Yankees Minor League Report 6/12/14: Gary Sanchez Benched; Robert Refsnyder Truly Goes Hitless; Aaron Judge Soon to be Promoted?; Brady Lail's Latest

Trenton catcher Gary Sanchez has been benched for a few games due to arriving at the ballpark late on Wednesday.

Scranton (Lost to Columbus, 5-4)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  0-for-4, 2 K
Breaks his torrid streak of multi-hit games.  This is what I like about a hitter getting some exposure to Triple-A:  Columbus threw Kyle Davies and Mark Lowe in this game.  Davies was a terrible major league pitcher, but has been around the Triple-A block more than a few times and likely knows how to pitch, even if he isn't very successful doing it versus the best hitters in the world.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  2-for-4, HR (9), RBI, RS, K
I think the Yankees are wasting their time with Soriano at this point.  He is very streaky, as we know - but he isn't going to hit any kind of streak platooning in the outfield.   Almonte isn't a perfect platoon partner, as he is a switch-hitter in name only (he sucks vs. LHP, to put it bluntly).   I would just like to see what he can do with consistent major league playing time.  He sure does well enough here.
IF Scott Sizemore:  1-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
C Austin Romine:  1-for-3, RS, K
Was 20-for-64 (.313) in May and is 7-for-28 (.250) in June.  Bottom line is that he seems to be way past his awful April start.
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, K, SB (8)
First base was his landing spot tonight.
1B Kyle Roller:  2-for-4, 2B (8), RS, K
Hitting .311 for Scranton (33-for-106) with 15 XBH.
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  0-for-4, K

LHP Jeremy Bleich (L, 0-1):  6 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HR
Triple-A debut for the 26-year old (27 on 6/18).  Pitched to a 3.51 ERA in 66.2 innings for Trenton with a 55/22 K/BB ratio.   He was throwing well until the 7th inning tonight, when he allowed a run and left the game with a few runners on base, both of which scored off of Danny Burawa.
RHP Danny Burawa:  2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
3.18 ERA; 22.2 IP, 20 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 11 BB, 27 K
Struggles continue overall for Burawa, who has given up five runs on eight hits in five June innings. He has allowed at least one run in five of his last six outings.

Trenton (Defeated Richmond, 4-3)

CF Mason Williams:  1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, RS, BB
14-for-41 in June as he continues his rebound from a miserable start.
C/1B Pete O'Brien: 2-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
He hasn't become a walking machine, but any uptick is nice to see.  Now has eight in 32 games for Trenton after walking four times in 30 games in Tampa.
OF Ben Gamel: 0-for-4
Snaps 8-game hitting streak.
3B Rob Segedin:  0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
31 walks and 31 strikeouts in 48 games.   Nice OBP - but power hasn't been there.
OF Taylor Dugas: 2-for-4, 2B (10), RBI
12-for-28 in last ten games with six walks.
C Francisco Cervelli:  1-for-4, RS, K

LHP Matt Tracy: 6.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
3.82 ERA; 61.1 IP, 70 H, 29 R, 26 ER, 3 HR, 25 BB, 35 K   Also allowed five runs on 11 hits in 13 IP for Scranton.
RHP Jairo Heredia (W, 2-0):  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Demoted back here after a three-game disaster in Scranton.
LHP James Pazos (S, 1):  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
29.1 IP, 31 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 41 K combined between Tampa/Trenton
-----------------------------------
Tampa (Swept by Clearwater, 8-5 and 3-0.  Clearwater is terrible.     Tampa is 31-36, and is still 14.5 games ahead of Clearwater.  You can't predict baseball, Suzyn)

SS Cito Culver:  1-for-5, HR (2), RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
9-for-30 in last ten games with four XBH and nine walks.  Could be a temporary blip, but we can dream, right?  Average sits at .243 with 26 walks in 62 games.
1B Greg Bird:  1-for-5, 2B (9), RS, 2 BB
The walks are starting to come again.  Let us hope the bat follows.
CF Jake Cave:  3-for-7, BB, K
6-for-34 slide entering DH.
3B Dante Bichette:  2-for-7, RS, 3 K
OF Yeicok Calderon:  2-for-6, 2B (3), 3B (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
Calderon actually hit 15 home runs while driving home 66 last season, though he also struck out 125 times in 413 AB.    He is 22 years old.
1B Matt Snyder:  2-for-4, RBI, RS

RHP Rafael DePaula (L, 2-4):  2 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, HR
4.97 ERA; 54.1 IP, 57 H, 33 R, 30 ER, 2 HR, 28 BB, 69 K
This is what you call a drubbing - and getting drubbed by a 15-50 team is, obviously, not a good thing.
RHP Brett Gerritse:  3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

RHP Jaron Long (L, 0-2): 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
10 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 2 BB, 8 K since promotion from Charleston.
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
14 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 17 K since promotion from Charleston.
--------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Lexington, 6-4)

RF Aaron Judge:  2-for-4, 2B (15), SF, 2 RBI, K
His coach at Fresno State has indicated that he will be promoted to Tampa after the Sally League All-Star Game.  14-for-35 in June with eight XBH.   I personally cannot wait to see what he does against stiffer competition.
SS Tyler Wade:  2-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
Hitting .266 with 26 walks and 58 strikeouts in 59 games.  The teenager will likely stick here instead of going to Staten Island is my guess.
C Eduardo de Oleo:  2-for-3, HR (9), RBI, RS, BB
Nine HR in 30 games for the 21-year old.   The HR power is surprising, but he did have ten doubles in 37 games in the GCL last season.
OF Dustin Fowler:  0-for-4
2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-for-3, BB, 2 K
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-5, 2 RS, K, SB (20)
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-3, SAC

RHP Brady Lail:  6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
3.49 ERA; 69.2 IP, 77 H, 31 R, 27 ER, 3 HR, 13 BB, 71 K
The 20-year old is making his way up the prospects list.    Fastball/sinker/knuckle-curve/change guy who consistently sits in the 92-93 range.  The breaking pitches are considered to be above average.  Can he get to Tampa this year?  Not impossible.
LHP Rony Bautista (L, 0-1):  0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
4.76 ERA; 12.1 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 10 K
