Yankees Minor League Report 7/13/13: Slade Heathcott's Streak Reaches 12; Pete O'Brien Drives In 5; Corey Black and Bryan Mitchell Thrive; Greg Bird Hits Number 10

In case you missed it, Mark Montgomery is on a rehab stint.  He pitched for the GCL Yankees on Friday.
------------------
Scranton:  (Swept DH from Buffalo, 2-1 and 5-0)

David Adams:  3-for-6, 2 2B (8), 2 RBI, RS, BB - Yankees stuck with him until he started to show some improvement getting on base.  At that point, they demote him for the sake of Luis Cruz and Alberto Gonzalez.
Dan Johnson:  2-for-6, 2 HR (14), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB
JR Murphy:  1-for-3 - .297/.369/.462 in 91 AB for Scranton; .277/.358/.434 overall.
Melky Mesa:  0-for-4, K, HBP - Activated off of the disabled list.
Thomas Neal - 0-for-3, BB
Randy Ruiz:  2-for-3, 2B (3), RBI, 2 RS - You have to love the grinders (35-year old plucked out of the Mexican League because the Yankees needed a warm body)
Adonis Garcia:  1-for-4
Fernando Martinez:  1-for-5, RBI - Left Game 2 for unknown reasons.
Brent Lillibridge:  3-for-7, RS - Hitting .338 since joining Scranton.

Francisco Rondon:  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K - Emergency start.    He has been a completely different pitcher since being DFA'd.
Dellin Betances:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K  (3.62 ERA; 59.2 IP, 40 H, 24 R, 24 ER, 2 HR, 30 BB, 71 K) - Betances has allowed 8 runs in 35.2 innings as a reliever with a 46/14 K/BB ratio.  He has been simply awesome in this role.
-----------------------
Trenton:   (Defeated New Britain, 6-1)

Slade Heathcott:  3-for-4, 2B (15), RBI, 2 RS, BB -  Hitting streak is up to 12.  Average is now .259.   Heathcott is 16-for-39 in the month of July.  Don't count this kid out just yet.
Ramon Flores:  0-for-5 - He does have 10 hits in his last 40 AB, but his overall season has been forgettable.    (.241/.333/.328).  Interestingly, he has thrived with runners on base (.800 OPS) while struggling when the bases are empty (.599 OPS).  Could just be random variance, but still interesting enough for me to post.
Andrew Clark:  1-for-4, 2B (6), 2 RBI - Hitting .303 with 11 RBI in 20 games.
Carmen Angelini:  0-for-3, BB
Jose Pirela:  1-for-5, RS - 16 hits in last 36 AB; 10-game hitting streak.

Zach Nuding (W, 3-10):  5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K (4.23 ERA: 100 IP, 118 H, 62 R, 47 ER, 9 HR, 39 BB, 78 K) - 108.1 is his high inning total in his career.    Not a great season, but enough to keep him on the radar.
Cesar Cabral:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - Would love to see some progression in the second half.
Tom Kahnle:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - 2.52 ERA in 39.1 IP with 44/24 K/BB ratio.   He has been through a few bumps along the road this year, but has generally been solid and has often been overpowering.
------------------------
Tampa:  (Swept a DH from Bradenton, 10-0 and 3-2)

