Yankees Minor League Report 5/5/14: Ty Webb's Double-A Debut Doesn't Go as Planned; 3 Hits for Jake Cave in Tampa Loss

Scranton (Defeated Indianapolis, 7-6)

C Austin Romine:  2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS
.154/.228/.250 in 52 mostly forgettable AB.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  2-for-4, K
.286/.324/.505 in 105 AB.   That 2-for-27 line vs. LHP stings.  Of course, we shouldn't just be negative:  He has a 1.047 OPS vs. RHP.
1B/3B Russ Canzler:  3-for-3, 2B (5), RBI, 2 RS, BB
.259/.312/.383 in 81 AB
2B Jose Pirela:  2-for-4, 3B (2), 3 RBI, RS
.263/.276/.389.   The lack of plate discipline is surprising; he did walk 57 times in 129 games last year.
UTIL Ronnier Mustelier:  2-for-4, 2B (3), RS
.314/.340/.373 in 51 AB
IF Scott Sizemore:  1-for-5, RBI
The best part is that he didn't strike out, which places him back under the 50% K/AB mark.

RHP Shane Greene:  3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
4.66 ERA in 9.2 IP with 13 hits allowed, two walks, and 12 strikeouts.
RHP Yoshinori Tateyama:  2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
6.08 ERA should ease any temptation they may ever have of using him in the big leagues.
RHP Jim Miller (W, 2-1):  2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Veteran filler.
RHP Matt Daley (S, 3):  1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Guess he decided that since he can't get major league hitters out, why bother with minor league ones?

Trenton (Lost to New Britain, 3-2, in 10 innings)

C Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4, RBI, K
.284/.370/.484 in 95 AB.
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K, SB (4)
.210/.299/.294 in 119 ugly AB.   Has drawn a walk in seven of his last nine games, so there is that I suppose.
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-5, K
.269/.396/.436
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-4, 2B (6), K
.409/.481/.864 in 66 AB
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-5, 3 K
.291/.338/.346 in 127 AB
OF Taylor Dugas:  2-for-3, 2B (5), RS, K
.286/.396/.468 in 77 AB
IF Ali Castillo:  1-for-4, K, SB (1)

RHP Caleb Cotham:  6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Pitched to a 5.40 ERA in 18.1 innings for Scranton before demotion.
Switch Pat Venditte:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.13 ERA in 16 IP with 22/5 K/BB ratio.    Left-handed hitters are hitting .063 off of him.
Ty Webb (L, 0-1; BS, 1):  1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
Welcome to Double-A, son.

Tampa (Lost to Dunedin, 8-3)

CF Jake Cave:  3-for-5, CS (2)
.306/.338/.435 in 124 AB.
3B Eric Jagielo: 1-for-5, 2B (4), 3 K
Hitting .239 in 109 AB with 13 walks, 28 strikeouts, and nine XBH.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-3, RS, BB, K
.323/.433/.505 in 99 AB; 19 BB, 22 K
C/RF Pete O'Brien: 1-for-4, 2 K
.333/.366/.695 in 105 AB.  27/4 K/BB ratio.
2B Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
.261/.281/.333 in 111 AB.  4-for-38 (.105) in last 10 games
UTIL Zach Wilson:  1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS, BB, K
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-4, BB, 2 K
If it wasn't for his draft position and the fact that his defense is still considered to be at a very high level, there would be no need to report on him.   .211/.261/.257 with 30 K in 28 games.

LHP Conner Kendrick (L, 0-1):  3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
9th round pick in last year's draft out of Auburn pitched to a 4.15 ERA in 43.1 innings for Staten Island last year.  At 21 years of age, he is definitely not too young for this level, but interesting placement for his opening appearance of the season.  Not sure if this was an emergency type of deal or not.
RHP Eric Ruth:  4 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
4.44 ERA (4's are wild!) over 24.1 IP with 24 hits allowed, five walks, and 24 strikeouts.
--------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Delmarva, 4-3)

OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 K
.324/.420/.431 in 102 AB.   Has yet to really show off some of that power potential, but it is a bit silly to complain about much thus far.  We'll see how he does when he is challenged a bit more in Tampa.
SS Abiatal Avelino:  0-for-4, RS
.284/.336/.373 in 102 AB
2B/SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-4, K
.270/.339/.310 in 100 AB.
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-3, K
.230/.304/.370 in 100 AB
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-2, RS, HBP, SB (6)
.297/.366/.359 in 20 games.  6th round pick last year is 23 years old, so let us be a bit realistic here.   23 years old, being used as a guy playing all over the field instead of at a steady position, etc.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-2, RS, K, SAC
.211/.344/.342.  As you can see, he is getting on base pretty well, but the bat has just not yet started to heat up.
C Kale Sumner:  0-for-2, RS, BB, K
28th round pick last year is hitting .304/.469/.652 in a very small sample size (23 AB).   Big prospect, he is not - but he can catch, which will give him plenty of rope.

RHP Brady Lail (W, 4-1):  5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
3.98 ERA in 31.2 IP with 38 hits allowed, five walks, and 24 strikeouts.  Lail is an intriguing arm that already has some polish and also possesses some future upside.  Whether that all comes together in complete package is highly unlikely (though that is true of most pitching prospects), but strange things do happen.   18th round pick in 2012.
RHP Philip Walby:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
1.59 ERA with 18/3 K/BB ratio over 11.1 IP
RHP Nick Rumbelow (S, 5):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 18 K (!).   Yeah, it may be safe to say that he won't be here for too much longer.  College relief arms (he is 22) don't typically hang around down here for long if they show progress.
