Yankees Minor League Report 6/8/14: Robert Refsnyder's Torrid Stretch Continues; Latest from Manny Banuelos

First baseman Mike Ford, who hit four home runs for Charleston in a recent game, has been placed on the disabled list by Charleston.  Reymond Nunez is taking his place.   Not much to say on Nunez - there was a time when he had intriguing right-handed power, hitting 10 HR in only 59 games for the DSL squad in 2009.    But that was pretty much it until he hit 15 in 100 games for Charleston last season.  He struggled mightily in Tamp

Scranton
(Lost to Toledo, 5-4.  Kevin Whelan, acquired in the Gary Sheffield trade many years ago, is Toledo's closer.  The Yankees got Wheeler, alongside Anthony Claggett and Humberto Sanchez (who was a legitimate prospect) in that deal.  None panned out - although all three did have brief stays in the majors)

UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  3-for-3, 2B (16), HR (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB
.310/.358/.506 in 174 AB.   Wheeler is 27 and has never spent a day in the majors, despite a decent minor league career and flexibility in the field.
UTIL Jose Pirela: 1-for-5, CS (3)
Played first base today, as he continues to move around the field again.  .330/.367/.464 in 224 AB.  His 1-for-9 in his last two games has reduced his line in the last ten games to .457/.490/.674.
OF Zoilo Almonte:  1-for-4, RS
.284/.327/.490 in 155 AB
C Francisco Cervelli: 1-for-3
Rehab continues - did leave game early, though I don't know if that was planned or some sort of injury.   Murphy has looked so good and comfortable in the big leagues that I really not looking forward to Cervelli returning.
1B Kyle Roller:  1-for-4, 2 K
.306/.400/.551 in 98 AB since promotion; 35 strikeouts in those 98 AB, however.  If he actually still is 6'1", 250 - that is one big dude.
SS Carmen Angelini:  3-for-4, 2B (7), RBI
OF Adonis Garcia:  0-for-4, RS
.305/.343/.455 in 213 AB.  The fact that he can cover center field is interesting, but that is one area the Yankees really don't need covered.

RHP Zach Nuding (L, 2-4):  4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, HR
6.25 ERA; 40.1 IP, 55 H, 31 R, 28 ER, 6 HR, 10 BB, 24 K
RHP Jairo Heredia: 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
Has allowed eight runs on 13 hits with eight walks and seven strikeouts since promotion.
Switch Pat Venditte:  3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Nice rebound after getting destroyed his last time out.  Still, I don't see any real reason to bring him up unless you want to replace Wade LeBlanc's uselessness with him.
------------------------------
Trenton (Lost to Altoona, 9-7)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-4, BB
.342/.385/.548.  Seven straight multi-hit games.   He has multi-hit games in 13 of his last 14 contests, and 15 of his last 18 games.    In his last 30 games, he is 51-for-117 with 13 doubles, four triples, and three home runs.    This is all obviously not sustainable - his BABIP is through the roof during this time period (which makes sense - hard to go 51-for-117 without a high BABIP!) and this is not slow pitch softball.  It is just a lot of fun to watch.
3B Rob Segedin: 3-for-6, 2B (5), K
.239/.369/.365 with 28 walks and 27 strikeouts in 45 games.  The OBP is obviously very nice  but the power just hasn't shown up.
CF Mason Williams:  0-for-1, HBP
Left game early, probably due to the HBP.
OF Ben Gamel:  2-for-6, 2 RBI
.290/.331/.374 in 262 AB.  Moved to center when Williams left the game.   So far, his minor league career suggests a #4 OF with doubles power, decent speed, and the ability to cover center field.
OF Taylor Dugas:  2-for-3, 2B (9), 3 RBI, RS, K
.301/.415/.438 in 146 AB.   Came into the game when Williams left, which tells you what you need to know about one thing:  They don't believe he can cover center field, which does reduce his overall value, as he is a tiny kid with OBP ability but no power upside.
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
.252/.331/.365 in 159 AB.  .781 OPS in last ten games.  The uptick in his offense lately isn't much - you just hope it is a start.
C/1B/RF Pete O'Brien:  0-for-5
First start at first base, which he will be calling home more often now.  7-for-37 in last ten games.   Still has a .624 SLG in 226 AB between Tampa/Trenton this season.
UTIL Dan Fiorito:  2-for-5, 2B (10), 2 RS, K
.255/.302/.348 in 161 AB.  Non-drafted FA is an easy kid to root for, but isn't likely a major leaguer.  He has done a decent job hitting LHP in his very brief career, however.

