Yankees Minor League Report 6/11/14: Robert Refsnyder Hitless; Caleb Smith Continues to Struggle

Both Scranton and Tampa had the night off.  Poor Robert Refsnyder.  He is hitting the cover off the ball, but because of the promotion, he got two days off this week (Trenton was off on Monday, now Scranton on Wednesday)

Trenton (Lost to Richmond, 10-4)

CF Mason Williams:  2-for-5, RS, K, CS (3)
14-for-41 in last ten games.
C/1B/RF Pete O'Brien: 0-for-3, BB
Caught tonight.
3B Rob Segedin: 1-for-5, 2B (6), 2 RBI
1B/3B/RF Tyler Austin: 0-for-4, 3 K
6-for-34 with 13 Ks in June.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
Ups his hitting streak to eight games.
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-1, BB, 2 HBP
The kid is 5'9" with absolutely no power to be afraid of; yet, he gets hit twice in the same game.  13-for-29 in last ten games with seven walks.
C Francisco Cervelli:  0-for-2, RS, 2 BB
Played first base tonight.  Rehab continues - he was demoted to Trenton only because they are home (Scranton is about to go on a road trip)

RHP Graham Stoneburner:  5 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 HR
LHP Ty Webb:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
3.72 ERA; 19.1 IP, 20 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 0 HR, 10 BB, 30 K since promotion.
Listed at 6'6", Webb's strikeout rates are very strong, but don't think of him as a big guy who throws 95-97 heat.  He sits in the 91-92 range, and also features a change and slider.
RHP Phil Wetherell:  1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
LHP Cesar Cabral:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
----------------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Greenville, 6-3.  Aaron Judge did not play, so let the speculation begin on what that may mean.  I think it is just a routine day off, even though the All-Star Break does start on Monday.  Shortstop Tyler Wade also had the night off.)

OF Michael O'Neill: 2-for-4, 2 2B (9), RBI, RS
OF Dustin Fowler:  2-for-4, 2B (3), RBI
18-for-80 with seven XBH.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-3, 2B (7), RS, K
In case you are wondering, there has been a slight - and I mean SLIGHT - uptick in his offense.  Still only hitting .184.
OF Brandon Thomas:  0-for-3, 2 K
He is just saving up his hits for when he reaches the majors.
UTIL John Murphy:  0-for-3, SF, RBI
C Kale Sumner:  0-for-4, 2 K
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-4
Before the season began, there was a lot of talk that Andujar could be a breakout candidate - this is not to say he is a flop (he is only 19...and was born in March, so he is very young for this league), but he has most definitely not broken out of anything.  Hitting .218 on the season.
1B Reymond Nunez:  1-for-4, 2B (3), RS, 2 K

LHP Caleb Smith (L, 4-6):  3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, HR
3.68 ERA; 58.2 IP, 48 H, 26 R, 24 ER, 4 HR, 27 BB, 61 K
Struggles continue.  He has eclipsed last year's innings total (though not really if you factor in his college innings).  Anyway, just have to hope he has run into a bit of dead arm, or the organization has him working on something, etc.
LHP Omar Luis:  2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
We talk a lot about "pitchability" when it comes to Yankees prospects.  They seem to target pitchers who have advanced pitching mentalities - in terms of setting up hitters, etc.  Luis is the polar opposite - a pure upside lottery ticket with four pitches (including a fastball that can touch the mid-90s), but without any real command of them and no knowledge of setting up batters.  There are a lot of pieces to put together, but if he does, he can develop into something very interesting.
RHP Giovanny Gallegos:  2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
5.48 ERA; 42.2 IP, 50 H, 32 R, 26 ER, 4 HR, 10 BB, 41 K
