Yankees Minor League Report 7/13/14: Rob Segedin Is Rolling; Jaron Long's Surprise Success Continues; Jake Cave: 3 Hits; Dante Bichette's Streak Reaches 16

Both Pete O'Brien and Luis Severino have left the Yankees.....no, not in a trade for Ian Kennedy.  Rather, they were selected for the Futures Game, which is a nice little honor for any minor league prospect.    Both earned their slots - Severino courtesy of pitching lights out in A-Ball.  For O'Brien, it has been all about the home run - and one thing you will read about his home runs is that a majority of them are no-doubters.

In the game, Severino tossed a scoreless inning, striking out one.  O'Brien did what he usually does when he doesn't hit a home run, going 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts.

Scranton was postponed due to rain today.

Trenton (Defeated Akron, 5-1)

3B Rob Segedin:  3-for-4, 2B (14)
.265/.377/.398 in 264 AB.  Now 17-for-42 in July with six doubles and a home run.  The power seems to be showing up now after a season filled with singles and walks.  Bottom line for Segedin right now is that the third base situation in the Bronx is not very good, the best third base prospects are a level or two behind him, and there isn't much blocking him in Triple-A either.  In other words, if Solarte and Wheeler can get a shot, why can't Segedin?
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, 2B (13), 2 RBI
.209/.286/.276 in 340 AB
The defense is supposedly as good now (if not better) as it has ever been.  There is no doubting that aspect of his game - but his offense is so atrocious that you feel as if his gift for shagging fly balls is going to be forever wasted.
3B/OF Tyler Austin:  1-for-4, RBI
.244/.306/.356 in 270 AB.
Just hasn't been able to get on track this season.  If he is still around after 2014, we'll see if the wrist can recover to the point where he has a bounce back in 2015....stranger things have happened.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-3, 2 RS, BB, SB (12)
.284/.328/.378; 12-for-17 SB
16-for-47 in July
SS Ali Castillo: 1-for-4, RBI, RS
.226/.278/.287 in 261 AB.  The 25-year old isn't as far down the SS depth chart as one would think - and I don't mean that as a good thing.

RHP Jaron Long (W, 2-0):  6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
12 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 9 K since joining level; 87.1 IP, 73 H, 27 R, 21 ER, 3 HR, 12 BB, 81 K overall
Is he the next Chase Whitley-like surprise?   Of course, at least Whitley was actually drafted. Long, who pitched for Ohio State, didn't get drafted - the Yankees followed him to the Cape Cod League, were impressed, and gave him a contract.  Yes, he is the son of hitting coach Kevin Long - that may have earned him an extra look.  But it didn't earn him these promotions.   He has been fun to follow this season, regardless of his outcome.  He can touch the low-90s with his fastball (but is more consistently in the 88-89 range) and also features a cutter, sinker, and change.
LHP James Pazos (S, 4):  2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
1.40 ERA; 19.1 IP, 14 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 21 K since joining level
Watching video of Pazos recently, he has a really interesting delivery, which probably helps keep left-handed hitters off-balance.   Don't think of him as just a LOOGY at this point, though - his minor league splits are fairly even, and even tilt slightly towards being better vs right-handed bats.   He throws in the low-90s (can dial it into the 92-93 range) with a good slider and a decent change.

Tampa (Defeated Bradenton, 4-2)

CF Jake Cave:  3-for-4, 2B (18), 2 RS, SB (10)
7-game hitting streak
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, K
16-game hitting streak
OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, 2B (3), RS, 2 K
8-for-35 in last ten games
SS Cito Culver:  2-for-4, 2 RBI, RS
2B Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-3, K
UTIL Claudio Custodio:  3-for-3, CS (1)
First CS in 19 attempts

RHP Travis Hissong:  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K
Would you have taken him in the "Who will be the first 2014 signee to make it to Tampa?" pool?  Of course, there are reasons why.  Bryan Mitchell was scratched from his Trenton start on Saturday so he could join the Yankees in Baltimore.  Because of this, Tampa's scheduled starter Dan Camarena needed to be promoted to Trenton to take Mitchell's spot - and that is where Hissong comes into play to make a start for Tampa.  He was a non-drafted free agent and will be sent back down to the lower minors.
LHP Ramon Benjamin:  3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
3.95 ERA; 13.2 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 14 K
RHP Cesar Vargas (W, 1-0):  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
18 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 20 K since joining level.

Charleston (Defeated Savannah, 5-0)

OF Mark Payton:  3-for-5, 2B (2), 2 RBI, K, CS (2)
9-for-26 in first eight professional games.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-3, RS, BB, SB (15)
11 straight games with exactly one hit; 15-game hitting streak overall
1B Mike Ford:  1-for-4, HR (10), RBI, RS
.276/.378/.437 in 268 AB.
3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-3, RS, BB, K
Just like with Katoh, early season returns pointed to a possible Staten Island trip in his future.   But he is now 11-for-37 in July and 23-for-73 since the All-Star Break with 13 walks in 22 games.
SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-4, K
.261/.344/.325 in 329 AB
OF Dustin Fowler:  1-for-5
.258/.293/.479 in 194 AB
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-4, 2B (16), RS, K
OF Brandon Thomas:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K, SB (9)
First game since 7/4, not that anyone noticed.   Hitting .149/.259/.213 in 183 mostly horrible AB

LHP Caleb Smith (W, 5-7):  6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K
3.10 ERA; 78.1 IP, 60 H, 33 R, 27 ER, 4 HR, 35 BB, 80 K
You know the story:  Started hot, cooled down significantly, but is now starting to throw a little bit better again.
RHP Philip Walby:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
4.26 ERA; 31.2 IP, 22 H, 21 R, 15 ER, 0 HR, 27 BB, 46 K
RHP Eric Ruth:  1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
4.15 ERA; 65 IP, 62 H, 33 R, 30 ER, 1 HR, 23 BB, 64 K
