Yankees Minor League Report 6/20/14: Gary Sanchez Homers; Luis Severino Makes Tampa Debut; Dustin Fowler Continues to Hit

The GCL squads started their seasons today.  As I have stated many times, I do not post a full report on the GCL nightly.  I will report on interesting players, etc. from time to time.

Jose Mateo, a 18-year old shortstop prospect, went 2-for-6 in his first ever game in the states.  Last year, in the DSL, he hit .287/.378/.450.    Mateo will be a fun prospect to watch, and should be closing in on "Top X Prospects in the Yankees System" lists by next season, if all goes according to plan.    He has power and rates a 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale for his speed......Luis Torrens, who just turned 18 years old, went 0-for-2 today.  The catcher actually started the season in Charleston at the age of 17 this year, going 4-for-26 with a home run.....21-year old RHP Simon De la Rosa worked 2.1 innings, giving up a run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.   He pitched to a 3.77 ERA and 60/33 K/BB ratio over 45.1 innings in the DSL last season...Domingo Acevedo, a 20-year old RHP, threw four innings today, giving up two runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.   Acevedo is yet another big boy in this organization, at 6'7" and weighing 245 pounds.   He supposedly was hitting 96 on the gun as early as 17 years old, and sits consistently in the 92-94 range.  The offspeed stuff needs to be developed.

Scranton (Lost to Pawtucket, 3-2)

C John Ryan Murphy:  2-for-4, 2B (4), K
Supposedly, scouts from the Phillies were impressed and Kyle Kendrick will make his Yankees debut next week.
2B Robert Refsnyder: 1-for-3, 2B (2), RBI, BB, SB (2)
5th walk in last three games, making up for the fact that he didn't walk at his normal rate in Trenton (he was only getting 2+ hits every night).
UTIL Jose Pirela:  1-for-4, HR (5), RBI, RS, K
He has a little bit of what you may call "surprise" pop in his bat.  He did hit ten home runs to go along with his 27 doubles and five triples last season.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  0-for-4, K
OF Taylor Dugas:  0-for-2, BB, K, SB (1)
Triple-A debut.  Actually played center field tonight.   He has enough speed to mix in some steals from time to time.
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-4, K
IF Scott Sizemore:  0-for-4, K
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  1-for-3, 2B (18), RS, BB, K

RHP Joel De La Cruz:  3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Pitched to a batter in the 4th, then left the game.  Not sure why.
3.80 ERA; 47.1 IP, 53 H, 30 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 13 BB, 26 K
RHP Preston Claiborne:  2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
3.00 ERA; 15 IP, 15 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 17 K
RHP Heath Bell:  1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Send all checks to Heath Bell's Run Charity, Scranton, PA
RHP Robert Coello: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Cleaned up Bell's mess.
--------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated New Hampshire, 8-5)

C Gary Sanchez:  2-for-5, HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 RS
CF Mason Williams:  2-for-4, RS, CS (4)
19-for-65 in June
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-5, 3B (3), 2 RBI
C/1B Pete O'Brien:  1-for-4, 2B (5), 2 K
Hitting .225 (151 AB) since promotion with 18 XBH.
3B/RF Tyler Austin:  0-for-3, RS, BB, K
3B Rob Segedin: 0-for-3, 2 BB, K
Now has 35 walks in 54 games.
UTIL Zach Wilson:  2-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS
First game at this level since 4/12 (was demoted to Tampa)
SS Ali Castillo:  1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB

LHP Eric Wooten:  6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
4.40 ERA since joining level; 28.2 IP, 28 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 9 BB, 16 K
RHP Taylor Garrison (W, 3-1):  2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.79 ERA; 29 IP, 20 H, 11 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 17 K
LHP James Pazos (S, 2):  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.86 ERA; 7 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 11 K since promotion
The minute Lindgren steps on a hill, he becomes the team's best left-handed relief prospect.  But Pazos is a pretty good one in his own right.
------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Lakeland, 7-1)

1B Greg Bird:  1-for-2, 2 BB
Seems to be getting back to the Greg Bird we saw last year.
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-3, BB, 2 K
CF Jake Cave:  2-for-5, RBI, K
Just under the magical .300 mark (.299).
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-3, BB
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-5, 3 K
7-for-36 in last ten games with ten strikeouts.
OF Yeicok Calderon:  0-for-4, 4 K
And this is what is wrong with Calderon - he has power potential, but he strikes out a ton. (125 in 413 AB last year)

RHP Luis Severino (L, 0-1):  4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Decent debut (I know, I know - it is a 5.79 ERA).  20-year old had a 2.79 ERA in 14 starts for Charleston with a 70/15 K/BB ratio over 67.2 IP.
LHP Ramon Benjamin:  1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
25 IP, 17 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 BB, 35 K between Charleston/Tampa
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charleston (Lost to Kannapolis, 6-1)

OF Dustin Fowler:  2-for-4, 2B (8), RS, SB (2)
16-for-40 in his last ten games with ten of those hits going for extra bases.  As an added bonus, he is playing a lot of center field.
OF Michael O'Neill:  2-for-3, 2B (11), HBP
13-for-40 in last ten games with five walks and six strikeouts.
SS Tyler Wade:  0-for-2, 2 BB, K
10-for-37 in last ten games with ten walks.  Drawing walks, hitting for a decent average (.268), and stealing some bases (10), though not at a good rate (16 attempts).  Overall, solid year.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-4, 2 K
78 strikeouts in 59 games.
3B Miguel Andujar:  0-for-4
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-4, 2B (6)
OF Brandon Thomas:  0-for-4, RBI, K
He drove in a run (13th in 43 games), so that is something at least.

RHP Angel Rincon (L, 1-1):  2.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
5.14 ERA; 21 IP, 19 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 16 K
RHP Eric Ruth: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
54.2 IP, 50 H, 28 R, 25 ER, 1 HR, 21 BB, 53 K between four levels.
RHP Cole Coshow:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Hudson Valley, 3-0)

SS Thairo Estrada:  1-for-3, K
OF Austin Aune:  1-for-4, K

1B Chris Breen:  1-for-4, 2 K
2B Ty McFarland:  0-for-4, K

Catch a theme?  These bozos struck out 13 times tonight.
1B Bubba Jones:  0-for-3, 3 K

RHP Sam Agnew-Wieland (L, 0-1):  4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Hasn't sabermetrics determined that hyphenated names never make it in the big leagues?
LHP Ethan Carnes:  3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 1 BB, 5 K
