Yankees Minor League Report 7/5/13: Note on Robert Refsnyder; Gary Sanchez Collects 3 Hits; Dustin Fowler Hits Grand Slam; Jacob Lindgren Picks Up a Win

Scranton (Lost to Buffalo, 6-3)

OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-5, HR (13), RBI, RS, K
C John Ryan Murphy:  1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
2B Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-5, K
Where's your Superman cape tonight, jackass?   If he was any good, he'd be with the Yankees already.
By the way, I got a message in my mailbox from one of the "founders" of The Bronx View tonight - a tweet from Jed Weisberger (@jedleyq).   Bottom line seems to be that Refsnyder has to work on two things before a promotion:  His pivot on the double play and how to play the shifts that the Yankees' organization is employing.
UTIL Jose Pirela:  2-for-5, SB (11)
10-for-26 in six July games.
IF Yangveris Solarte:  3-for-3, 2B (1), BB
What did the Texas scouts not see in him, Jawwwwn?    I don't know, Suzyn - he has been fantastic.   I don't like stats, but he is hitting so well and his defense has been exceptional.  I hate stats, but he is hitting .320, Suzyn.    Stats aren't my thing - there are stats for EVERYTHING - but he leads the team in RBIs, Suzyn.  What a player!  Where would the Yankees be without SOLLLARRRRTTTEEE?
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-3, RS, BB
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-4, K, CS (2)
IF Scott Sizemore:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K
SS Carmen Angelini:  1-for-4
Do you realize that if something happens to Jeter/Ryan that Angelini is next on the depth chart with the loss of Anna?  Eek.

RHP Edgmer Escalona:  3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Francisco Rondon:  2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
1.56 ERA; 17.1 IP, 12 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 BB, 19 K
Could just be perception, but it just seems that whenever the Yankees decide to extend him, he ends up getting hammered.   Both runs came in his second inning of work.
RHP Diego Moreno: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Switch Pat Venditte (L, 2-3):  0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
There is a term for guys like Pat Venditte; I believe it is something like "non-prospect"
RHP Matt Daley:  2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
------------------------------------------
Trenton (Edged Out by New Hampshire, 3-1)

C Gary Sanchez:  3-for-4, 2B (17), K
17-for-41 in last 11 games.  Hey, he may have an attitude problem from time to time, but this kid remains one of the top prospects in the game.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS, 2 K
.285/.327/.384 in 354 AB.  8-for-17 start in July.   His career high in HRs is only four, but there could still be hope for future power given his strong doubles output.   For now, he has established himself as a legitimate #4 OF prospect who still has some ability to grow into more.
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, K
.227/.270/.483 in 203 AB here; .260/.299/.556 in 315 AB overall
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  0-for-4, 2 K
.250/.318/.358 in 240 AB.
OK, dude - I have been making fun of your 1-hit games as of late, but I will still take that over this!
3B Rob Segedin:  1-for-3, K
.248/.365/.378 in 238 AB
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-4
.214/.291/.288 in 309 pathetic AB

RHP Zach Nuding:  6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
4.33 ERA; 95.2 IP, 103 H, 50 R, 46 ER, 12 HR, 25 BB, 74 K
Pitching much better here (2.93 ERA in 55.1 IP) than he did in Scranton (6.25 ERA in 40.1 IP)
RHP Phil Wetherell (L, 0-2):  1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
LHP James Pazos:  0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 2 inherited RS
Inherited runners tonight aside, he has still pitched extremely well here.
-------------------
Tampa (Lost to Dunedin, 5-4)

OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB
14-for-49 since joining level with 14 runs batted in.  Has 59 runs batted in overall in 80 games, which I believe leads the organization.
CF Jake Cave:  3-for-5, RS
Nice bounce back after consecutive 0-for-5 games.   Still red-hot overall, as he is 19 for his last 50.
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-5, 2 K
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, 2B (18), BB, K
.278/.365/.410 in 295 AB.  I have remained skeptical all season, but the bottom line is that he has maintained his offense for most of the season.    His walk rate is up (11.6% entering today; career average of 9.9%), his K rate is down from last year (19.6%; 24.5% last year), etc.
SS Cito Culver:  2-for-5, RS, 2 K
.219/.291/.290.  The real battle in the Yankees' system is actually between Mason Williams and Cito Culver to see if either one has any of their three triple slash numbers over .300 by the end of the season.
OF Yeicok Calderon:  2-for-4, K, SB (1)
In case you were wondering, NO - stolen bases and speed in general are not a big part of his game.  To be exact, unless his power develops, nothing will be a big part of his game.
2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-4, K
You need to be one of those people who doesn't just see "half full" glasses - yours needs to be overflowing at the rim if you still have confidence in this guy.  I feel as if I have wasted years of my life covering his underachieving, injury-prone ass.

