Yankees Minor League Report 6/26/14: Ian Clarkin Pitches Masterpiece while Miguel Andujar Drives Home Six in Charleston Win

In the GCL today, RHP Jose Mesa finally made his professional debut.  Drafted in the 24th round in 2012 (and yes, he is the son of former big league closer Jose Mesa), Mesa has suffered through some arm injuries (to say the least, given that he has been a ghost for so long).  Anyway, he is still only 20 years old.  He threw a scoreless inning today.

LHP Nik Turley:  4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
Cruising through four innings; seems to have run into a wall in the fifth.  75 total pitches, 43 for strikes.   First Triple-A start of the season.  Made one rehab start in the GCL before being placed here.  Out most of the season with undisclosed arm injury.
--------------------------------------
Trenton (Defeated Erie, 10-5)

C Gary Sanchez:  2-for-3, 2B (15), 2 RS, 2 BB, K
20-for-63 in June.  He is coming on very strongly now.
C/1B Pete O'Brien: 2-for-5, 2B (7), RBI, RS, K
42nd XBH of the season in 287 AB.
3B Rob Segedin: 3-for-4, RBI, RS, SB (1)
Nice to add some hits to his strong walk rate.  He has shown off a tad of speed in the past, but it is not a big part of his game.
OF Ben Gamel:  1-for-5, 2B (21), 2 RBI, RS
Keep piling up those doubles!
CF Mason Williams:  1-for-2, SB (16)
Left game early.
UTIL Zach Wilson:  1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Showed promise in Staten Island all the way back in 2011, but hasn't done much since.

RHP Jairo Heredia:  4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
3.19 ERA; 42.1 IP, 42 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 46 K
LHP Fred Lewis:  1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
So much for lowering his ERA recently
LHP James Pazos:  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
10.2 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 14 K since promotion.
----------------------------------------
Tampa (Lost to Clearwater, 4-3)

CF Jake Cave:  3-for-4, 2 2B (15), RBI, 2 RS
Eight hits in last two games has raised his average to .313.
3B Dante Bichette:  2-for-4, 2 RBI, K, CS (3)
44 RBI in 75 games, which is a pretty good rate.   He has surprisingly remained solid all season.  Remember, he is only 21 years old, and is younger than teammate Aaron Judge.
OF Aaron Judge:  0-for-4, K
6-for-28 since promotion
1B Greg Bird:  0-for-4, 2 K
Still 15-for-37 in his last ten games.
SS Cito Culver:  1-for-3, K
2B Angelo Gumbs:  1-for-4, 2 K
You again?   He needs to show he can stay on the freakin field before any kind of real judgement can be made about his future.
OF Yeicok Calderon:  0-for-3

LHP Conner Kendrick:  4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
4.50 ERA; 42 IP, 52 H, 24 R, 21 ER, 1 HR, 14 BB, 32 K
------------------------------------------
Charleston (Defeated Savannah, 9-0)

3B Miguel Andujar:  2-for-3, HR (6 - Grand Slam), 6 RBI, BB
Three multi-hit games in last four contests as he attempts to show everyone what the fuss was all about.
SS Tyler Wade:  1-for-5, RS, SB (12)
The small silver lining in the Avelino injury is that it has given Wade considerable time at shortstop in order to develop his own game (Don't get me wrong - Avelino is the bigger prospect, and needs to be on the field ASAP)
2B Gosuke Katoh:  1-for-3, RBI, BB
Trying hard to stay above .200 (.203)
OF Michael O'Neill:  2-for-5, RS, 2 K
11-for-37 in last ten games with six strikeouts.
1B Mike Ford:  2-for-4, RS, BB
C Eduardo de Oleo:  2-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, RS
.262/.309/.500 in 126 AB for the 21-year old.
1B Reymond Nunez:  0-for-3, 3 RS, BB, HBP, K
UTIL John Murphy:  1-for-4, RBI

LHP Ian Clarkin (W, 3-3):  6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 7 K
3.08 ERA; 52.2 IP, 48 H, 21 R, 18 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 57 K
Five June Starts:   25 IP, 19 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 28 K
Savannah is 48-26 this season (it is no accident, as they are a more experienced team - on average, about a year older than Charleston's squad).    At 19, Clarkin is even younger than the ---average age - the bottom line is that Clarkin is on fire.
RHP Eric Ruth (S, 1):  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
58.1 IP, 51 H, 28 R, 25 ER, 1 HR, 21 BB, 56 K
--------------------------------
Staten Island (Lost to Hudson Valley, 14-3)

SS Thairo Estrada:  1-for-4, RS
10-for-43 without an XBH.
1B/OF Chris Breen:  2-for-4, K
Drafted as a catcher in 2012, he actually spent his first season (25 games) as a catcher in the GCL.  He was converted to a 1B/LF last season.
OF Austin Aune:  1-for-2, RS, K
.217 (10-for-46) on the season.
2B Ty McFarland:  0-for-2
CF Devyn Bolasky:  0-for-2
3B Renzo Martini:  1-for-3, 2B (1), 2 RBI, RS
Nearly doubled his average to .063!
1B Bo Thompson:  1-for-4
1B Connor Spencer:  0-for-2, K
8th round pick this year only hit one home run in his career at UC Irvine, but has a reputation for being a strong line drive hitter.  I guess he could still develop a little more power as a professional - he better, because even if the power game in MLB is not what it was back in the steroid era, it will be tough to get by as a first baseman without much of a power game.

RHP Matt Borens:  1.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
11th round pick out of Eastern Illinois is another tall Yankees draftee at 6'7" (What, do the Yankees take their draft spreadsheet and sort the pitchers by height?), though his listed weight is a rail-thin 195.   Given that, you would think (hope) there is upside potential for his arm strength to increase.   For now, he is a tall guy who relies on movement and his offspeed stuff to generate outs, which obviously didn't happen often enough tonight.
RHP Jordan Cote:  3.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
The 6'5" 21-year old with a history of injuries can't afford many outings like this.  The Yankees need to see some progress here.  He showed off his talents in 2012 and 2013 when he had a chance to pitch, allowing six earned runs in 55.2 IP in the GCL with a 45/9 K/BB ratio.  But if you can't stay healthy and develop, you aren't going to last long.
RHP Matt Wotherspoon:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
First career strikeout in 4.1 innings.
LHP Ethan Carnes:  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
0.93 ERA; 9.2 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
