Yankees Minor League Report 5/14/14: Pete O'Brien Hits Another; Jake Cave Has Huge Night; Latest from Manny Banuelos & Ian Clarkin

Scranton (Lost to Lehigh Valley, 3-2)

OF Adonis Garcia:  2-for-4, 3B (2), RS
29-year old Cuban kept his roster spot when Mustelier lost his.  Yankees supposedly like his defense better (he has played some center field, including tonight).  He's also been hitting well.
1B Kyle Roller: 1-for-4, 2 K
4-for-18 since promotion.
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  3-for-4, RBI
.338/.391/.513 in 80 AB while playing several positions.
SS Dean Anna:  0-for-4
IF Scott Sizemore:  0-for-3, SF, RBI
C Austin Romine:  1-for-2
Was pulled early - not sure why.  No, he wasn't traded for Felix Hernandez.
OF Antoan Richardson:  1-for-3, BB

RHP Joel De La Cruz (L, 1-1):  7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
15/5 GO/AO tonight.    He is a ground ball machine.  2.00 ERA in 18 IP since promotion with two walks and nine strikeouts.
RHP Branden Pinder:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Has been simply dazzling this season (20 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 HR, 2 BB, 21 K).  Supposedly he "lost" his slider last season, which lead to a terrible season.  Seems like he may have found it again.
---------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Erie, 2-1)

C/RF Pete O'Brien:  2-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS, 2 K
There is video of this HR online.   When he hit it, it looked like a fly ball to right field.  Next thing you know, it is carrying over the fence.   (Unlike in Yankee Stadium, balls do not carry well to RF in Trenton).  4th HR in 23 AB since promotion.
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-4
C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4, 2 K
Slump has reached 7-for-42 in his last 10 games.
1B/OF Tyler Austin:  1-for-4
Has played some 1B since promotion, with O'Brien getting some reps in RF.
2B Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-4
3B Rob Segedin: 1-for-4, K
OF Taylor Dugas:  0-for-4, K
Rare game where he does nothing useful.

RHP Bryan Mitchell: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Pulled after 45 pitches (28 strikes).  But it may have been planned, as Banuelos pitched in this game as well.
LHP Ty Webb: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Manny Banuelos (L, 0-1):  0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
Hopefully, this is not Manny being Manny.  5.59 ERA since joining Trenton.
RHP Manny Barreda:  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The better Manny?  We better hope not, because that would not be a good thing.  1.64 ERA; 22 IP, 14 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 8 BB, 20 K
Switch Pat Venditte:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
0.86 ERA; 21 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 HR, 5 BB, 28 K.   Left-handed hitters are hitting .083; Right-handed hitters are hitting .180
--------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated St. Lucie, 7-1)

CF Jake Cave:  3-for-4, HR (2), 3 RBI, RS, BB, K, 2 SB (5)
.314/.359/.436.   This is only the second full season for the 21-year old, who was fast-tracked to Charleston last year after only getting 1 AB (in 2012) in a short-season league.  A very much sneaky-good prospect to keep your eyes on.
3B Eric Jagielo: 1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
.246/.331/.455 in 134 AB.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-5, 2B (12), 2 RBI, 2 K
.289/.387/.453.  8 hits in last 40 AB.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-5, 3B (1), RS, 2 K
UTIL Claudio Custodio:  2-for-5, RBI, K, 2 SB (11)
The type of player who someday may get called up in September just because of his insane speed and base-stealing ability.

LHP Dan Camarena (W, 2-3):  7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
2.83 ERA; 41.1 IP, 45 H, 24 R, 13 ER, 3 HR, 15 BB, 35 K.  OK, the unearned runs are alarming.  But the 21-year old has been throwing quite well lately, and remains on the list of prospects to pay attention to.
RHP Kyle Haynes:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
------------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Hickory, 5-3)

2B/SS Tyler Wade: 1-for-4, 2B (6), RS, BB, 2 K
3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-4, RBI, 2 E (13)
Wow, that error total is just eye-popping.
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-4, K
I promise to not speak of a promotion for him until it actually happens.
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-4, RS, 2 K
That is the Michael O'Neill we have grown to love!
CF Brandon Thomas:  0-for-4, 2 K
Wow, this guy has been terrible.  .159 in 69 AB with 22 K.
UTIL John Murphy: 2-for-3, RBI, BB, SB (7)
2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-for-3, BB, K

LHP Ian Clarkin:  6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
15.2 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 14 K.  Nice start to his career.
LHP Omar Luis (L, 1-1):  3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR
Clarkin and Luis have been "tag-teaming" since joining this level.  Clarkin has been the more successful of the two, which makes sense, given that he is also the better of the two.
