Yankees Minor League Report 7/14/13: Greg Bird Hits Third HR in Three Days; Jose Campos Cruising Along; Eric Jagielo Has Three Hit Day

Scranton (Lost to Buffalo, 7-1)

JR Murphy:  2-for-3, 2B (7), RBI - .309/.377/.479 in 94 AB for Scranton; .282/.361/.440 overall in 277 AB with 34 walks and 50 strikeouts.    Typically speaking, I would not be much in favor of rushing anybody to the majors.  However, it isn't like the Yankees themselves have taken a cautious approach with Murphy.  They have aggressively promoted him through the system, and he continues to reward them.  I don't know what the second half of the season will bring, but the catching situation in the majors is so horrific that you have to really consider this move.
David Adams:  0-for-3, RS, BB - He really has no business down here right now with the current state of the major league roster and the complete ineptitude of the left side of the infield.  This is not me saying that Adams lit the place on fire, but at least you can ran him out there and see what you have.  We already know what Cruz/Gonzalez are.
Melky Mesa:  1-for-3 - .245/.274/.426 with 93 K in 237 AB.
Randy Ruiz:  0-for-4
Brent Lillibridge: 0-for-3, HBP, CS (2)

Brett Marshall (L, 4-7):  6 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 3 K, 1 HR (5.99 ERA; 88.2 IP, 99 H, 66 R, 59 ER, 15 HR, 54 BB, 77 K) - Best we can hope for now is some sort of massive hot streak.  He had one going, but the last two starts have been dreadful.
Chase Whitley:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K (3.72 ERA; 36.1 IP, 36 H, 15 R, 15 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 34 K) - No runs allowed in last five appearances, covering 11.1 innings.
------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to New Britain, 1-0.  Trenton had only one hit in the game)

Jose Pirela: 1-for-3, BB - And it is no surprise that it came off the bat of Pirela, who now has an 11-game hitting streak (.265/.360/.404 in 302 AB overall with a 14-for-17 stolen base rate. He also has 41 walks to 38 strikeouts)
Slade Heathcott:  0-for-4 - 12-game hitting streak snapped.  .256/.322/.370 in 305 AB.  16-for-43 in July.
Ramon Flores:  0-for-3, BB - .239/.333/.325 in 348 AB.
Andrew Clark:  0-for-4, K - Average down to .288.

Shane Greene (L, 3-2):  6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K (3.33 ERA; 27 IP, 29 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 7 BB, 22 K since promotion; 3.53 ERA with a 91/17 K/BB ratio over 102 IP overall).  This is a kid who walked 63 hitters in 112 innings last year.
Graham Stoneburner:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - It is unfortunate that one of the best names in the system had some injury issues that he just never really seemed to come back from.  Has a 4.40 ERA in 57.1 innings, with only 23 strikeouts.    Playing in a full season league for the first time in 2010, he struck out 137 batters in 142 innings to get himself squarely on the map.
------------------------------------
Tampa (Defeated Bradenton, 4-3)

Mason Williams:  2-for-4, RBI, RS, SB (11) - Coming on very strong as of late.    Now hitting .266/.341/.369 thanks to a 13-for-38 stretch over his last 10 games.    He is 20-for-53 since the ASB and 31-for-95 since the beginning of June.
Pete O'Brien:  2-for-4 -  .286/.303/.543 for Tampa; .314/.371/.598 overall with 15 home runs and 65 runs batted in.  Played third base today.
Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4 - .270/.332/.467.
Ben Gamel: 1-for-4, 2B (26) - Let the extra base hits keep coming (.288/.359/.427).  There are some questions about his defense, but he can adequately cover the corners and is passable enough in a pinch in center field.    His bat is what will potentially carry him, though.
Robert Resfnyder:  0-for-3 - Can you believe he is down to .266 in Tampa?    He is in a 2-for-35 slide and is only 13-for-72 since the ASB.
Ali Castillo: 2-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS - .219/.289/.272 in 265 AB.    He actually hit well in Charleston last year, but hasn't done much of anything in 2013.

Joel De La Cruz:  5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K - 2.53 ERA in 53.1 innings with a 36/18 K/BB ratio.  Again, not much to write home about, but he has done a nice enough job this year.
-------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Augusta, 5-4, in 10 innings)

Reymond Nunez:  2-for-4, 2 HR (10), 2 RBI, 2 RS - .252/.311/.463 in 218 AB.  22-year old has always been more about potential than performance.
Greg Bird:  1-for-4, HR (11), RBI, RS - Third HR in three games.   .276/.398/.484 in what has been a "Top 10 Prospect" type of performance.   (Top 10 in the organization - not in baseball!)
Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, RS - .197/.270/.289 in 325 AB. Angelo Gumbs:   0-for-3, RS, BB - .264/.321/.472 in 72 AB for Charleston.
Cito Culver:  0-for-4, 2 K - 0-for-8 in last two games after extended hot streak.   Hitting .273 (21-for-77) since ASB.

Jose Campos:  4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K (3.66 ERA; 64 IP, 64 H, 30 R, 26 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 60 K) - Campos has a 1.13 ERA in four starts (16 IP) since ASB with 14/0 K/BB ratio.    Yankees have been understandably careful with him, and he has responded nicely.
Ty Webb:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - Has 20/3 K/BB ratio in 12 IP between Staten Island/Charleston.  Has allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits.  I would think of Webb as a fast track candidate.
------------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Auburn, 7-6)

Eric Jagielo:  3-for-5, 2B (2), 3 RBI, 2 RS - 12-for-36 since promotion; 14-for-45 overall.
Michael O'Neill: 2-for-5, 2B (7), 2 RS, SB (6) - .290/.351/.380.  I talk a lot about his high K rate (36 in 100 AB), but this is not a bad start to his professional career.
Brandon Thomas: 1-for-4, 2 RBI - .224/.371/.318
Bubba Jones:  0-for-3, RS, BB - .250/.330/.325
Isaias Tejada:  0-for-2, RS, 2 BB - .225/.304/.324 in 71 AB

Jairo Heredia:  4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K  (3.45 ERA; 28.2 IP, 29 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 31 K)
Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (7 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 1 BB, 7 K)
