Yankees Minor League Report 7/9/13: Marshall Struggles; Sanchez Homers; DePaula Has Rough Day; Campos Surging

Scranton (Defeated Rochester, 8-7)

Brent Lillibridge:  3-for-4, 2B (6), HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB - 20-for-58 with 12 XBH since joining the Yankees.  The last time he had any major league success was in 2011.
Randy Ruiz:  1-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS - Ruiz is a perfect example of why I think it is important for pitchers to spend some time in Triple-A.   Guys like Ruiz can sniff out a young pitcher's weakness very easily.   He has 9 HR in only 97 AB.
Addison Maruszak:  2-for-4, RS - .273/.352/.414 - A few days ago, I mentioned that Maruszak was having a good season but there really isn't a spot for him in the majors right now.  What was I smoking?  We have Alberto Gonzalez and Luis Cruz on the roster, for crying out loud.
Thomas Neal:  2-for-4, RBI, RS - .324/.399/.419 in 222 AB.  He didn't impress me much in his (very brief) tenure earlier this year, but he has been a beast in AAA.
Dan Johnson:  0-for-3, BB - .251/.383/.427
Josh Bell:  2-for-4, 2 RS

Brett Marshall:   4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K (5.99 ERA; 82.2 IP, 95 H, 59 R, 55 ER, 14 HR, 49 BB, 74 K, 1.58 GO/AO) - Was pitching much better up until this clunker.
Yoshinori Tateyama:  2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - 1.50 ERA in 12 IP with 12/1 K/BB ratio.
----------------------------
Tampa:  (Split 2 games with Dunedin (one was the completion of a suspended game).  Lost Game 1, 8-4.  Won Game 2, 7-0.  Had a no-hitter in Game 2 which was lost in the last inning)

Mason Williams was MIA for both games.

Gary Sanchez:   2-for-7, HR (13), 2 RBI, RS, SF - Can we bring him to the big leagues now?
Pete O'Brien:  3-for-7, 2 RBI, RS, SF, 2 E (at third base - both throwing) - Hitting .250 (14-for-56) since promotion.
Ben Gamel:  2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2 BB - Hitting .282 with 36 walks in 79 games.  Solid overall season (22 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR, 15-for-19 SB)
Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-4
Taylor Dugas:  3-for-6, 2B (1), RBI, 3 RS, BB, SB (2) - Just another day at the office.    The thing about Dugas is that you know exactly what you have.  He has only 21 career XBH in 425 career AB.  He's tiny, runs well, slaps the ball around, and takes walks.  I don't think his game will translate at the higher levels, but to date, it is working.

Rafael DePaula:  5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K -  Two rough outings after starting his High-A career with five shutout innings.

Joel De La Cruz:  5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K - 2.61 ERA in 48.1 innings with a 32/18 K/BB ratio.   At the age of 24 with hardly any minor league success until now, it is safe to assume we won't hear too much about him.
-------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Greenville, 2-1)

Cito Culver:  1-for-4, 2B (14), RBI - 12-for-34 in his last 10 games with five XBH.   Has raised his average to .228.
Dante Bichette:  2-for-4 - Back up over .200 at .201.  He's been going back and forth seemingly for the past month and a half or so.
Jake Cave:  1-for-4 - 12 hits in last 40 AB.  Hitting .270 in 267 AB with 29 XBH.
Greg Bird:  0-for-4, 3 K - 2-for-21 in July.
Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4 - Snaps 5-game hitting streak (9-for-18 during streak)

Jose Campos:   4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - Yankees continue to play it extra cautious with Campos, who only threw 55 pitches tonight.     Last 4 starts:  16 IP, 16 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 14 K.   Overall, he has a 3.75 ERA over 60 innings with a 55/12 K/BB ratio.     We must remember that he is coming off injury and has a previous high of only 81 innings (2011).
Brett Gerritse:  3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K - 4.50 ERA over 54 innings with 63/24 K/BB ratio.
James Pazos:   1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HR - First professional HR allowed (50.1 innings).    22-year old LHP drafted in the 13th round last year out of San Diego.
-----------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Connecticut, 7-5.  Of course they did - how can one section of New York beat an entire state?)

Brandon Thomas:  2-for-5, HR (2), RBI, 2 RS, SB (6) - Hitting only .209 but has drawn some walks and shown off some speed.
Isaias Tejada:  2-for-3, HR (2), 4 RBI, RS - Doubled his RBI output.  Hitting .242 in 62 AB.
Yeicok Calderon:  1-for-4, 2B (5), BB - After struggling in Charleston, he is predictably lighting it up for Staten Island.
Eric Jagielo:  0-for-4.   The end of the journey starts now.

Jairo Heredia:  5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K - 2.55 ERA in 24.2 innings with 28/4 K/BB ratio.  This is predictable.  True test comes when the Yankees move him back up.