RHP Rafael DePaula:  6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
4.71 ERA; 72.2 IP, 77 H, 41 R, 38 ER, 4 HR, 32 BB, 85 K
Has been very impressive in last three starts (16.2 IP, 2 R) as he continues to bounce back from a dreadful 2-game stretch where he allowed 13 runs in three innings.
------------------------
Charleston (Crushed Rome, 9-1)

OF Dustin Fowler:  2-for-5, 3B (4), HR (7 - Grand Slam), 5 RBI, 2 RS
The 19-year old is establishing himself as a legitimate prospect.    He has 19 XBH in 42 games and has driven in 29 runs.  He doesn't walk very much at this time (9) but his power has to be impressing.
3B Miguel Andjuar:  2-for-3, 2B (13), 2 RS, BB
Average has been raised to .240.   He took a tumble in May after a decent April, but he has been hitting pretty well ever since.  Now 19-for-52 since the ASB.
SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-5, 2B (12), 2 RS, K
Recent struggles have dropped his slash to .258/.339/.324, so this game was badly needed.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-3, 2B (11), RS, K
18-for-55 since ASB.
OF Michael O'Neill: 0-for-3, 2 RS, BB, K, SB (23)
17-for-61 since ASB.  The 23-for-26 stolen base line is a bit surprising, I think.
C Eduardo de Oleo:  2-for-4, 3 RBI
He got off to a hot home run start before predictably slowing down.   He does have 28 RBI in 41 games...but more needs to be done for him to even be thought of as a legit prospect.
1B Mike Ford:  0-for-2, 2 BB
.279/.380/.426 in 244 AB
OF Mark Payton: 0-for-4, K
Professional debut for the 22-year old CF out of the University of Texas.  (7th round pick)   Very much smallish at 5'7", 165.

RHP Rookie Davis:  5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
4.96 ERA; 74.1 IP, 78 H, 45 R, 41 ER, 3 HR, 34 BB, 61 K
Not a great start, but pretty good.   He has alternated good and bad for the past five starts.
LHP Jacob Lindgren (W, 1-0);  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
First professional win.
RHP Angel Rincon (S, 1):  3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
4.50 ERA; 30 IP, 26 H, 17 R, 15 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 26 K
-----------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Hudson Valley, 4-3, in 10 innings)

C Luis Torrens:  3-for-5, 3B (2), RS
8-for-24 (.333) since joining level.    At 18, still young for this league.
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  2-for-5, 2 2B (7), RBI
Breaks 1-for-12 mini-slide.  You want college hitters to hit well when assigned to Staten Island after the draft, and McFarland has done a nice job overall.
1B Connor Spencer:  2-for-4, 2 2B (2), BB
6-for-20.  First two professional XBH
OF Nathan Mikolas:  1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
1B Bo Thompson: 0-for-4, K
Prospect known for taking walks and having some pop has done OK in the walks department (six in ten games), but has also yet to earn an extra base hit - heck, he only has four freakin hits in his ten games.
OF Austin Aune: 1-for-5, 3 K
.197/.300/.295 in 16 games with 24 Ks.  He is like Alfonso Soriano without the....the....the.....OK, he is simply just like Alfonso Soriano.
1B/OF Chris Breen:  0-for-5, 3 K
IF Jose Javier:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, 3 SB (4), CS (1)
Didn't hit well in the GCL last year, but the speed/basestealing ability seems legit; stole 11 in 12 attempts last year

RHP Jordan Foley: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
20-year old hasn't allowed a run in eight innings.   What, is he facing the Yankees' lineup?
RHP Andy Beresford:  3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
14.2 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 11 K for Staten Island; lit up like a Christmas tree in Charleston earlier this year
RHP Conor Mullee:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Wonder what it is like for a player this old (26) to hang around with kids who are in their teens and early 20s?
