Yankees Minor League Report 6/15/14: Robert Refsnyder Collects Two Hits; Dustin Fowler Continues Hot Streak; Ian Clarkin Tosses Five Shutout Innings

The Yankees have released RHP Graham Stoneburner and RHP Brian Gordon. Stoneburner was once an intriguing prospect that was crushed by injuries.  Gordon has been hanging around baseball forever, and even made two starts for the Yankees back in 2011.

Scranton (Lost to Columbus, 11-3)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-4, 3B (1), RS, 2 K
4-for-20 since joining level with no walks and seven strikeouts.
IF Corban Joseph:  3-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS
.230/.274/.319.
I wonder if guys like Joseph kicked themselves after the Yankees let Cano go.  Not that his fall was entirely his fault; he did suffer injuries to his shoulders.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, K
IF Scott Sizemore:  2-for-4, 2B (9), RS
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-4, K
C Francisco Arcia:  0-for-3, RBI, BB, K
.264/.312/.310 in 25 games as a Scranton backup.
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  1-for-4, RBI, 2 K

RHP Joel De La Cruz (L, 2-5):  4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR
4.06 ERA; 44.1 IP, 49 H, 30 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 12 BB, 25 K
LHP Francisco Rondon:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K
RHP Heath Bell:  1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
If the entire bullpen came down with food poisoning tonight, Bell may just get called up....to mop up the clubhouse.
RHP Preston Claiborne:  0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
------------------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to New Britain, 6-2)
1B/3B/RF Tyler Austin:  2-for-3, RS
.247/.320/.360 in 178 AB.    Just hasn't been able to get any momentum going at all this season (.679 OPS in both April and May; .680 so far in June).  Always remember that while many players recover from wrist surgeries or Tommy John surgeries, etc...some never regain their form.  I am not saying that is Austin yet, but we shouldn't just assume that one day he will wake up and the bat will be there again.
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-4
.309/.422/.448 in 165 AB for the 5'9" OF out of Alabama.
C Francisco Cervelli:  1-for-4, K
4-for-32 on his rehab; has spent some time at first base.   Likely to be activated fairly soon, perhaps as early as the Toronto series.
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-4, K
.235/.278/.551 in 136 AB for Trenton with 32 strikeouts and seven walks.
OF Ben Gamel:  0-for-4
.281/.325/.361 in 285 AB.
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-4
.228/.359/.350 in 180 AB
UTIL Ali Castillo: 1-for-3, 2B (7), 2 RBI
.209/.256/.257 in 191 AB
C Tyson Blaser:  1-for-3, RS
The Thunder is actually carrying four players who can catch right now:  Blaser, O'Brien, Cervelli, and that Sanchez phantom.

RHP Bryan Mitchell (L, 1-5):  5.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR
5.44 ERA; 44.2 IP, 48 H, 29 R, 27 ER, 3 HR, 19 BB, 47 K
RHP Phil Wetherell:  1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
24-year old hasn't been pitching well since his promotion, so this is nice to see.
LHP Aaron Dott:  1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
3.42 ERA; 23.2 IP, 16 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 16 K
---------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Lexington, 10-3.   They were down 1-0 entering the 7th, then had a bit of an offensive explosion)

OF Dustin Fowler:  2-for-5, 3B (3), HR (3 - Grand Slam), 4 RBI, RS
At first, he looked like he may be a bit over his head here, starting 10-for-48 with 17 strikeouts.  He has definitely turned it on since then, and is now 14-for-48 (.292) with five multi-hit games in his last seven games played.  The 19-year old is a high upside bat that is really impressing at the moment.
SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
Upped his hitting streak to seven (9-for-29).  Also has six walks during the streak.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB (12)
Seems to have avoid Staten Island assignment (for now).  The bat has come to life a tad, but nothing I would call a true hot streak.
OF Michael O'Neill:  0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
CF Brandon Thomas:  2-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RS, BB
Yes, he actually can hit the ball every time June 15th falls on a Sunday.
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-4, 2 RS, 2 K
C Kale Sumner:  0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K

LHP Ian Clarkin:  5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
3.67 ERA; 41.2 IP, 43 H, 19 R, 17 ER, 4 HR, 8 BB, 42 K
Have to love that K/BB ratio...
LHP Omar Luis (W, 2-2):  3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
6.04 ERA; 22.1 IP, 23 H, 17 R, 15 ER, 3 HR, 17 BB, 13 K
RHP Eric Ruth:  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
----------------------------------
Staten Island

2B Ty McFarland:  2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, BB
22-year old left-handed bat was selected in the 10th round out of James Madison in this year's draft.
SS Thairo Estrada:  0-for-7, RS, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (1)
C/OF Collin Slaybaugh:  0-for-3, RS, BB
Drafted in the 26th round out of Washington State as a catcher, Slaybaugh actually played center field tonight.  His versatility and decent left-handed bat is what could make him a prospect someday; at the very least, every organization likes to have versatile "organizational" guys they can use to fill in any gaps.
C Isaias Tejada:  0-for-3, K
Beware of GCL superstars!  Tejada stormed onto the season in 2011, hitting .331/.404/.568 in 148 GCL ABs.  Since then?  Hasn't been able to get out of Staten Island.
RF Austin Aune:  1-for-8, 2B (1), RBI, 2 K
1B Chris Breen:  2-for-5, RBI, BB, 2 K
1B Bo Thompson:  0-for-3, BB
Thompson may become a fun prospect to watch.  The 13th round pick out of The Citadel is known as a patience/power guy who will not hit for much average.   List at 5'10" and a whopping 255 pounds, he supposedly did "slide" a bit in the draft.
OF Nathan Mikolas:  0-for-3, BB
1B Bubba Jones:  0-for-3, K
I have been waiting all year for a Bubba Jones sighting!  The 21-year old hit .284/.348/.393 in 211 AB here last season.  Left-handed bat was a 7th round pick out of high school in 2012.
2B Jose Javier:  1-for-2, BB

RHP Sam Agnew-Wieland:  2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
22-year old pitched to a 3.72 ERA in 38.2 IP at this level last year with a 42/17 K/BB ratio.  24th round pick in 2013.
RHP Chad Taylor:  2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K
23-year old was a non-drafted free agent signing last year.  Had a 1.19 ERA in 30.1 IP with 26/9 K/BB ratio.
RHP Jose Pena (W, 1-0):  3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
23-year old spent four years in the DSL before making GCL debut in 2013, posting a 4.01 ERA in 24.2 IP.

RHP Cale Coshow:   3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
6'5", 260.  Do you get the sense that the Yankees targeted big pitchers in last year's draft?   Palladino (6'8", 235), Beresford (6'6", 200), etc.  Anyway, he compiled a 3.76 ERA in 40.2 IP at this level last year with a 36/22 K/BB ratio.     Coshow was once a prized high school recruit who went to Oklahoma, but didn't pitch very much when he was there.  He transferred to Oklahoma Christian (Baseball factory, it is not), where he established some value.  Anyway, he has his share of conditioning issues to go along with a mid-90s fastball, a curve, and a change.   There is something to work with here (hard to teach mid-90s heat), but he has a lot to work on.
RHP Manolo Reyes: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
He is already 24 years old.  He pitched in the DSL in 2009 (10.24 ERA), disappeared, signed with the Yankees, and put up a 3.32 ERA in 21.2 IP with a 25/20 K/BB ratio at the same level last year.   This may be the first and last time you read about him from me!