LHP Manny Banuelos:  3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR
Threw three innings today, which he hasn't done since 5/9, so that's good to see.   Again, for now, it is all about building back his strength and stamina than it is the results.
LHP Eric Wooten (L, 2-1):  3.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
First rough outing since joining Trenton (Third appearance, all as a long reliever backing up Banuelos).    Has a 3.39 ERA overall with 45/17 K/BB ratio over 69 innings.
LHP Cesar Cabral:  0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Phil Wetherell: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Nice comeback after getting beat up a bit in Double-A debut.    The 24-year old is not a special relief prospect, but isn't completely off the radar either.  In this organization, it will be tough for him to make an impact though.
--------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Brevard County, 5-2)

1B Greg Bird:  1-for-4, K
.252/.341/.405 in 111 AB.  16 walks and 30 strikeouts.
3B Dante Bichette:  1-for-4, RS
.277/.367/.441 in 213 AB.   He is not hitting quite as much as he was, but is still hanging in there with a stat line nobody would have expected to see at this point in the season.
SS Cito Culver:  0-for-2, 2 BB
.237/.300/.316 in 228 AB.   Followed up a horrendous April (.215/.265/.269) with a better (though far from "good") May (.257/.319/.339).    His OPS in June thus far is .728 in eight games.
1B Matt Snyder:  1-for-4, 2B (5), RS

LHP Conner Kendrick (L, 2-3):  4 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
3.64 ERA; 29.2 IP, 38 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 20 K
RHP Nick Rumbelow:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
2.77 ERA in 15 innings since being promoted here with 16 strikeouts and four walks.   He is about to turn 23.  Rumbelow is an aggressive reliever with a good enough fastball (93-95), and a few different types of curveballs.   Supposedly also working on a change to keep left-handed hitters honest.    If he stays healthy, I would expect him to enter the bullpen conversation as early as the middle of the 2015 season.
-------------------------------------------
Charleston (Beaten by Savannah, 11-6)

OF Michael O'Neill:  2-for-5, 3B (4), RBI, RS, K
The 21-year old has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, so there's that if nothing else.
SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-5, 2B (9), RBI, RS
Hitting .262 in a full-season league at the age of 19 while playing a premium position is pretty good and encouraging at the very least.
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-2, RS, 3 BB
Hitting .315 with 37 walks in 60 games.  The strikeouts are borderline (54), but he has shown off good plate discipline and strong power.  Again, I would be absolutely shocked if he is not in Tampa after the Sally League All-Star Game, if not sooner.
CF Brandon Thomas:  1-for-4, 2B (4), RS, 2 K
From "sleeper pick" to disaster.  The 23-year old switch-hitting center fielder out of Georgia Tech was considered a fine prospect after the 2012 season (selected by Pittsburgh in 4th round), but got sick his senior year and played poorly.  Getting him in the 8th round seemed like a good value pick, but he has just been a train wreck.  40 strikeouts in 37 games, and hitting .149.   Yes, a 20-for-100 stretch would be a "tear" for him.
UTIL John Murphy:  0-for-2, RS, 3 BB, K
C Kale Sumner:  2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-4, K
1B Reymond Nunez:  0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
For some reason, he batted cleanup tonight.  The only thing he should be cleaning up is the locker room.

RHP Rookie Davis:  4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
5.57 ERA; 51.2 IP, 57 H, 36 R, 32 ER, 3 HR, 22 BB, 41 K
Last four starts have been quite the struggle:  16.1 IP, 19 H, 14 R, 14 ER, 5 BB, 11 K
LHP Chaz Hebert:  3 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Pitched to a 4.05 ERA in three starts for Tampa before "demotion" (Demotion in definition only - I don't think they really intended him to stay at Tampa. The 21-year old had only one career start above the GCL before this season - and that was in Staten Island last year).   Anyway, rough first appearance here.
RHP Philip Walby:  1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.80 ERA; 21.1 IP, 9 H, 11 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 16 BB, 35 K
A bit of a departure for Walby, who typically gives up walks but not hits.