Pete O'Brien:  3-for-7, 2B (4), HR (4), 5 RBI, 3 RS, BB - Hitting .258 with Tampa   Has 24 RBI in 63 AB since joining the squad.      He has a bit of an Evan Gattis/Mark Trumbo type of feel to him.    A masher who is going to strike out, perhaps run into a few deep slumps, but in the end is a very useful bat.   He has been playing catcher, third, and DH for Tampa as they have been able to find a way to use him and Gary Sanchez in the same lineup.
Gary Sanchez:  3-for-7, RBI, BB - .270/.333/.470 in 296 AB with 60 RBI.  Strong season for Sanchez, as we anticipate his chance at the upper minors.
Mason Williams:  2-for-4, 2 2B (16), 2 RS - First game since 7/3.  Williams is now hitting .263/.339/.367 in 278 AB.    He has 12 hits in his last 37 AB.    Pretty much, Williams has been hitting very well since the calendar turned to June.
Ben Gamel:  1-for-3, 2B (25), 3 RS, BB
Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-6, BB, SB (9) - 16-for-18 SB between Charleston/Tampa.   In his career, he is 27-for-30.  His overall slash line has dipped to .289/.402/.414 thanks to a 2-for-35 slide.
Dan Fiorito:  1-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, RS, BB
Yeral Sanchez:  2-for-7, 2B (9), HR (2), 4 RBI, RS - 27-year old signed out of Cuba.
Taylor Dugas:  1-for-4, RS

Corey Black (W, 3-7):  5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K (3.81 ERA; 75.2 IP, 68 H, 44 R, 32 ER, 1 HR, 39 BB, 84 K) - Overall, you would have to say that Black's season has been generally solid.
Charley Short:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (2.81 ERA; 25.2 IP, 18 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 35 K) - Minor League free agent signing has a 56/8 K/BB ratio between Charleston/Tampa in 38.1 innings.

Bryan Mitchell:  5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K - He needed an outing like this, though he also did throw 3 wild pitches.  (4.55 ERA; 97 IP, 101 H, 60 R, 49 ER, 5 HR, 42 BB, 85 K)  His K rate has ticked upwards as the season has gone along.
Taylor Garrison:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - Been a bit under the radar this year.    Has a 1.23 ERA between Charleston/Tampa with a 36/7 K/BB ratio over 36.2 IP.  23 years old.
--------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Augusta, 4-1)

Greg Bird:  2-for-4, HR (10), RBI, RS - .277/.400/.477 in 300 AB.    Bird was in a 2-for-26 slump, but now has five hits (including 2 HR) in last two contests.
Cito Culver:  0-for-4, K, E (11) - .229/.318/.367 in 297 AB.  10 hits in last 35 AB.
Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4 - .232/.283/.360 in 228 AB between Charleston/Tampa.  Most of the bad damage was done in Tampa, leading to his demotion here.

Evan Rutckyj:  6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K (4.79 ERA; 82.2 IP, 98 H, 49 R, 44 ER, 7 HR, 38 BB, 72 K) - All things considered, a decent enough season for the 21-year old LHP.
---------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Auburn, 6-1)

Michael O'Neill: 1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS, 3 K - Hitting .284 despite 34 K in 95 AB.  That would be a lot of Gatorade coolers for Uncle Paul.
Brandon Thomas:  1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, RS, BB - .222/.376/.321 in 81 AB.  6-for-8 SB.
Bubba Jones:  2-for-4, 2B (6), BB - .260/.333/.338 in 77 AB; 11 hits in last 33 AB.
Yeicok Calderon: 1-for-4, RBI - .289/.326/.511.  He is a man among the boys in Staten Island; he is a boy among the men in Charleston (.189/.257/.333 earlier this year)
Jose Rosario:  3-for-5, 2 RBI, SB (2) - 10-for-37.  Another one of those GCL standouts (In 2011, he put up a .901 OPS at that level) who hasn't hit much since graduating from that league.
Radley Haddad:  1-for-4, RS, BB - 23-year old left-handed hitting catcher was undrafted.  He went to a Independent League tryout and was ready to sign when the Yankees called to offer him a contract.   I love stories like these.
John Murphy:  0-for-4
Hector Crespo:  1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, SB (2) - Second baseman was a 34th round pick out of Appalachian State in the 2013 draft.

Philip Walby:  4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K - 1.93 ERA in 14 IP with a 15/10 K/BB ratio.  20-year old selected in the 12th round out of San Diego State.
Caleb Smith:  4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K - 2.65 ERA with 18/5 K/BB ratio over 17 IP.
