Yankees Minor League Report 7/7/14: Pete O'Brien Homers Twice, Bryan Mitchell Pitches Well in Trenton Victory

In the GCL today, Ty Hensley made his latest start, lasting three innings, giving up two runs (both HRs) on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts....SS Jorge Mateo went 0-for-2 with a strikeout and was taken out of the game.  Let us hope it is nothing serious....3B Eric Jagielo continued his rehab, going 1-for-5 with an RBI.    He is 4-for-12 in four games...

Scranton

Game against Charlotte suspended in the 4th inning.  Charlotte has a 6-3 lead.   Since I am sure people are curious, Robert Refsnyder is 1-for-1 with a walk.
-----------------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Reading, 10-3)

C/1B Pete O'Brien:  2-for-3, 2 HR (17), 2 RBI, 4 RS, BB
27 HR, 60 RBI, and 55 runs scored in 84 games between Tampa/Trenton.   Seems to be back on a bit of a hot streak (11-for-28 over last seven games)
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-4, RBI, BB, K
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-5, RBI
Modest 5-game hitting streak. 10-for-27 in July.
1B/3B/RF Tyler Austin:  0-for-5, K
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-1, K
Left game early.
UTIL Jose Toussen:  2-for-3, 2B (1), 3 RBI, RS, K
Very versatile, but not very good.
C Francisco Arcia:  1-for-4, RBI, RS
First game back at this level after spending 30 games in Scranton (.257/.296/.297).  With his presence, O'Brien's catching duties will likely be reduced even more.
SS Ali Castillo:  2-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB, SB (6)
As you can see, a lot of the offense tonight (beyond O'Brien) came from the non-prospects sitting at this level.

RHP Bryan Mitchell (W, 2-5):  6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HR
4.84 ERA; 61.1 IP, 64 H, 36 R, 33 ER, 6 HR, 29 BB, 60 K
Pitching a tad better lately.  The Yankees would love to see him take a step forward.
LHP Cesar Cabral:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
He has settled down a bit lately.   Has a 19/5 K/BB ratio in 12.2 IP in last ten appearances.
LHP James Pazos:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
40.1 IP, 36 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 49 K
---------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Dunedin, 9-3)

OF Aaron Judge:  1-for-4, RBI, RS, K
60th RBI in 82 games.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, 2B (19), 2 K
Now has a 10-game hitting streak (12-for-41)
1B Greg Bird:  1-for-4
.273/.361/.418 in 194 AB
CF Jake Cave: 1-for-4, 2B (16), RS, K

2B Angelo Gumbs:  0-for-2, BB
6-for-38 slide

LHP Conner Kendrick (L, 3-5):  2.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
5.48 ERA; 44.1 IP, 58 H, 30 R, 27 ER, 1 HR, 18 BB, 34 K
RHP Cesar Vargas:  2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
-------------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Greenville, 4-3)

SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-5, 2B (13), RBI
OF Dustin Fowler:  1-for-4, RBI, BB
6-game hitting streak (8-for-27, 2 HR, 8 RBI)
OF Mark Payton:  2-for-4, 2 K
Good to see the organization continue to give reps to Fowler in center (Payton played RF tonight)
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-3, BB, K
10-game hitting streak (13-for-36)
OF Michael O'Neill:  2-for-5, RS, K, CS (4)
1B Reymond Nunez:  1-for-3, 2B (8), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-4, K

RHP Brady Lail:  6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
3.82 ERA; 92 IP, 101 H, 45 R, 39 ER, 16 BB, 88 K
In case you were wondering, he tossed 61.2 innings last season.  After a hot start to the season, he struggled in June, but hopefully he can close out his season on a high note.
LHP Evan Rutckyj (W, 2-0):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
First appearance since 6/29.   Has pitched very well here after a poor start in Tampa (15/12 K/BB ratio in 12.1 IP there; 23/7 in 14.1 IP here)
-----------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Split DH with Aberdeen, winning 3-2 before losing 4-1)

C Luis Torrens:  1-for-3, 2B (2), RS
Interestingly, he didn't play in Game 1....and DH'd in Game 2.
OF Nathan Mikolas:  1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, RS
There is some potential in his bat, but he is off to a rough start here.  Had a .760 OPS in 56 games in the GCL last year.
CF Devyn Bolasky:  2-for-4, 2B (3)
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  2-for-6, RBI, BB, K
1B/OF Chris Breen:  3-for-7, 2B (5), 2 RBI, K
IF Jose Javier:  1-for-5, RS, BB, 2 K
Thairo Estrada has missed a few games in a row now; Javier has been his replacement at SS.
RF Austin Aune:  1-for-6, K
2B Jake Anderson:  0-for-3, RS, K
7th round pick out of HS in 2010 hasn't developed much.
1B Connor Spencer:  0-for-3

RHP Matt Borens:  4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
8.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
Second consecutive nice outing after a terrible first start.  6'7" RHP out of Eastern Illinois.
RHP Sean Carley: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Staten Island debut for Carley, who supposedly looks just like HBO star Kenny Powers.  Note that I don't know who Kenny Powers is.   14th round pick in this year's draft out of West Virginia.

RHP Sam Agnew-Wieland:  3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
RHP Matt Wotherspoon:  2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR
2.89 ERA; 9.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 6 K
LHP Ethan Carnes:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
12.1 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 13 K
