Yankees Minor League Report 7/12/13: Slade Heathcott Has 11-Game Hitting Streak; Greg Bird Hits a Slam; Giovanny Gallegos Walks a Batter

Scranton:

Game was suspended in the 11th inning, tied 6-6.   I will give the numbers when they finish the game, which I assume will be tomorrow.
-----------------
Trenton (Defeated New Britain, 4-1)

Ramon Flores:  3-for-4 - Much needed night for Flores, who was 5 for his last 35 entering tonight.
Jose Pirela:  3-for-4, 2 2B (16), RBI, 2 RS - Average all the way up to .265.  17 hits in last 35 AB.  Has walked 40 times..while striking out 38 times in 294 AB.
Andrew Clark:  1-for-3, 2B (5), BB - Hitting .306 (22-for-72).  6-game hitting streak, though they are all 1-hit games.
Slade Heathcott:  1-for-5, K, SB (9) - Not a great night, but it does extend his hitting streak to 11 games.   13-for-35 in July.
Tyler Austin:  0-for-4, 2 K - 6 hits in his last 37 AB.   I am not going to try to sugarcoat his season too much, but we do have to remember he is 21 years old (won't be 22 until after the season) trying to break through a tough barrier, playing his home games in a tough ballpark (especially for right-handed hitters.  Not that Yankee Stadium is a treat for right-handed hitters!).   Entering tonight's game, he actually had a .790 OPS on the road.
Jose Gil:  1-for-4 - Where have you been?  The now-26 year old catcher has always come with a solid reputation on defense - especially in the throwing department.  Had a .615 OPS in 253 AB last year for Trenton/Scranton.   His bat isn't much (occasional HR power).

Sean Black (W, 2-2):  6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K - Pitching to a 3.00 ERA in 27 IP for Trenton with a 14/11 K/BB ratio.  Eh.
Jeremy Bleich:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K - Pitching decently this season (2.66 ERA but with a 35/26 K/BB ratio over 44 IP).   Has been more effective vs. right-handed hitters.
Danny Burawa (S, 2):  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K - 3.74 ERA over 43.1 IP with a 44/31 K/BB ratio.
The arm is good - but he does need to harness it a bit.
--------------------------------
Tampa:
Rained Out (Again)
---------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Augusta, 8-7 on a Jackson Valera RBI single with 2 outs in the B-9th)

Greg Bird:  3-for-4, 3B (3), HR (9), 4 RBI, 2 RS, BB - HR was a grand slam.    Bird hasn't been hitting at home, so this is a big performance for him.    Hitting .274 with 36 XBH and 51 RBI in 296 AB.  Has walked 59 times, though he has also struck out 89 times.
Cito Culver:  1-for-3, 2B (16), 2 RS, 2 BB - Culver has five doubles in his last five games and has 12 hits in his last 34 AB, 8 for extra bases.   We must remember that he has transitioned to being a right-handed hitter only this year.  We will see if this continues.
Angelo Gumbs:  2-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, RS - Now hitting .292 in 65 AB since demotion.  Has 13 hits in last 35 AB.
Jackson Valera: 2-for-5, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS - Big night aside, the 21-year old catcher hasn't hit much in the minors to date.
Jake Cave:  0-for-4, SAC
Dante Bichette:  0-for-5, 4 K - Down to .196 with 85 K in 82 games.  I can accept strikeouts if you are showing overall progress (IE, Bird) - but the only thing Bichette does well is produce outs.

Cesar Vargas:  6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K  (3.21 ERA; 81.1 IP, 67 H, 35 R, 29 ER, 4 HR, 31 BB, 70 K) - Vargas is a 21-year old RHP out of Mexico.   I don't think the upside is huge, but what he has is plenty good:  Low-to-mid 90s fastball with decent off-speed stuff.  Someone to monitor.
------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Lowell, 6-5)

Brandon Thomas:  3-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, BB - Much needed game to get his average back up to .221.  Thomas has shown good plate discipline (17 walks in 22 games).
Eric Jagielo:  1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, BB - Hitting .290 for Staten Island.  Holding his own thus far.
Michael O'Neill:  2-for-5, 2 RS, SB (5), 3 K - Hitting .286 despite 31 K in 22 games.
Bubba Jones:  2-for-4, RBI, RS - 18-for-73.    Jones is a 20 year old with some upside in his bat, but it just has yet to come together.  It would be nice for him to show signs of life.
Derek Toadvine: 2-for-5, RS -  Hitting .239.   Second baseman has been hitting leadoff.  Drafted out of Kent State this year.
John Murphy:  2-for-4, 2B (3), RBI - SS is only hitting .219.

Giovanny Gallegos:  5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K - The biggest news is not the shutout - he does enough of that.  It is the fact he allowed a walk, his first this season (28 IP).  He walked one in 27 IP last season.   His career consists of one clunker (June 27th of this year) amongst brilliance.  I assume we will see him in a full season league in 2013, when he will be 22 years old.
Andy Beresford:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - 2.25 ERA with a 6/3 K/BB ratio over 8 IP.  Another giant (6'7") taken in the draft.  He was drafted out of UNLV.
Nick Rumbelow (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - No earned runs allowed in six innings (has allowed three unearned runs).  Has a 7/1 K/BB ratio.
