Yankees Minor League Report 7/2/14: Eric Jagielo Returns; Shane Greene Tosses 6 Shutout Innings

Down in the GCL, Eric Jagielo made a rehab appearance today, going 2-for-2 with a home run in a 8-0 victory (the GCL-1 squad is now 10-1).    Jagielo was off to a fine start in Tampa before injuring his side, putting up a .256/.339/.500 slash with 10 home runs in 156 AB.    He should make his way back there shortly....Ty Hensley tossed three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three.  I don't know what the grand plan is for Hensley, but hopefully he can get to a full-season league this year.....Austin DeCarr earned his first professional victory by tossing two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two in the process...

Scranton
(Swept by Buffalo, 1-0 and 3-1.  No, the New York Yankees did not fly to Buffalo to take their place...)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-7, 2 K
UTIL Jose Pirela:  3-for-7, 2B (13), 2 K, E (7)
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-7, K
C John Ryan Murphy:  0-for-4, K
OF Taylor Dugas:  3-for-5, 3B (1), RBI, BB, CS (1)
At least someone came to play today...
1B Kyle Roller: 0-for-6, BB, 3 K
SS Dean Anna:  1-for-6, 2 K
IF Scott Sizemore:  2-for-3

RHP Shane Greene:  6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 7 K
4.61 ERA; 66.1 IP, 79 H, 39 R, 34 ER, 3 HR, 26 BB, 57 K
Threw seven scoreless innings in previous start, so perhaps he is finally getting into a groove.
RHP Matt Daley (L, 1-2):  1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
3.09 ERA; 23.1 IP, 27 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 HR, 6 BB, 34 K

LHP Nik Turley (L, 0-1):  3.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 2 K
Three guesses on what did him in today.
RHP Edgmer Escalona:  2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Who is this clown, you ask?  Well, thank you for asking.     He has actually thrown 78 games in the big leagues (not in the Pete Rose way), compiling a 4.50 ERA in 100 innings for Colorado.    Judging by fangraphs, he is a fairly hard thrower, averaging 93.4 on his fastball in his career.  Regardless, who cares - he might get called up because of his experience at some point (heck, Jim Miller is in the majors for crying out loud), but there isn't much to write home about.
---------------
Trenton (Lost to Portland, 8-6)

C Gary Sanchez:  2-for-4, 2B (16), 3 RBI, RS
14-for-37 in last ten games.
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-3, BB, K
Had a little stretch a while ago where he was actually taking a few walks.  It didn't last.   After hitting .198 in 101 June AB, he is now 1-for-8 in July.
1B/3B/RF Tyler Austin:  1-for-3, RBI, HBP, CS (2)
Fifth straight game with one hit.   Hitting .254 overall on the season and is pretty much in a holding pattern.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-4, RS, BB
4-for-39 slide.  Was hitting well for a while..but has fallen right back down again.
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-4, 2 K

LHP CC Sabathia (L, 0-1):  3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Bryan Mitchell:  5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
5.10 ERA; 54.2 IP, 58 H, 34 R, 31 ER, 5 HR, 26 BB, 55 K
---------------
Charleston (Lost to Savannah, 7-4)

OF Dustin Fowler:  1-for-5, HR (6), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Fowler didn't hit a home run in 30 games last year in the GCL (his professional debut).  He now has six in 39 games for Charleston.  When the Yankees drafted him last year, there was talk about his left-handed power potential - and so far, so good.   The walks obviously need help (hasn't walked in 13 games since the All-Star Break).
3B Miguel Andujar:  1-for-2, 2B (11), RS, 2 BB, K, E (21)
14-for-41 since All-Star Break.  You just never know when a prospect is going to "click".  He was dreadful in May (.522 OPS in 27 games) before starting to turn things around a bit in June. (.713 OPS in 24 games).
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-4, 3 K
The strikeouts are still insane (93 in 70 games), but other aspects of his game have improved lately.
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-5, 2B (15), RS, 3 K
1B Mike Ford:  0-for-4, 2 K
UTIL John Murphy:  2-for-4, RS, K

RHP Brady Lail:  4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, HR
3.77 ERA; 86 IP, 96 H, 42 R, 36 ER, 6 HR, 15 BB, 84 K
Hasn't been quite as sharp lately as he was earlier in the season.  Could be hitting a bit of a wall, as his previous high inning total was 61.2, set last year.
RHP Angel Rincon (L, 1-2):  2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
LHP Jacob Lindgren:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Charleston debut.  We'll obviously take the striking out the side thing.   But giving up a run at this level already proves he is a flop.
--------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Aberdeen, 9-5)

1B Connor Spencer:  2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS
SS Thairo Estrada: 1-for-5, RBI, 2 K, SB (8)
Has pretty much played as advertised.  Solid player without anything really flashy to his game.
1B/OF Chris Breen:  1-for-5, RBI, RS
C Luis Torrens:  1-for-4, 2 RS, BB, 2 K
4-for-15
2B/3B Ty McFarland:  1-for-5, RS, 2 K
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-1, RS, 2 BB, K, SB (2)
2B Jose Javier:  1-for-3, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 2 K
First XBH of season (26 AB)
OF Austin Aune:  0-for-4, RS, BB, 4 K
24 strikeouts in 61 AB....the more things change...
3B Renzo Martini:  1-for-4, 3B (1), 3 RBI, RS, 2 K
Now 5-for-45 (.111).

RHP Jordan Cote:  4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Really struggling this season.  Has allowed 30 runs (26 earned) in only 36.2 innings with 27/13 K/BB ratio.
RHP Conor Mullee: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Missed both the 2011 and 2013 seasons, and only threw five innings in 2012.  He does have 13 strikeouts in nine innings this year (power relief is his thing), but being 26 and missing essentially three years of development time is not really a good thing - especially if you are 26 and stuck in Staten Island.
