Yankees Minor League Report 7/11/14: Jose Pirela Collects Three Hits; Manny Banuelos Goes Wild; Mark Montgomery Returns

In case you missed it (not that you would care), former Yankees farmhand Brrett Marshall was recently released by the Reds.  Marshall was DFA'd this spring to make room for Carlos Beltran and was promptly picked up by the Cubs, who DFA'd him later in the spring.  The Reds picked him up from there.   He had an ugly 10.97 ERA in seven starts for the Reds' Triple-A affiliate in Louisville, allowing 29 hits and 27 (!!!!) walks in 21.1 innings.
----------------------
Scranton (Defeated Rochester, 5-1)

UTIL Jose Pirela:  3-for-4, 2B (15), RBI, 2 RS
Now 20-for-52 in July.   Interestingly enough, after walking ten times in 28 June games, he has yet to walk in July.  But why nitpick?  He has been unconscious for months.
2B Robert Refsnyder:  1-for-4, RBI
Played second base tonight; Pirela played RF.
C John Ryan Murphy:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K
The 26 Ks in 24 games is a bit eye popping.
C/1B Austin Romine:  3-for-4, 2 RBI, RS
Has been playing a lot of first (with Roller DHing) on the days he isn't giving Murphy a breather behind the plate.
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-3, BB, K
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, K
33 RBI in 75 games this season; 34 in 113 games last season.  Also has 21 XBH this year compared to 17 last year.
UTIL Adonis Garcia:  0-for-4, 2 K
Has played a little bit of third recently, which could be due to the fact that both Wheeler and Solarte are with the big club.

RHP Jairo Heredia (W, 1-0):  5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Had a 10.61 ERA in 9.1 IP at this level coming into this game, so nice to see.
Switch Pat Venditte:  2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Effectively mediocre.
RHP Egmer Escalona:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
10.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K since signing.
------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Akron, 5-4, in 10 innings after rallying to tie in the B-9th.  All that work for nothing, eh?)

3B Rob Segedin:  2-for-4, 2 2B (13), 2 RBI, RS, K
Six XBH in July, which is already more than he had in April, May, or June.   Since he is drawing his share of walks, adding some XBH power to the ledger makes him a bit interesting.
OF Ben Gamel:  0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K, CS (5)
Snaps 8-game hitting streak.   Still doing a nice job lately at this level overall.
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-3, RS, HBP, 2 K
You will see a wild pitch fest documented below - rest assured that Sanchez was the DH tonight.
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-0
Ejected for having a verbal dispute with an opposing hitter.   Gotta love that.
UTIL Zach Wilson:  1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS
Came into the game for O'Brien, and decided to act like O'Brien - at least for one AB
SS Ali Castillo:  1-for-2, RBI, K, HBP, CS (2)
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-5, 2 K
1B/3B/RF Tyler Austin:  0-for-4
Yes, I decided to lump these two together at the bottom of the list tonight - can you get any more disappointing?  Don't answer that.

LHP Manny Banuelos:  2.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 5 WP
FIVE wild pitches?   What was Ricky Vaughan's record again?   Rick Ankiel is available for therapeutic sessions.   Let's face it - yes, Banuelos is still bouncing back from his 5,125th injury since he joined the organization - but we need to see something that appears like progress soon, no?
RHP Taylor Garrison:  2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.49 ERA; 38.2 IP, 32 H, 17 R, 15 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 26 K
RHP Mark Montgomery:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Who?   OK, in all seriousness, this is his first game back off of the DL
RHP Manny Barreda:  2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
2.96 ERA; 48.2 IP, 42 H, 17 R, 16 ER, 4 HR, 25 BB, 54 K
Pretty good season overall - he is 25, has always had trouble finding that white thing right in front of the catcher, etc...but nobody is hyping him anyway.
LHP Ty Webb (L, 1-6);  2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Walk, WP, Runner moved to Third by next hitter, then scored on a grounder that I guess wasn't converted into a DP.  That is how you end up with a weird stat line like this.
4.04 ERA; 35.2 IP, 35 H, 16 R, 16 ER, 14 BB, 51 K since joining Trenton.  Has 68 K in 48.2 IP overall, which is obviously a nice rate.
--------------------
Tampa (Lost to Bradenton, 2-1)
1B Greg Bird:  2-for-4, K
The 21-year old has been solid this season, but not as spectacular as he was last season.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-3, BB, K
14-game hitting streak (19-for-57)
OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, K
.274/.418/.521 in 21 games
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-4, BB, 2 K
.305/.357/.394 in 371 AB
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, 2B (16), K
6-for-39 in July
OF Yeicok Calderon:  0-for-4, 4 K
Why are you carrying around a bat with a baseball-sized hole in it?
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, 3 K
Why are carrying a bat at all?
C Trent Garrison:  2-for-4, RBI, K

RHP Brett Gerritse (L, 3-4):  5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
23-year old has become a bit of an organizational type pitcher, filling in wherever he is needed. (Even made a 2-inning appearance for Scranton earlier this year)
------------------------------
Charleston was rained out.
--------------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Lowell, 5-4)

SS Vicente Conde:  2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB
Professional debut for Conde, who was drafted in the 9th round out of Vanderbilt.   Signed yesterday and thrown right into the action.   Scouts are divided on whether he can actually stay at SS in the long run, so keep that in mind.
2B/3B Ty McFarland: 1-for-4, 2B (10), BB, K
13 XBH in 23 games
OF Austin Aune:  2-for-5, 2B (7), RBI, RS, 2 K
Because even his good games have to contain a few strikeouts.
1B/OF Chris Breen:  1-for-4, 2B (6), BB, 2 K
CF Devyn Bolasky:  0-for-5, K
Hasn't had many clunkers in his brief (16 games) career
C Isaias Tejada:  1-for-5, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS
OF Nathan Mikolas:  2-for-4, RS, K

RHP David Palladino (W, 3-2):  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
4.55 ERA; 27.2 IP, 28 H, 19 R, 14 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 28 K
The 6'8" beast has been about as inconsistent as you would expect a young, tall pitcher to be.
RHP Jonathan Holder:  2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Andury Acevedo:  0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
Been a long time since I reported on him, and you see why.  Walked the bases loaded to start the B-9th, struck a hitter out, then walked in a run.   Regardless, he is a converted IF, so this is just nothing more than an experiment.  Now has 26 walks in 22 IP between Charleston/Staten Island.
LHP Rony Bautista (S, 3):  0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Cleaned up Acevedo's mess by striking out the final two hitters to seal the win.
