Yankees Minor League Report 7/17/2013: Mason Williams is Red Hot; Pete O'Brien Homers

Trenton (Lost to Reading, 6-5.  For those who care, the Thunder's record is currently 48-48)

Andrew Clark:  2-for-4, 2B (7), HR (3), 4 RBI, RS - .290/.327/.462.  Not bad for a player plucked out of the independent leagues to fill a void.    Clark is 25 years old, and his first time in Double-A.
Slade Heathcott:  1-for-4, RS - .257/.321/.370 in 319 AB.    He is now hitting .351 (20-for-57) in July, and can perhaps earn his way to Scranton for the end of the season.
Jose Pirela:  0-for-3, RS, BB - .259/.357/.396 in 313 AB.    He is hitting .360 (18-for-50) in July after hitting .309 in 81 AB in June.   After playing some outfield in 2012, he has mostly kept to second base in 2013.
Kyle Roller:  0-for-3, BB - First game since 7/2 after suffering a leg injury.  .267/.356/.451 in 288 AB.
Yeral Sanchez:  3-for-4, RBI, 2 RS - 28-year old signed out of Cuba.  First Double-A game (hit .226 in 115 AB for Tampa)

Sean Black (L, 2-3):  5 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 HR - Now this is the Black that we remember from 2011 and 2012.    Now has a 4.22 ERA in 32 IP for Trenton.
Cesar Cabral:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - 6th consecutive scoreless outing.  (7 IP).   Has 4/1 K/BB ratio in those games.   This is a kid to watch for 2014, assuming the Yankees can hold onto him.  I assume he will once again be exposed to the Rule 5 draft if he isn't protected on the 40-man.  The Yankees drafted him in the Rule 5 prior to 2012, but he was injured the entire season.  They exposed him to waivers earlier this summer, and he went unclaimed, allowing the Yankees to outright him to the minors.

Tampa (Lost to Jupiter, 4-3)

Mason Williams:  3-for-5, RS - All the way up to .275/.347/.376 thanks to an incredible 18-for-42   stretch in his last 10 games and a 26-for-66 stretch since the ASB.   Williams' stock is rising fast, though his season vs. left-handed pitching has not been good (.530 OPS in 103 AB)
Pete O'Brien: 3-for-5, HR (5), 2 RBI, RS - .313/.326/.578 in 83 AB for Tampa; .321/.375/.606 in 277 AB overall with 16 HR and 67 RBI.  I am very intrigued by what he will do in Trenton next year.
Gary Sanchez:  2-for-4 - .270/.332/.460 in 311 AB.   Power hasn't really been there lately (2 XBH in last 10 games), but make no mistake about it:  Sanchez has done everything he needs to do to graduate from A-Ball.
Ben Gamel:  0-for-4 - .283/.351/.416 in 322 AB for one of my favorite "sleeper" prospects.
Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-2, BB - 4-for-37 in July.  On the plus side, only three strikeouts during that time period.   So, some elements of bad luck could be in play.
Taylor Dugas:  2-for-5 - 10-for-38 for Tampa with six walks and four strikeouts.  In other words, doing what he typically does.

Scottie Allen (L, 7-4):  6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 HR - Now has a 3.77 ERA in 90.2 innings with a 59/24 K/BB ratio between Tampa/Trenton (1 start for Trenton).    Definitely nowhere near a top-50 list of Yankees prospects.
------------------------------------
Charleston:  (Lost to Greensboro, 4-3)

Cito Culver:  2-for-5, RS - .229/.316/.365.  At one point this year, I wrote about his complete lack of progression, despite playing in this league for a second season. Well, his OPS is now 77 points higher than it was last year...of course, if you can do the math, it does show just how bad he was last year.
Greg Bird:  1-for-3, RBI, 2 BB - Hitting .273/.396/.477 in 308 AB.  I think the plan is to keep him at first base, but I wonder if the Yankees would attempt to add to his versatility by asking him to play a little corner outfield?   I doubt it will happen, but you really need to be a special offensive player to be a strong major league first baseman.  So far, Bird has done that - we'll see if it continues.
Angelo Gumbs:  2-for-5, RBI, CS (4) - 21-for-81 for Charleston.  15-for-49 in July.  There is a lot to like about Gumbs, who has the athleticism to play many different positions.  But he struggled mightily in Tampa earlier this year.
Jake Cave:  1-for-4, 2B (24), RS - Only 9-for-45 in July.  Could be getting tired.  As stated previously, he had one professional at-bat prior to 2013.
Dante Bichette:  0-for-3, BB - Back down to .199

Dan Camarena: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2 HR - First rough outing since 5/24.  From 5/29 - 7/11, he allowed two runs on 11 hits with 19 strikeouts and two walks over 33 innings.   I don't know how much more he will pitch in 2013; he has thrown 75.2 innings after throwing 17.2 all of last year.
------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Batavia, 8-6)

Eric Jagielo:  2-for-4, RS, BB - Hitting .364 (16-for-44).  Fingers crossed...
Yeicok Calderon:  3-for-5, 2B (6), HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS - After a disappointing season for Charleston, I am not going to get too excited about what he does here.  I am just glad he is hitting well after his demotion here as he tries to earn his way back up.
Brandon Thomas:  0-for-5, 4 K
Michael O'Neill:  0-for-5, 3 K  - Suffice to say, not a good night for two of their college outfield draftees.
Kale Sumner:  2-for-4, RS, BB - .318/.404/.435 in 85 AB.
Bubba Jones:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
Derek Toadvine:  3-for-5, RS

Cale Coshow:  2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K - 3.12 ERA with 16/8 K/BB ratio over 17.1 innings.
David Palladino:  2.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K - 5.50 ERA in 18 innings with 17/8 K/BB ratio.
