Yankees Minor League Report 7/23/13: Slade Heathcott Homers; Mason Williams & Robert Refsnyder Light Up the Scoreboard for Tampa

Greg Bird was given the night off tonight.

Scranton:  (Lost both ends of DH to Toledo, 4-1 and 3-1)

JR Murphy:  2-for-8, 2 2B (11) - .Just trucking along.    Hitting .298 for Scranton.  8-game hitting streak.
David Adams:  1-for-3, RS, 2 BB
Adonis Garcia:  2-for-7, BB
Randy Ruiz:  1-for-6, BB
Dan Johnson:  0-for-6, RBI
Ronnier Mustelier:  0-for-7 - 1-for-27 since coming back from DL.
Bobby Wilson: 1-for-2, HR (5), RBI, RS - You're still here?

Michael Pineda:  3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K - According to Brian Cashman, he was pulled due to an innings restriction, not due to injury.
Caleb Cotham:  3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Sam Demel:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - Activated off of the DL.    Has a 1.36 ERA with 39/12 K/BB ratio over 33 innings.  If you remember, the Yankees were deciding between Claiborne and Demel on who would get called up a few months back.
Mike Zagurski:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K - Veteran left-hander has a 2.34 ERA with a 60/14 K/BB ratio over 34.2 innings.    Awesome K rate, but has never found major league success (6.84 ERA in 88 career major league games)
Yoshinori Tateyama:  1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1 HR - Guess his screwball didn't screw.

Jim Miller:  1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K - Veteran has a 3.97 ERA on the season with 69/19 K/BB ratio over 47.2 innings.
-----------------------------------------------------
Trenton:  (Swept DH vs. Altoona, 3-1 and 3-2)

Slade Heathcott:  3-for-7, 2B (18), HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (11) - Now hitting .264.    Not taking many walks, but given where he was earlier in the year, he has come on strong.
Jose Pirela:  1-for-6, 3B (5), RBI, RS
Ramon Flores:  1-for-5, 2 BB - Nice to see the walks, at least.    He does have 56 on the season.  But everything else is still quite disappointing, overall.
Kyle Roller: 1-for-3, HR (12), 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB, SF - 4-for-30 slide entering double-header, so this is nice to see.
Andrew Clark:  2-for-6
Carmen Angelini:  0-for-6, SB (6) - Average all the way down to .191 for Trenton.

David Phelps:  3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR - Rehab appearance
Francisco Rondon:  2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K - 4.71 ERA with 55/36 K/BB ratio over 57 innings.  The Yankees will have a few bullpen slots to fill in 2014, and if Boone Logan is allowed to walk, that gives Rondon even more of a shot at making it.

Zach Nuding (W, 5-10):  7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K - Nice 7-inning minor league CG for Nuding.  He now has a 3.98 ERA over 106.1 innings for Trenton with a 79/42 K/BB ratio.
--------------------------------------------------
Tampa:  (Defeated Palm Beach, 9-5)

Robert Refsnyder:  3-for-5, 2B (21), HR (4), 6 RBI, RS, BB, CS (4) - All year long, Refsnyder has been a streaky hitter.   He now has a mini 4-game hitting streak.
Mason Williams:  4-for-6, 2B (20), 3B (3), RBI, 3 RS - All of a sudden, Williams is hitting .282.    He is 35-for-90 (.389) since the ASB.   He also has a 13-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games.    He is looking like the prospect he was supposed to be entering the season.
Taylor Dugas:  2-for-4, CS (1)
Pete O'Brien:  0-for-5 - 0-for-14 slump.
Fu-Lin Kuo:  2-for-5, 2 RBI, RS - 11-for-63.
Ali Castillo: 3-for-4, RS

Corey Black: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR (4.25 ERA; 82.2 IP, 79 H, 54 R, 39 ER, 2 HR, 45 BB, 88 K) - As I have alluded to, if the Yankees put him in the bullpen right now, he may just jump to the top of the Yankees relief prospects list.   But I am still hoping he can stick in the rotation, as that is a bigger need (and obviously, much more valuable)
--------------------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Hickory, 5-1)

Jake Cave:  2-for-4, 2B (26), RBI, RS, SB (9) - Four two-hit games in his last five games played.  Average up to .269.
Cito Culver:  2-for-5, RBI - Has recorded at least one hit in seven of his last eight contests.  Average up to .239.
Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, 2 RS, BB - Average has inched its way up to .207.  Out of the "interstate" danger zone, for now.  6-game hitting streak.

Cesar Vargas (W, 4-3):  7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K - 2.96 ERA with 75/31 K/BB ratio over 91.1 innings.    The 21-year old RHP has been in the system since 2009, slowly but surely working his way up from the DSL to here.
John Brebbia:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - 4.20 ERA with 16/3 K/BB ratio over 15 innings for Charleston.  Drafted in 30th round in 2011 out of Elon; pitched well at this level last year, but is already 23 years old.
----------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Connecticut, 6-4)

Yeicok Calderon: 3-for-4, 2B (8), RBI - There are a few contenders for "best name in the organization", and Calderon is in the running.     Hitting well at this level, but that isn't a surprise.
Michael O'Neill: 1-for-5, RS
Brandon Thomas:  0-for-5, K
Derek Toadvine:  2-for-4, RS
Bubba Jones:  1-for-3
Mike Ford:  1-for-4, RS - Professional debut for Ford.  Yankees signed him as an undrafted FA out of Princeton.
Kale Sumner:  0-for-4
Jose Rosario: 1-for-5, 2B (5), RS - Hit well in the GCL a few years ago, but has done very little since at the plate.  He is on the radar because he does play up-the-middle (Played SS tonight; also plays 2B)

Giovanny Gallegos:  3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K -  2.52 ERA in 35.2 innings with a 27/6 K/BB ratio.   He doesn't struggle like this often.
Stefan Lopez:  2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K - 0.89 ERA in 20.1 innings with a 22/4 K/BB ratio.  22-year old RHP.
