Yankees Minor League Report 7/7/13: Betances Continues to Dominate; Corey Black's Strong Outing; Gallegos: Control Artist

Scranton (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 6-2)

Derek Jeter:  1-for-2, RS, 2 BB - First hit of the season.  Jeter will never live up to being a first round draft pick, but I still think he is a solid enough prospect.
Addison Maruszak:  1-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS - .274/.355/.419.    He has done nothing but hit since June started, but there is just zero room for him now.  Good insurance policy.
Randy Ruiz:  1-for-4, HR (8), 3 RBI, RS - If the Yankees wanted a veteran who mashes Triple-A pitching but hasn't had much success in the big leagues, why not just add Ruiz to the roster?  He at least bats right-handed.
Brent Lillibridge:  1-for-4, RBI, SB (5) - 16-for-50 since being signed.
Dan Johnson: 1-for-3, BB - If the Yankees wanted a veteran who is hitting well in the minors and actually has had some big league success, why not call up Johnson?  I just don't get the Ishikawa signing at all.     (.253/.386/.434)
Walter Ibarra:  1-for-2, 2 RS, BB

David Huff:  6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K -  Has a 31/5 K/BB ratio over 32.1 innings since joining Scranton.    ERA is 2.51
Dellin Betances:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K  (3.90 ERA; 55.1 IP, 37 H, 24 R, 24 ER, 2 HR, 27 BB, 66 K) - He has been so dominating in relief that his overall numbers now look quite good.    Has a 2.30 ERA in 31.1 innings with a 41/11 K/BB ratio.    In his last 10 games, he has a 0.53 ERA and 25/5 K/BB ratio over 17 innings.
---------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Reading, 3-2)

Tyler Austin:  1-for-3, RS, BB - .257/.349/.373 in 303 AB.  The recent decline in his walk rate has obviously affected what was once a solid OBP.
Jose Pirela:  2-for-4, 2B (13), RBI, RS - .252/.350/.390 in 282 AB.    OPS:  April:  .666; May:  .680; June: .847.  Is 8-for-19 in July.
Slade Heathcott:  1-for-4, K - .250/.317/.370 in 284 AB.    Hitting streak is now at 8.  9-for-22 in July.
Ramon Flores:   1-for-4, K - .241/.338/.332 in 328 AB.  He better get hot fast if he wants to salvage this season.
Andrew Clark:  1-for-4, 2 K - .317/.349/.483 in 60 AB; but is only 7-for-36 in last 10 games.
Carmen Angelini:  1-for-4, 2B (6), RS - 15-for-74 with seven XBH.
Cody Grice:  0-for-1, 3 BB

Sean Black:   6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K - 3.43 ERA in four starts since promotion.   Is 3-2 with a 2.24 ERA in 16 games (11 starts) overall.    Black struggled way too much in the past two seasons to really take him seriously, but he has pitched well this season.
Jeremy Bleich:  2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K - 2.76 ERA in 39.2 innings with a 30/23 K/BB ratio.   Left-handers actually hit him better than right-handers (.275 vs. .220)
------------------------------
Tampa:

Pete O'Brien:  1-for-3, 2B (2), BB, K -  Has 24 doubles, two triples, and 14 home runs in 239 total AB this season.    He has struck out 76 times in 65 games, but I believe offense will not be a problem with O'Brien.  Played 3B today.
Gary Sanchez:  1-for-3, BB - Has exactly one hit in each of his last four games.   Solid season that may end in Trenton, but that is not guaranteed.
Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-3, RS, BB - All the way down to .281 with Tampa.  5th straight hitless game.  Has more walks than strikeouts (42-40) since his promotion.
Ben Gamel:  0-for-4, 2 K - 0-for-11 in last three games.
Saxon Butler:  1-for-3, RBI - Struggling in Tampa (34-for-142).  Had a solid season in 2012, but it hasn't carried over.

Corey Black:  6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K - First start since 6/24 was a good one.   (3.97 ERA; 70.1 IP, 62 H, 43 R, 31 ER, 1 HR, 37 BB, 79 K).  The talent this kid has is quite impressive - if they decide to convert him to the bullpen, he can be here in a heartbeat - for now, best to keep him right where he is, though - because he has the overall potential to be a solid starter.
Diego Moreno:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K - Has a 7.04 ERA in 15.1 innings.  14/7 K/BB ratio.  Acquired in AJ Burnett deal.   Missed 2012 due to Tommy John surgery.
Taylor Garrison:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - Now has a 1.66 ERA for Tampa (21.2 IP, 14 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 18 K).  23-year old was drafted in the 7th round last season out of Fresno State.
----------------------------------

Staten Island (Defeated Connecticut, 6-2)

John Murphy:  1-for-3, 2B (2), 4 RBI, RS, SF - 14-for-61 (.230) for the left-handed hitting shortstop drafted in the 6th round.   Played for Sacred Heart, and had a good season in the Cape Cod League, a league the Yankees think highly of.
Brandon Thomas: 1-for-4, RBI, RS - 13-for-66
Michael O'Neill:  1-for-4, RS, 2 K, CS (4) - .274/.361/.329.  Only 4-for-8 stealing bases.
Kale Sumner:  1-for-3, 2B (4), BB - 20-for-62 since signing on the dotted line.
Yeicok Calderon:  1-for-4 - .299/.325/.545 in 77 AB after posting a .189/.257/.333 line in 159 AB for Charleston.
Isaias Tejada:   1-for-4, RBI

Giovanny Gallegos:  5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 HR -  Has yet to walk a batter in 23 IP this season.  Walked two in 27 IP last season.   He is just cruising along.  21-year old RHP.
Dillon McNamara:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K - Has allowed one run in 10.1 innings since signing.  K/BB ratio is a rather pedestrian 9/7, however.
