Yankees Minor League Report 7/8/13: Murphy: 3 Hits; Heathcott Keeps Hitting; Sanchez Drives Home a Pair

Scranton (Defeated Rochester, 6-3)

Derek Jeter:  0-for-2, RS, BB - Can't hit, but is taking his share of walks.
JR Murphy:  3-for-4, 2B (6), RS, BB - Hitting .307 (23-for-75) with nine XBH.   He has 10 walks and 14 strikeouts.   I would have never said this before the season, but I would seriously consider handing him the major league job after the ASB.
Josh Bell:  2-for-4, HR (5), 3 RBI, RS - There was a time when Bell was a good third base prospect.  That time isn't now, but it isn't like Mike Schmidt (or even Mike Pagliarulo) is manning the hot corner at the moment.
Randy Ruiz:  1-for-4, 2 RBI
Thomas Neal:  2-for-3, 2B (15), RS, BB - .321/.399/.417
Addison Maruszak:  0-for-4, 2 K - .269/.350/.412
Brent Lillibridge:  1-for-4, RS
Dan Johnson:  1-for-4, RBI, RS

Chase Whitley (S, 2):  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K - Don't look now, but it appears that Whitley is finding his groove.   Last 3 appearances:  7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K.   Overall, he has a 4.22 ERA over 32 IP with a 31/9 K/BB ratio.
----------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Reading, 10-6)

Slade Heathcott:  2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, CS (8) - .253/.322/.372 as his hitting streak has reached 9.  11-for-26 in July.
Jose Pirela:  2-for-4, 2B (14), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 SB (14) - .255/.354/.395.   Pirela is hitting .435 (10-for-23) in July and has been one of the hottest hitters in the organization since the beginning of June.    The Yankees took him off of shortstop following the 2011 season, and he now plays the majority of his games at second.  He has also covered third base and left field.
Carmen Angelini:  1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS - .205 (16-for-78) since joining Trenton; .271/.332/.433 overall.
Andrew Clark:  1-for-5, RBI, 3 K - Average has tumbled to .308.  Struck out 17 times in 17 games. But the Yankees are playing with house money here; if Clark truly became anything useful, he would be a huge story.
Reegie Corona:  1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS, BB
Casey Stevenson:  1-for-2, 2B (4), 2 RS, 2 BB, SB (1)
Cody Grice:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, SB (3) - 6-for-20 since joining Trenton.

Zach Nuding:  6.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (4.36 ERA; 95 IP, 112 H, 61 R, 46 ER, 8 HR, 37 BB, 75 K) - Struggles continue.  Has a 5.57 ERA in last 10 starts.
Tom Kahnle:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - Rare for Kahnle to not have a walk or a strikeout in an appearance.  (2.65 ERA; 37.1 IP, 21 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 4 HR, 24 BB, 42 K)
--------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Brevard County, 4-3)

Gary Sanchez:  1-for-4, 2B (20), 2 RBI - .269/.332/.470 in 279 AB.    Best way to describe his season is "solid".
Ben Gamel:  2-for-4 - .281/.350/.414 in 292 AB with 15-for-19 SB rate.    I am very intrigued to see what he will do in Trenton.
Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-4 - .297/.410/.427 in 293 AB between Charleston/Tampa.  1-for-14 in July.
Taylor Dugas:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB - 36 walks in 63 games between Charleston/Tampa.  3-for-14 with four walks since promotion.
Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, RS - 11-for-49 with Tampa.  6 of those hits have gone for extra bases, but he has also struck out 18 times.
Saxon Butler:  2-for-4, 2B (8), RS

Bryan Mitchell:  6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K (4.60 ERA; 92 IP, 98 H, 58 R, 47 ER, 5 HR, 41 BB, 77 K) - Threw 120 innings last year, so no worries there.  A very uneven season for Mitchell, who has top stuff but it just isn't translating into performance.
----------------------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Connecticut, 7-6)

Eric Jagielo:  1-for-3, RS, 2 BB - 7-for-17.
Michael O'Neill:  2-for-5, 2B (5), 3B (1), RS - Hitting .282 (22-for-78)
Kale Sumner:  1-for-3, RBI, BB - Hitting .323 (21-for-65).    Has a 9-game hitting streak.
Bubba Jones:  3-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB - 15-for-63.  7th round pick out of HS in 2011.   Still looking for first professional home run.  20 years old.
Derek Toadvine:  1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS - 19-for-77.     The 2 RBI represent his first two runs batted in as a professional.

Caleb Smith:  4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K - Has a 3.46 ERA over 13 innings with a 15/4 K/BB ratio.
Philip Walby:  2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 2 WP - Anytime you strike out the side in two consecutive innings, you will earn a spot in this report.   Now has 12 strikeouts (and seven walks) in 10 innings.
Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, WP -  I guess the defense hasn't been supportive, given the three unearned runs he has allowed in five innings.  More importantly, he has a 9/1 K/BB ratio.
