-1)

OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, K
.284/.322/.505 in 27 games.
IF Scott Sizemore:  1-for-4, RS, 2 K
.282/.342/.380 with 33 K in 71 AB.   The numbers are starting to dip, which makes sense - you cannot maintain a healthy stat line when you are striking out this often.
OF Ramon Flores:  1-for-4, K
.282/.390/.466 in 103 AB
SS Dean Anna:  0-for-4
C Austin Romine:  0-for-3, K, PB (4)
.145/.217/.236 in 55 AB
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  1-for-3, RBI, K
OF Adonis Garcia:  2-for-3, RS, BB, K
.283/.320/.370 in 92 AB

RHP Chase Whitley (W, 3-2):  6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K
Absolutely brilliant performance for Whitley, who continues to impress in whatever role the Yankees hand to him.  The 24-year old change up specialist now sports a 2.49 ERA with a 32/7 K/BB ratio over 25.1 innings.   Whitley was a 15th round pick out of Troy University back in 2010.  He has pretty much never had a bad season as he has moved up to the chain.   He was primarily a reliever until late last season.    I was a bit surprised when nobody chose him in the Rule 5, because he is the type of safe pick that teams make all the time.
RHP Mark Montgomery:  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
1.76 ERA in 15.1 IP with 17/8 K/BB ratio.    The walks are a bit high (though he has never been a control specialist).
RHP Robert Coello (S, 1):  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
10.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 10 K.
----------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to New Britain, 6-0)

3B Rob Segedin:  2-for-4, 2B (2)
.280/.400/.451 in 82 AB with 16 walks and 11 strikeouts.   Segedin seems to be over his injuries - for now.
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-4
.273/.357/.465.  With two moon shots to center field earlier this week, you may have been lead to believe that Sanchez is hot.     But he really isn't.  Those two bombs plus a single are the only hits he has in his last 23 AB.
2B Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-4
.245/.310/.377.  The extreme K rate from earlier in the season is gone; but the bat is still slumping.
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-4
Ho hum.
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-4, 2 K
OF Ben Gamel: 0-for-3, BB, 3 K
.285/.333/.338 in 130 AB with nine walks and 23 strikeouts.
SS Carmen Angelini:  2-for-2, BB
.247/.276/.301 in 73 AB

LHP Matt Tracy (L, 3-2):  3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
Unsightly 5.96 ERA in 28.2 IP with 21/19 K/BB ratio.
RHP Manny Barreda:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Taylor Garrison:  3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.07 ERA in 14.2 IP with seven hits allowed, eight walks, and seven strikeouts.
LHP Aaron Dott:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
---------------------------------------------
Tampa (Destroyed by Dunedin, 10-2.  Dunedin is now 23-8 while Tampa is 15-16)

3B Eric Jagielo:  2-for-4, 2B (5), RBI
.248/.331/.451 in 113 AB.  This is a pretty good start for Jageilo, playing in a league that favors pitching over offense.
3B Dante Bichette:  0-for-4, RBI
.311/.419/.485 in 103 AB.  7-game hitting streak snapped.
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-4, RS
.305/.336/.430 in 128 AB.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-3, RS, BB, K
.214/.268/.259
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4

RHP Nick Goody:   1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2014 debut for Goody, Goody was impressive in 2012, posting a 1.13 ERA in 32 IP with a 52/9 K/BB ratio after being drafted out of LSU that season.  He only pitched in two games last year before succumbing to Tommy John surgery.   He is now fully rehabbed and ready to go - if he can get back to his 2012 form, he will rise quickly.    He is a fastball-slider reliever with a deceptive delivery - his fastball can touch 93-94 or so.
RHP Brett Gerritse (L, 2-2):  5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HR
5.40 ERA in 28.1 IP with 17/9 K/BB ratio.
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Isn't it a crime that a pitcher's ERA drops after a fiasco like this?
LHP James Pezos:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
