Yankees Minor League Report 6/5/14: Running Out of Adjectives to Describe Robert Refsnyder; Latest from Ian Clarkin

Hey, if you want offense, fly to the Dominican!  The DSL-2 team won a 16-15 game today.  The DSL-1 team put 11 runs on the board in an 11-8 victory.      Go read the boxscores at your own risk - and play a game with yourself by predicting which players will become superstars someday.

Scranton (Lost to Norfolk, 13-9.  They have been playing arcade baseball lately - loads of runs and hits going up on the scoreboard.)

OF Zoilo Almonte:  3-for-5, HR (7), 3 RBI, 2 RS, K
I don't always know what to make of Almonte, but I would like to see him get some consistent major league playing time.
2B Jose Pirela:  3-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
He actually started in LF tonight, which is very interesting.  I am very close to jumping on the "Why not give him a shot?" bandwagon.  22-for-51 in last ten games (which shows you how much Scranton is scoring - averaging more than five AB per game) and is now 14-for-25 in the month of June after hitting .346/.400/.462 in May.
UTIL Zelous Wheeler:  3-for-5, 2B (15), 2 RS
C Francisco Arcia:  2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
He has done a solid job as a backup here (23-for-84).  Not much of a prospect nowadays, but is good organizational depth.
UTIL Russ Canzler:  2-for-5, 2B (11), RBI, RS, 3 K
I am not high on Canzler, but he has been hitting (16-for-40 surge)
IF Corban Joseph:  1-for-4, RBI, RS
1B Kyle Roller:  0-for-4, BB, 3 K
He is hitting .287 here but with 31 K in 87 AB.
OF Antoan Richardson: 1-for-4, 2 RBI, K

RHP Shane Greene:  3 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
OK, this is what you call a "You aren't coming back up to the majors soon, kid" kind of performance.  ERA is now at 6.57, and we are beyond the point where we can blame it all on his early-season shuffling between the majors and Scranton.
LHP Francisco Rondon: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
The 26-year old is someone to watch as a potential major league candidate - good fastball/slider combination, but doesn't always seem to know where the heck the pitches are going.
RHP Preston Claiborne:  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
His velocity has dropped considerably this year, which is a bit of a mystery.  Still not a bad option as a multi-inning reliever in the majors, but at one point last year, it looked like he could develop into more than that.
Switch Pat Venditte:  1.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
There's always clown school.
RHP Russ Canzler:  0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Not only can he play the corner positions, he can get you through games like this better than Wade LeBlanc!  What can't he do?

Trenton
(Lost to Richmond, 8-5)

2B Robert Refsnyder:  2-for-5, 2 2B (18), RBI, RS, 3 K
We will forgive the strikeouts.  The power he is showing this season is a bit surprising.    He had 41 XBH in 467 AB last season; 29 in 217 AB this season.   Eventually he has to cool down, no?  He is now 20 for his last 42.
C/RF Pete O'Brien: 2-for-4, RBI, K
Not often you get a basic two single, run batted in type of night from O'Brien.
1B/3B/OF Tyler Austin:  2-for-5, 2B (6), RBI, K
C Gary Sanchez:  0-for-3, BB, K
He has pretty much settled into the .250s range at the moment - last year for Tampa, he hit .254/.313/.420 before getting promoted to Trenton halfway through the season.  This year, going into tonight, he is at .259/.330/.434.
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-5, 2B (10), 2 K
6-for-19 thus far in June.  Again, any signs of life are needed after an awful stretch during May.
OF Taylor Dugas:  1-for-3, BB
UTIL Ali Castillo: 1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS

LHP Jeremy Bleich (L, 4-5):  4.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
3.51 ERA; 66.2 IP, 62 H, 36 R, 26 ER, 8 HR, 22 BB, 55 K
Bleich is obviously not very good - especially after having a shoulder injury.  But if they want a long-man LHP for the big leagues, they are probably better off using a guy like this than an absolute disaster than LeBlanc.
LHP Aaron Dott:  1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
-----------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Charlotte, 5-0)

3B Dante Bichette:  2-for-4
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-4, 2B (11), K
11-for-39 with five doubles in last ten games.
CF Jake Cave:  1-for-4, 2 K
He is still hitting well overall (though he is in a 9-for-41 slide), but the strikeouts are starting to pile up (12 of those 41 AB have resulted in strikeouts)
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-4, 2 K
6-for-38 slide with 13 strikeouts and only two walks.
C Francisco Cervelli:  0-for-3
Rehab clock has started
OF Zach Wilson:  2-for-4

LHP Miguel Sulbaran:  5 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
4.28 ERA; 34.2 IP, 40 H, 19 R, 16 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 25 K
Would love to see more of this from the 20-year old.
RHP Brett Gerritse (L, 2-3):  1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
-------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Savannah, 5-1)

3B Miguel Andjuar:  2-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, 2 RS
Has hit safely in five of his last six games (7-for-21)
SS Tyler Wade: 0-for-4, K
1B Mike Ford:  1-for-4, 2B (10), RBI, K
Hasn't homered since historic 4 HR night.
OF Dustin Fowler:  0-for-2, RS, BB, K
12-for-62
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-2, HBP, SB (12), CS (3)
CF Brandon Thomas: 0-for-2, BB, K, CS (2)
It is almost impossible to hit as bad as he has:  .148 in 115 AB with 38 strikeouts.
2B Gosuke Katoh:  0-for-3, 2 K

LHP Ian Clarkin (W, 2-3):  5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
3.86 ERA; 32.2 IP, 34 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 4 HR, 8 BB, 32 K
This is a fine start for Clarkin.  Couldn't really expect much more.
RHP Angel Rincon:  3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
RHP Philip Walby (S, 2):  0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
4.05 ERA; 20 IP, 7 H, 11 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 16 BB, 33 K
Generates grounders, strikes people out, and walks the ballpark.
