Yankees Minor League Report 5/9/14: Aaron Judge Homers, Tyler Wade Drives Home Four in Charleston Victory

Some debuts tonight:
Kyle Roller in Scranton;
Branden Pinder in Scranton;
Pete O'Brien in Trenton
===================================
Scranton
(Defeated Durham, 3-2, to improve to 18-15)

OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-3, BB, K
C Austin Romine:  2-for-4, RS
Has his average up over .200 (.206) thanks to a 7-for-15 mini-surge.
1B/OF Ramon Flores:  0-for-3, 2 BB
Eight walks in last ten games.
1B/3B Russ Canzler:  2-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-2, 2 BB, K
Triple-A debut after much-earned promotion from Trenton (.385/.456/.808)
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  2-for-5, RBI
Hitting .350 in 60 AB.
OF Adonis Garcia:  1-for-3, BB, SB (6)
According to reports, the Yankees like Garcia over Mustelier because of the better defense (played center field tonight).   He has also hit this year (.301 in 103 AB).  Neither was much of a prospect, and both were on the older side - the Yankees just chose the one they felt better fit.
2B Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, RS
SS Dean Anna:  0-for-3, RBI, SF

RHP Joel De La Cruz:  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
11 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 8 K.    Continues to throw very well this season.
RHP Jose Ramirez (W, 1-0):  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Branden Pinder:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Triple-A debut for Pinder, who pitched to a 0.56 ERA and 18/2 K/BB ratio in 16 innings for Trenton.
RHP Mark Montgomery:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.65 ERA; 16.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 18 K
RHP Matt Daley (S, 5):  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
--------------------------------------
Trenton (Crushed Reading, 8-2)

OF Ben Gamel:  3-for-5, 3B (2), RBI, RS, K
Was in an 8-for-39 slide entering action today.
2B Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-3, 2 RS, BB
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-1, RBI, RS, 3 BB, SF, HBP
Hitting .290 with 19 walks in 26 games.  Given that he walked 42 times in 121 games in his last full season (2012), this is quite the spike in his rate.
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-5, RBI, K, SF
5-for-37 in his last 10 games.
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-3, RS, BB, K, SAC
Back over .200 (.201) - for now.
C/RF Pete O'Brien:  1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, RS, 2 K
Only appropriate that his first Double-A hit would go for extra bases, and that he would add a couple of strikeouts to the boxscore.

LHP Manny Banuelos:  3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
As I have said many times, until the Yankees start letting him loose, we really can't make many judgments.  They are saving his bullets, as he is on an innings limit.
RHP Manny Barreda (W, 2-0)
3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
1.83 ERA in 19.2 IP with 18/8 K/BB ratio.
LHP Aaron Dott:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
2.35 ERA in 15.1 IP with nine hits allowed, seven walks, and 11 strikeouts.
-----------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Lakeland, 4-3)

1B Greg Bird:  2-for-4, 2B (1), K
After his huge season taking walks last year, he has yet to walk in his first three games this year.
CF Jake Cave:  3-for-5, RS, K
Hitting .305 in 141 solid AB.    He's hitting, while Mason Williams is not.  I am not going to say that Cave is about to overtake Williams on the depth chart in center field - but Williams has to earn that 40-man slot this year as he becomes Rule 5 eligible in December.  We'll see what happens.
3B Eric Jagielo:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K, E (7)
Taking enough walks, hitting for enough power, but the batting average is not quite there, and the K rate is high.  Overall, I think I would take advanced power/discipline at this stage, and hope everything else just falls into place.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
Hitting .304 with 13 XBH, 19 walks, and 24 K in 115 AB.
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4
The positive?  So far, he is staying healthy.  The negative?  Hitting .250, which isn't terrible, but with only four walks in 33 games.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, RS

RHP Nick Goody:  1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Being treated like a true rehab stint, as he is actually starting these games he is appearing in.
RHP Rafael DePaula:  4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
3.45 ERA in 31.1 IP with 22 hits allowed, one HR, 18 BB and 40 K
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
3.48 ERA; 10.1 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 11 K.   Fairly ugly start for Rutckyj, despite the decent ERA.
------------------------------------
Charleston (Conquered Rome, 9-1)

OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS
Was in 2-for-22 slump entering the game.
2B/SS Tyler Wade:  3-for-5, 3B (1), 4 RBI, RS, K, CS (4)
SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-4, RS, BB
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K
Breaks 0-for-11 slide.
OF Michael O'Neill: 1-for-5, 3B (3), RBI, RS, K
He has been an interesting player this year - hitting .250 with 11 XBH in 31 games, but has walked only seven times to go along with 45 strikeouts.  Is also 12-for-14 stealing bases.
CF Brandon Thomas:  1-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (6)
Only hitting .180 (11-for-61) on the season.
UTIL John Murphy:  0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
1B Mike Ford:  1-for-3, 2B (4), RBI, RS, 2 BB

LHP Ian Clarkin:  4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
0.93 ERA in two starts.  Scouts see him as a cross between Sandy Koufax and Randy Keisler.
LHP Omar Luis (W, 1-0):  3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Nice game after a very rough first outing.
RHP Philip Walby:  0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
1.54 ERA; 11.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 18 K for the 21-year old out of San Diego State.
