Yankees Minor League Report 6/21/14: Nik Turley & Ty Hensley Return; Latest from Ian Clarkin; 3 Hits for Robert Refsnyder; Greg Bird is Rolling Along

In the GCL today, Nik Turley made his first appearance of the season, lasting four innings while giving up three runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  The 24-year old went 11-8 with a 3.79 ERA between Trenton/Scranton in 2013 (mostly Trenton) with a 141/76 K/BB ratio over 145 innings.  Turley was actually released earlier this season (procedural move to get him off of the 40-man roster) before resigning with the club.  He was out the first half of the season with an arm injury, and should make his way to Scranton in the coming weeks....Ty Hensley also made his first appearance of the year in this game.  He lasted 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.  The 20-year old was the Yankees' first round pick in 2012, but missed all of 2013 due to injury.  In 2012, he pitched only 12 innings after signing.  He is obviously well behind on his development schedule, but the talent is probably still there.
-------------------------------------
Scranton (Defeated Pawtucket, 4-0)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  3-for-4, 2B (3), RS
Raised his AAA batting average 50 points to .293.   Third straight game with a double.     He just refuses to slow down for any long stretch of time.  After an 0-for-12 stretch 6/12-6/14, he is 10-for-25 with five walks.
C John Ryan Murphy:  1-for-4, K
For some reason, I simply hate typing out this name.   Either put him in the majors OR convince him to be J.R. AGAIN!
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, RBI
31-for-83 in June.  His season has simply been remarkable, which doesn't make him a remarkable prospect, obviously.
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-4, 2 K
Now has 45 strikeouts in 37 games, but still has managed to hit .288.    Had a .391 BABIP entering tonight (his number in Trenton this year was .429 - this isn't a speedster we are talking about in any sense of the word)
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-3, 2 RBI, K
Played CF again.  I would think the reasoning is because they don't feel they have other viable CF options.  Still, it adds to his value if he is even adequate at the position.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  0-for-4, K
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  2-for-3, RS, BB
IF Corban Joseph:  0-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB

RHP Bryan Mitchell:  4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K
AAA debut after a pedestrian season in Trenton (1-5 with a 5.44 ERA in 11 starts).  This could be a temporary assignment, for all we know.
LHP Francisco Rondon (W, 1-0):  2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
11 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 9 K
RHP Matt Daley:  1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Robert Coello:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
1.95 ERA; 27.2 IP, 20 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 36 K
-----------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated New Hampshire, 2-1)

CF Mason Williams:  2-for-4, 2B (12), RS, CS (5)
Now 21-for-70 in June (.300).  His stolen base rate has taken a bit of a hit recently, and he is now 15-for-20.
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-4, K
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-4, RBI, RS, K, SB (8)
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  0-for-3, HBP, K
6-for-36 in his last ten games with 13 strikeouts.   He is 13-for-68 in June with 21 strikeouts.  I am definitely not shouting "BUST!", but this is what we mean when we say that Double-A is a very tough hurdle to get over.  The league has adjusted to him, and it is his turn to adjust back.
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  1-for-4, RBI
The Yankees continue to give him some starts at third base.   Hitting .249/.318/.350 in 197 blah at-bats.
3B Rob Segedin:  2-for-3, BB
He is stretching out his modest .228 batting average with all of his walks (36 in 55 games).

RHP Jairo Heredia:   5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
I admit that I am not entirely sure what the plan is.  One moment, he is starting - the next moment, he is in the bullpen, etc.  Regardless, he continues to throw well in Trenton, but his Scranton audition was not good.
RHP Nick Goody:  1.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
David Robertson special?  Allow some baserunners, then strike everyone else out.  This was Goody's Double-A debut following 2.35 ERA in 12 games for Tampa with a 27/5 K/BB ratio in only 15.1 innings.
LHP Fred Lewis:  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
The decent news is that the strikeouts are piling up - but he needs to find that consistency.
LHP Ty Webb (S, 5):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
4.30 ERA; 24 IP, 25 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 37 K since joining level.
------------------------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Daytona, 11-4)

1B Greg Bird:  3-for-4, 2 2B (15), 2 RS, BB, K
The 15 doubles have come in only 40 games.   12-for-34 in his last ten games with seven doubles and eight walks.
3B Dante Bichette:  2-for-5, RBI, RS
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-3, BB
2-for-10 with a pair of walks in his first three games.
CF Jake Cave:  0-for-3, RS, 2 BB
OF Yeicok Calderon:  2-for-4, 2 RBI
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-5, 2B (14)

LHP Conner Kendrick (L, 3-4):  2.2 IP,5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, HR
4.34 ERA; 37.1 IP, 46 H, 21 R, 18 ER,1 HR, 12 BB, 26 K
Not many pitchers can get away with four walks in 2.2 innings, but Kendrick relies so much on control and command that if he loses the plate, he truly is toast.
RHP Cesar Vargas:  2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
38 IP, 32 H, 14 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 38 K
--------------------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Kannapolis, 6-5)

SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-2, 3 BB, K, CS (7)
.266/.352/.333.  10-for-17 SB.   Now has 32 walks in 64 games.
OF Dustin Fowler:  1-for-4, RS, 2 K
.275/.331/.486 in 109 AB.   Can't help but be impressed by that.
OF Michael O'Neill:  1-for-5, 2B (12), RS, K
.247/.330/.413 in 247 AB
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 K, CS (7)
.189/.285/.306 in 196 AB.  13-for-20 SB.
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-4, RS, 3 K
1B Mike Ford:  0-for-3, BB, K
.300/.396/.475 in 200 AB.  First game since 6/6 due to injury
C Eduardo de Oleo:  1-for-3, RBI, BB, K
OF Mikeson Oliberto:  2-for-4, 2B (6), 2 RBI, RS, K

LHP Ian Clarkin:  5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
3.47 ERA; 46.2 IP, 47 H, 21 R, 18 ER, 4 HR, 11 BB, 50 K
He has been very, very impressive.
LHP Evan Rutckyj:  1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Now this is the Evan we grew to "love" in Tampa, where he walked 15 in 12.1 IP.  These are his first three walks in 9.2 at this level.
RHP Philip Walby (L, 2-2):  2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
3.86 ERA; 25.2 IP, 14 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 0 HR, 18 BB, 40 K
RHP Giovanny Gallegos:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
-------------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Defeated Hudson Valley, 10-6 - it is about time their bats showed up)

1B Brady Steiger:  3-for-4, 2B (1), HR (1), 4 RBI, 3 RS
Don't get too excited - he is 23 years old signed as a non-drafted FA last year.
CF Devyn Bolasky:  2-for-4, RBI, 3 RS, BB, K, 2 SB (2)
This is pretty much the type of player he needs to be, because power will never be a big part of his game.
OF Chris Breen:  2-for-3, 2 2B (3), 2 RS, BB, K
10-for-25 on the young season.
2B Ty McFarland:  2-for-4, 2B (3), 3 RBI
8-for-25.
SS Thairo Estrada:  1-for-4, CS (1)
4-for-28
1B Bo Thompson:  0-for-3, BB, K
1-for-14 with three walks.

RHP Jordan Cote:  3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
Pitched to a 5.32 ERA in 10 games for Charleston this season with a 18/9 K/BB ratio over 22 innings.
RHP Conor Mullee (W, 1-1):  1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
There was a time when Mullee's fastball was considered plus-plus-plus.  Perhaps it still is, but he is now 26 years old with injuries on his resume.
LHP Rony Bautista:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
On nights when he has some command, he can be devastating.  He just needs those nights to be more frequent.
